As the title says pretty much, showed her a picture of him and she said she has never heard of him in her life. I think it shows the generational difference as most people my age would know who he is I think.

I’m not surprised a 22 year old doesn’t know that. It’s not especially important knowledge, and like some PP I think it’s a good sign if the RF are becoming increasingly irrelevant.

romatheroamer · 31/01/2022 07:10

Amazing thread... makes me feel ancient! But I agree with a pp that we certainly don't want President Boris and while the ignorance on this thread is surprising but harmless, it soon morphs into who's Keir Starmer and er... Holocaust Memorial Day the other day... what was that all about?

KatherineJaneway · 31/01/2022 07:13

I'm very surprised so many people do not know who he is.

I wouldn't want a president Boris but the thing is if most people don't like him we could vote him out. That's democracy. Having a king Charles who you've got to put up with regardless is ridiculous, antiquated and undemocratic. Ultimately I'd rather be a citizen than a subject.

PriamFarrl · 31/01/2022 07:53

I’d rather forgotten that he existed but I do know who he is.

I wonder if it’s because for those of us now in our 40s we remember the weddings being televised.

Funnily enough, I have absolutely no recollection of Edward's wedding. I remember Charles and Diana/Andrew and Fergie. I wonder if I was already living overseas at that point. Confused
londonrach · 31/01/2022 08:02

Not surprised I forgot he exist s will I saw your post.

CounsellorTroi · 31/01/2022 08:03

@Seb342

So do all the republicans rejoicing about the younger generations lack of enthusiasm for the royals support a President Boris? For this reason alone I hope we always keep the monarchy.
Monarchists always come up with this argument, in fact it’s the only one they seem to have, but a presidency does not have to be an executive presidency like the US or France. The Irish model seems to work well.

It wasn’t a national holiday AFAIR and on a smaller scale than Charles/Diana etc. More on the lines of Princess Beatrice’s wedding, a Google suggests.

hellsbells99 · 31/01/2022 08:12

DD, who is 23, met him when she received her gold Duke of Edinburgh award. He was very nice.

Octomore · 31/01/2022 08:14

Option A: President Boris - who I can vote out
Option B: King 'anyone' - who I have no choice about

But for an accident of birth, Andrew could have been our next king. In fact, we've already had a king (Edward) who sympathized with the Nazis. There's no guaranteed whatsoever that future kings won't turn out to be sex offenders, fascists or murderers - you just have to put up with whoever is in line.

Give me someone I can vote out and hold to account any day.

Porcupineintherough · 31/01/2022 08:15

Presidents come and go and they are voted for. Unlike monarchy who you are stuck with indefinitely. For all those waving President Boris at us as a warning, how would you have felt about a King Andrew?

saltandpepper234 · 31/01/2022 08:16

Couldn’t pick him out of a line up. Vaguely aware he exists. I’m 29 and the royal family are not relevant to me whatsoever

MajorCarolDanvers · 31/01/2022 08:16

I did an event with Edward and 200 kids aged 10-14. None of them had heard of him.

That's what Harry has to look forward to in 30 years.

MajorCarolDanvers · 31/01/2022 08:18

And to be fair how many people aged 40 know who the Dujes of Kent, Gloucester and Princess Alice are.

ChocolateDeficitDisorder · 31/01/2022 08:29

To me, the Windsors are roughly as interesting as the Kardashians.

Snap. I'm in my 50s in Scotland and I know who the Queen's children are but it was never a topic of interest when it came to educating my own children. They well-educated graduates who couldn't name them.

Why would they? It's incredibly weird to dissect and inspect the lives of other people's families. I'm very glad those days are ending.

Maireas · 31/01/2022 08:36

Princess Alice has been dead for about 20 years, and was only marginal in public life before then, so I'm not surprised people aren't familiar with her really.
BigFatLiar · 31/01/2022 08:43

None of it surprises me these days. Watch Quiz shows and be amazed at the number of people who don't know about WW2 or WW1. Don't have to be a holocaust denier these days lots don't even seem to know what it was.
Lots of younger people can tell you who the latest SM influencers are or rappers etc but have no idea about our history.

x2boys · 31/01/2022 08:48

We get our news via different platforms theses days I'm 48 I remember the 80,s and all news papers being full of Diana and Fergie and various other more minor royals ,we only had four TV channels nowadays I think people are less likely to read papers or regularly watch BBC / Itv news .

Hen2018 · 31/01/2022 08:58

@Maireas

Did they come out, *@Hen2018*? Anyway. No current senior royal has come out (to my knowledge), I'm responding to the poster who said Andrew is gay.
Lord Mountbatten is married to a man so I guess he’s out!
Maireas · 31/01/2022 09:02

@Hen2018 oh that Mountbatten - you mean Ivar? Not a senior royal.
He is a relative though, and out.
Anyway, pp said Andrew was gay, I was mainly correcting that.

SerendipityJane · 31/01/2022 09:10

@JSL52

I'm a republican but I can't believe the lack of knowledge on here.
You surely can't be surprised by the state of the nation ?

You say that, I knew someone at university who didn't know who the Prime Minister was. When I told him who it was, he hadn't heard of him...
SleepingStandingUp · 31/01/2022 09:36

Young people not knowing who Edward is isn't going to lead to the abolition of the RF. See how many of them have no idea who William and Kate are.

PriamFarrl · 31/01/2022 09:41

The lack of general knowledge is seen on things like Pointless.
I was shocked the other day when only just over 50 of the 100 people knew the first man on the moon.
