Things we don't need in 2022 like we did 10 years ago

Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

OP posts:

The delivery apps take a huge cut out of the price so the restaurant either loses money or puts up their prices, so I don't really want to be part of all that. It's usually quicker to collect anyway.

And it’s cold by the time you get it.

@ChessieFL

We still have CDs, DVDs and lots of books in our house and my husband still gets phone top ups!
Same. No point getting new stuff just because.

A 2012 diary

YourVagesty · 30/01/2022 18:33

@Quackpot you are so right! That's an obvious one we've all missed.

Just before Christmas, DH and I were leaving Sainsburys and there was a woman outside having a cigarette. The smell of it was a real blast from the past and we both commented that you just don't smell or see smoking anymore.

Porridgeislife · 30/01/2022 18:33

Having a TomTom satnav that you carefully hid out of sight when your park was parked up, for fear someone would break in to steal it.

We use Apple CarPlay for Google maps through the car’s infotainment system or very occasionally the native VW satnav (which is rubbish).

FatFredsFriedEgg · 30/01/2022 18:33

Somebody mentioned cash.

I took £1,000 out in March 2020 and I've still got over £400 hidden away. Most of it's gone to the gardener or DGC as gifts.

There is just nowhere I spend cash now.

emilyintheSE · 30/01/2022 18:34

It was only 2012... some of the stuff on here Confused You took a digital camera out on a night out?? We had sophisticated camera phones by then.

Kindles were absolutely a thing in 2012.

We've had Amazon prime in 2012 too so don't know about that one either!

We also had Netflix by the end of 2012. DVDs were well on their way out by this point.

Is everyone a late adopter on here or what?!

I don't think 2012 is much different to now. Except for smoking and carrier bags. 25 years ago though, different world entirely. Feel like I grew up through a technological revolution, everything changed rapidly and constantly.

YourVagesty · 30/01/2022 18:43

I think it depends where you live. I live rurally so I only started streaming Netflix etc about four years ago because I didn't have the broadband to support it.

And I still can't use food delivery apps because none are available here Sad

User7698365 · 30/01/2022 18:44

Actually 2012 wasn't that different, you need to go back to the mid 90s to see a real difference, when dial up internet was a thing

It’s still a great money making model for restaurants. That’s how dark kitchens have taken off and have fewer overheads. Criticizing change just for the sake of it doesn’t make sense, unless you understand the model.
SquirrelG · 30/01/2022 18:48

Cd, dvds, books

I still use those - and a landline. Wouldn't want to be without any of them.

justasking111 · 30/01/2022 18:49

In 2012 I had a laptop and a Nokia.

Now I have laptop, kindle android phone and tablet I've two drawers full of wires and plugs, 12 old phones, four old laptops, Three or more old tablets

It's nuts when you think about it

LemonDrizzles · 30/01/2022 18:49

Wired mobile phone headphones

Mushrooms0up · 30/01/2022 18:50

@emilyintheSE definitely took a camera out as blackberrys were still a huge thing as a student for the free BBM. The transition to iPhone was late 2012 (just checked and I got mine November 2012).

(See the tiny tempah song Miami 2 Ibiza). Similarly reminded me that Audi TTs were the it car of the time.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 30/01/2022 18:51

Any kind of box connected to the tv (dvd player, sky box etc.)
Landline phone
Purse
Bus pass
Alarm clock
Camera
CD player
Recipe books (still use them out of preference but don't need to have the physical books)
Physical loyalty cards (the ones I use are all on my phone now)
Printed boarding passes for air travel
Pen and paper in bag when out and about in case you need to jot anything down
No need to remember phone numbers or passwords for websites
Rarely need my actual bank card.
Memory cards
Usb sticks

justasking111 · 30/01/2022 18:52

@LemonDrizzles

Wired mobile phone headphones
Forgot about those I used to drop stuff off bedside table when I nodded off and turned over. Love my ear buds
SquirrelG · 30/01/2022 18:54

Camera - everyone just uses their phone

Not everyone. Serious photographers still use cameras. I still use a film camera, and so do many others - including a lot of young people. Try looking up some film cameras on Ebay, the prices are eye-watering.

justasking111 · 30/01/2022 18:54

We still have a physical note pad in the kitchen for shopping, use it up, write it down. Want something write it down

StepAwayFromGoogling · 30/01/2022 18:58

Men Grin

IcedPurple · 30/01/2022 19:06

I still use pen and paper.

I order takeaways over the phone and collect them myself.

I occasionally watch DVDs.

I don't use Uber.

I have a landline, wired headphones, a printer and USB sticks.

Now I'm feeling very behind the times!

Luredbyapomegranate · 30/01/2022 19:10

Hair straighteners.

I mean I hardly used them, but used to think I SHOULD

It's nuts that you've kept all this stuff and not sold it.

I 'only' change my phone every 3 or 4 years but I always sell the old one and get a decent chunk of money towards the new one.

Last time I sold a crappy old Huawei for £60 and got a fab black Friday deal on a far better Motorola for £75.

User7698365 · 30/01/2022 19:13

Phone cameras are ok for snaps like I do but DH does astrophotography which needs a proper camera with settings, he also uses lots of different lenses. Camera equipment is very much used still.

saltandpepper234 · 30/01/2022 19:21

@WingingItSince1973

Landline. Going to Blockbusters on Friday night to rent a dvd. I don't think we even have a dvd player anymore, it's all streamed.
Were you really still going to blockbusters in 2012? I feel like that died in about ‘06
