DD 22 has never heard of Prince Edward

As the title says pretty much, showed her a picture of him and she said she has never heard of him in her life. I think it shows the generational difference as most people my age would know who he is I think.

OP posts:
Hen2018 · 31/01/2022 01:41

Lord Mountbatten and also one of George Vs brother, whose name escapes me now.

Hen2018 · 31/01/2022 01:43

Another George. Duke of Kent, I think. An early and mysterious death...

Maireas · 31/01/2022 01:49

Did they come out, @Hen2018?
Anyway. No current senior royal has come out (to my knowledge), I'm responding to the poster who said Andrew is gay.

Diana is dead. You know that, right?
Yes I remember this well.

One morning, my mother came into my room and woke me up. She had a very solemn look on her face.

“Buwch, I’ve got something to tell you....Princess Diana has died”

It took me a couple of second to process, before I replied “Why would I care?” and went back to sleep.

To me, the Windsors are roughly as interesting as the Kardashians.

Tosement · 31/01/2022 01:58

I can understand the not caring. It’s the not knowing that’s very strange.

The make-up of the living royal family was not covered in school.

Absent an interest in them, the make-up of their family tree was not a topic I was ever going to actively research, so that leaves passive learning through media exposure (or it somehow popping up in conversation).

If I was ever watching or reading the news, and a Royal-related story comes on, I usually tune out or skip it. I knew the Queen, Charles, Diana, Camilla, William and Harry, but the others were just a sea of names I’d hear in passing from time to time.

Buwch · 31/01/2022 02:18

At least I’m not in the 4% of Brits who apparently haven’t heard of the Queen...

I read about him on here the other day and was very shocked as I had never heard of him, and had no idea thete was a Prince Edward. I still have never seen him as I wasn't interested enough to look for a picture!

Battygirll · 31/01/2022 03:23

I knew him quite well in the 80s and 90s. We met through acting. He was very nice but very guarded. Quite shy.

He seems to keep a low profile these days.

Nailsbythesea · 31/01/2022 04:19

@Emmelina

He’s a quiet one. Does his duties. Doesn’t draw attention to himself.
Except When he was trying to exploit his Royal connections for monetary gain. Sophie was in PR and he set up a tv production firm and was trying to sell the rights to his wedding and other projects to other companies like the bbc etc didn’t he make a film called Edward on Edward - about his ancestor. All for shut down pretty quickly with no profit as they can only sell their connection as they are not high quality tv production etc so they kept quiet - when of course not being accused on beating his dogs on the front of newspapers

So do all the republicans rejoicing about the younger generations lack of enthusiasm for the royals support a President Boris? For this reason alone I hope we always keep the monarchy.

halloweenie13 · 31/01/2022 05:20

I'm 23 and didn't know that the Queen had more then 2 children until around 5 years ago (I thought she just had Charles and Anne). Since the Crown began and the legal stuff I have known about Andrew and Edward.

I am only now, upon reading this post, learning that Anne is the queen's daughter? I didn't even know she had a daughter. Although I did know there was an Anne floating around the royal family somewhere, I suppose, but had no idea if she was/is dead/alive/how old/whose relative she is etc Grin

I'm younger and love the monarchy, I think Catherine and William will rebuild a great monarchy, I actually like Camilla and from the documented history of Diana I think she had mental health issues and was taken advantage of by Charles. Andrew I think was friends with Epstein, but I absolutely think Virginia is exaggerating any interactions with him and that the photo is photoshopped. Anyone with a technical background and a brain can see that. Also I dislike Boris, the conservatives are a joke currently. Carrie knows exactly what she is doing by running the government into the ground. Also, the government has quite literally broke the law by treating the general public with contempt. If the government feels it is appropriate to uphold laws for the people, yet support their own cabinet in not following them, then they should not be our government.

My sister (56), thought Prince Phillip and the Duke of Edinburgh were brothers until the day he died. But then again, she didn’t know 9/11 had happened until 3 days later (as she never listens to the radio, reads a paper and had her TV on cartoon network 24/7).

fallfallfall · 31/01/2022 06:10

I check and see if there’s any news on the Duke of Westminster. I think his will be an interesting life to follow.

ElftonWednesday · 31/01/2022 06:14

I have found this lack of general knowledge in a lot of young people too

Your general knowledge gets better as you get older, or it should do if you take an interest in the world and believe in life long learning. Depends what it is also, I remember doing a quiz at work at that age and I got all the popular culture questions right, whereas the 40 somethings on my team hardly had a clue.

sashh · 31/01/2022 06:16

Did your think he was just some guy who kept following her around?

Official stalker to HN Queen.

Well there are some weird jobs, including breaking in the queen's shoes so this could be one I suppose.

Wfhquery · 31/01/2022 06:17

@toppkatz

My dd is 22 as well, and I'm frequently amazed by the sheer lack of general knowledge among her and her friends. I'm not suggesting that they should teach the royal family tree at school, but they don't seem to teach much at all in the way of general knowledge these days.

While I couldn't name all the grandchildren with any certainty, it is surprising that so many people don't know the names of all four of the Queen's children.

We’ve had this discussion before and came to the conclusion it’s because of on demand tv so now a days people only watch what they want to watch. Back in the 80sthe tv would have been on one of the 4 channels so you’d have seen news and other programmes that came on
AlexaShutUp · 31/01/2022 06:21

I asked my 16yo if she knew who Prince Edward was. She looked nonplussed.

She then said that if the older royals didn't feature in The Crown, then they don't exist in her mind.Grin

She did appear to have vaguely heard of Sophie though.

ElftonWednesday · 31/01/2022 06:25

My DDs (16 and 13) would know who Prince Edward is, though I'm not sure they would recognise him from a photo as he hasn't been in the news that much in their lifetimes. I would have certainly had conversations with them even when they were much younger about who the immediate members of the royal family are as we talk about current affairs.

Though I must admit having to Google the various Kents, Gloucesters and Princess Margaret's descendants from time to time as I always forget quite how they fit in!

Interesting. We talk about current affairs a lot too, but the Royal family don't feature much and I don't think Edward has come up at all.

16yo DD could comfortably name a lot of politicians from both sides of the house, as well as many world leaders, but Edward just doesn't seem very relevant. Grin

milkysmum · 31/01/2022 06:38

I'm 42. I just googled, and thought to myself " no I don't think I'd have recognised who he was either ". My kids certainly would have no idea.

FairyPrincess123 · 31/01/2022 07:00

@FuzzyPuffling

I danced with him once.
So if his Sophie has ever danced with Charles, then you've danced with a man who's danced with a girl who's danced with the Prince of Wales.

Indeed, a President Boris would be as much a disaster as a King Charles will be.
