Where do people dry their hair?!

Starryskiesinthesky · 03/02/2022 00:05

I sit on the floor but have always aspired to having a dressing table! I am mid 50's and was just thinking, when you are 70 do you still sit on the floor drying your hair?!

OP posts:

the hall!

PivotPivotPivottt · 04/02/2022 20:17

I sit on the couch and usually put one of the soaps on and read the subtitles.

Say at my dressing table, had it about 20 years.

Used to do it sat on the floor of our bedroom in front of a mirror on the wardrobe. Covid and WFH forced me buy a desk for the guest room. Guest room isn't big but I've managed to squeeze an ikea malm dressing table in there (it's very shallow). Now I can't imagine how i lived without it.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 04/02/2022 20:52

ErrolTheDragon it doesn't have an external door though (that would make sense) it's in the basement!

Actually dc1 now lives in what used to be the hobby/ playroom/kids tv and gaming room next to the laundry room and has claimed that shower, but for the first 14 years we lived here nobody used that shower! It's weird having a room with a shower and big laundry sink, plumbing for washer and dryer but no toilet!

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 04/02/2022 20:54

RonCarlos everyone needs a timehall

RedRobyn2021 · 04/02/2022 20:54

I have a really nice dressing table but since having a baby I usually dry my hair in the lounge

You should get yourself a dressing table! It's so nice to have all your bits and pieces on there, nice cup of tea in the mornings. So much nicer than sitting on the floor

hamsterchump · 04/02/2022 20:59

I have a dressing table with a mirror but I prefer sitting on the floor in front of the big free standing mirror. I don't really know why, I think the mirror doesn't seem big enough on the dressing table or something and the light is better in the other mirror but I should probably move the room around again.

DontKeepTheFaith · 04/02/2022 21:03

Stood at the end of my bed in front of the house mirror or in our back room if dh is asleep. It’s a quick hairdryer blast, no style or skill involved🤣🤣

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 04/02/2022 21:05

Last time I used a hairdryer was 1996.

fitflopqueen · 04/02/2022 21:05

Standing in front of full length mirror (located inside wardrobe door & hook for hairdryer, have to plug in each time though) in our bedroom, I have long hair so prefer to stand.
Make up done either in bedroom or bathroom depending on the lighting ie day/night/time of year.

CheesePlantMurderer · 04/02/2022 21:07

I have a chest of drawers with a triple mirror on top and stand there and use it as my dressing table. Top drawer is full of my shit beauty products

KatharinaRosalie · 04/02/2022 21:11

but I’m guessing that’s because the voltage isn’t as high/powerful?

Nope, same voltage in Sweden/Germany/France etc. It's just a weird UK thing, not to have sockets in bathrooms. Rest of Europe manages and we are not fried.

Alliswells · 04/02/2022 21:51

I treated me myself recently to a dressing table, mirror and stool. Not very expensive but I absolutely love love sitting here to dry my hair. Before that it was sitting on the floor which I don't find comfortable !

banivani · 05/02/2022 09:16

@Mollysocks no same as in UK I think, it’s just building standards are different. It’s normal in Sweden to have washing machines in bathrooms and they obv need electricity. It’s not at all impossible, just a question of wiring and waterproofing. You have lamps in there after all. In this respect I think the UK and Ireland just have an idea of it not working. All Nordic/Scandinavian countries are, by the way, united in the idea that UK houses are very poorly built 😉 often based on holidays in 1982 to a B&B with a carpeted bathroom.

@Maireas 😂

borntobequiet · 05/02/2022 09:21

I’m nearly 70. Mostly I air/finger dry my hair, but if I use a hairdryer it’s standing up in the bedroom and with my head hanging down and the air blown upwards for volume. I run a comb through it looking in the mirror in the hallway on my way out.
I’m lucky because a decent cut means I don’t have to use any product or do much at all for it to look OK.

middleager · 05/02/2022 09:28

Nearly 50 and spent most of my life drying it on the bed.
However, last year, I made use of my ensuite, which has a walkway area, which I turned into a dressing room area with dressing table. Finally, I dry my hair there.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 05/02/2022 10:44

Washing machines in kitchens are much odder than drying your hair somewhere other than the bathroom, if you stop to think about it.

I grew up in the UK but with a utility room and didn't like having a washing machine in the kitchen at all in my first homes in the UK - I very much appreciate having a laundry room now. I lived in a part of Japan with a hot/semi tropical climate for a while and washing machines were on balconies there, almost universally, though occasionally in bathrooms - much smaller average home size than the UK but never a washing machine in the kitchen.

@banivani

Who has lamps in the bathroom??? Shock

RosesAndHellebores · 05/02/2022 11:06

Surely hair drying in bathrooms only works if there are multiple bathrooms.

Most families in the UK live in 3 bedroom houses. Often with one bathroom. How could it be feasible in a family with a mother and teenage dd. Let alone if there were more than one dd.

Certainly arguments for electrical/charging points for razors, toothbrushes, etc.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/02/2022 11:14

Hairdryers in hotels in the US often seem to be wired into the bathroom wall - really annoying if you like drying your hair somewhere comfortable, or while your OH is in the bath.

banivani · 05/02/2022 12:12

@GiantKitten well a ceiling lamp then. A light. Whatchamacallit.

liveforsummer · 05/02/2022 12:31

I stand, for some reason I find it awkward sitting at a desk etc

dreamingbohemian · 05/02/2022 12:38

@BootsScootsAndToots

How do British people feel about electricity in the kitchen. All those plugs, sink, and electrical appliances 🙄

Honestly, as an adult I'm sure you can avoid chucking your hairdryer into the bath/sink!

This!

I can't believe people are so terrified of their hair dryers

Spinnier · 05/02/2022 12:52

Kitchens have surfaces though. I don't balance my kitchen appliances on the edge of my sink. In the bathroom I grew up with the only horizontal surfaces were the edge of the sink, the edge of the bath and the back of the loo.

Granted there are many and various other solutions to this, and things have moved on.

Granted there are other ways to solve the problem, and built in storage and surfaces are more common in bathrooms now.
