Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

OP posts:
About10thusername · 30/01/2022 19:33

Gel liner with a flick
Heels
Usb sticks
Oyster cards

User7698365 · 30/01/2022 19:35

Don't people wear heels now, they always seem to have really high ones on telly.

CounsellorTroi · 30/01/2022 19:37

MrsPerfect12
Cd, dvds, books
Yeah I can't agree with that, books are very much needed, especially for children, electronic versions are just not the same

Agreed, and DVDs are still useful if you are staying in a holiday cottage without WIFI.

User7698365 · 30/01/2022 19:41

Surely people use a mixture of new and older stuff depending on the situation, streaming in our touring caravan is pretty near impossible, sometimes even Freeview doesn't work that well so we watch DVDs

EinsteinaGogo · 30/01/2022 19:41

@notacooldad

Oh yeah and ringing for a takeaway! I still do that but that's because I order something that isnt on the menu.
Our local Chinese takeaway is still phone only, collection only.

It's good quality so everyone just accepts it.

I wonder when they will ever move with the times. As soon as a competitor gets added on Just Eat , I expect.

CounsellorTroi · 30/01/2022 19:41

@CrimbleCrumble1

Picking up our own takeaways.
Still do. I don’t think want to stop doing things li,e that until I physically can’t any more.
Runningmummy41 · 30/01/2022 19:44

I’m a type 1 diabetic (have been most my life) and how things have changed over the last ten years! 10 years ago I got my first insulin pump, meaning I didn’t have to inject insulin anymore (unless the pump fails/breaks). It’s an amazing piece of technology which has made my life so much better. I don’t even have to prick my fingers to check my blood glucose level multiple times a day anymore. I have an app on my phone and a sensor in my arm which I change every 2 weeks which tells me what my levels are.

Daisychainsandglitter · 30/01/2022 20:26

Digital camera and iPod.

lostteaspoon · 30/01/2022 20:44

I love my eyeliner with a flick Grin although my eyes look a lot more tired than they did in 2012
teaandtoastwithmarmite · 30/01/2022 21:20

@Luredbyapomegranate

Hair straighteners.

I mean I hardly used them, but used to think I SHOULD

You're lucky. I have to use mine every day. I even have a cheap back up pair in case they die.
Heartofglass12345 · 30/01/2022 21:39

I had Netflix in 2012 and it was rubbish Grin

I still use ISB sticks! And have lots of DVD's, still have some CD's from when I was younger but don't have a CD player anymore, can play them on the DVD player though Grin

brunonononono · 30/01/2022 21:45

Anyone remember Love film? Like blockbuster but you’d be sent dvds in the post then post them back. Think that was pre-2012 though.

Cryalot2 · 30/01/2022 21:54

I have a kindle ,but will always have books. Some go back a long way and are handed down.

We still have: a tv, landline , printer , car. Still have some paper maps which we use.

Never had sky or the likes. Dont have pc, dvd player, cassette player, radio, heels fondue sets , bbqs ( hate them ) bathroom scales .

hangrylady · 30/01/2022 21:54

@MrsPerfect12

Cd, dvds, books
I still use all of these Blush
FrankieBoyleSezLoveOneAnother · 30/01/2022 21:55

We had Lovefilm from c2006-2013, it was really good.

hangrylady · 30/01/2022 21:56

Oyster card. Just use my debit card no when I go to London

frazzledfragglefromfragglerock · 30/01/2022 22:01

Landline phone. Completely unnecessary!

maffhew · 30/01/2022 22:10

Everyone confused by mobile phone top ups, I think OP is referring to the olden days when you had to go to a shop to buy a top up voucher to put credit on your phone.

Of course topping up your phone is still a thing, but you can do it from the luxury of your home now.

Grilledaubergines · 30/01/2022 22:11

@Accidentgirlfriend

Heels
Heels on shoes are very much still needed! You’d wear through the soles in days otherwise! Why do you think they’re not?
Spudina · 30/01/2022 22:14

Landlines
I’m begging the times but I do still like CDs. I have a player in my car and house

Grilledaubergines · 30/01/2022 22:15

@Phrenologistsfinger

Petrol/diesel cars
Diesel maybe but petrol cars are definitely needed. Christ when the alternative is electric, it’s a worry. Electric cars will prove to be a massive white elephant.
Refrosty · 30/01/2022 22:17

I'm unsure what's next for handheld devices. Telephone facilities was the primary focus, but it's so much more than that. It's killed the landline, digital camera, need for personal laptop for casual web browsing etc. What's next?

Phrenologistsfinger · 30/01/2022 22:20

@Grilledaubergines I answered this truthfully - we went electric three years ago and haven’t looked back! Haven’t used or sat in an old-fashioned dirty ICE car at all. This includes rural living, many long distance drives, packed full with dogs and luggage along the length of the UK and around multiple countries on the continent. EVs are simply better.

SarahAndQuack · 30/01/2022 22:20

@Shehasadiamondinthesky

I'm 60 so I'm still young enough to have caught up with everything online such as banking and social media but for anyone older than me it is a very lonely world especially if you cannot leave your home. Most of my elderly patients still rely on cheques, have no way or understanding of getting on line and are totally isolated from the modern world. Many don't speak to anyone for days on end.
Is this a joke?

You know plenty of people aged over 60 are still working full-time in jobs that require them to be conversant with all of these things, right? My dad is 72 and I would say quite old-fashioned in his ways, but he'd be quite insulted at this sort of generalisation.

Is it possible your patients belong to a very specific sub-group of their age bracket?

Youngstreet · 30/01/2022 22:26

@SarahAndQuack. Tbf my parents were very internet and tech savvy until they hit mid 80’s.
My df who has accounts etc on his laptop really struggles to remember how to use it now. It’s sad.
