Just a Sunday thought remembering how we used to get phone top ups

OP posts:
Mushrooms0up · 30/01/2022 17:43

I was at uni in 2012 and things that I did then that are now completely redundant:

Taking a camera on a night out
Blackberry messenger
DVDs
Getting black cabs / calling a taxi. (All via Uber now)
Being able to get the bus for 50p
A TV with a built in DVD player
Black bodycon skirts for a night out
USB sticks

Pbbananabagel · 30/01/2022 17:51

Notebooks. Now it all goes in phone/ipad

YewandOak · 30/01/2022 17:52

@thewhatsit

Not sure what is meant by phone top ups?

I stopped topping up a PAYG phone when I got a pay monthly, the week I turned 18 and could get one on my own. I thought PAYG was a thing teenagers had, has it changed?

I've had payg since my first mobile in 1997. Works for me. I mainly use my desktop pc to do stuff online and have a landline phone for long phone calls.
notacooldad · 30/01/2022 17:52

Oh yeah and ringing for a takeaway!
I still do that but that's because I order something that isnt on the menu.

thegcatsmother · 30/01/2022 17:53

I have a TV with a built in DVD player. It works, so why replace it? For those who say it's luddite not to have everything on your phone/streamed, some people choose not to have smart phones. Surely it's better to use what you have, rather than replace it because it's the newest iPhone or whatever?

thegcatsmother · 30/01/2022 17:55

I have over 400 cookbooks, and we have various cameras around, as you'd be hard pushed to take a photo on either of our phones. Dh ditched the smartphone when he retired.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/01/2022 17:56

We still ring for takeaways and go and collect them.

The delivery apps take a huge cut out of the price so the restaurant either loses money or puts up their prices, so I don't really want to be part of all that. It's usually quicker to collect anyway.

sleaf · 30/01/2022 17:59

Not a lot has changed in 10 years IMO.

camelfinger · 30/01/2022 18:04

Oyster cards.
Using a laptop rather than phone for home internet tasks.
Plastic bags.
Magazines.
An actual radio.
CD player in the car.
Free newspapers on the tube.
Fish pedicures.

justasking111 · 30/01/2022 18:05

Kindle these days, papers read online. Still pay cash to hairdresser, window cleaner and my local garage. Also tip with cash when eating out

Locally very few takeaways do deliveries so pick up. I envy DS with his choice in Leeds all delivered

User7698365 · 30/01/2022 18:06

We have a TV with a built in DVD player in our caravan, most caravan site wifi is barely good enough for internet browsing so it would be hard to stream TV, it's generally just freeview or the DVD player

Patienceandgrace · 30/01/2022 18:08

I just bought a DVD this afternoo, cant remember the last time I did before that though.

SenecaFallsRedux · 30/01/2022 18:10

What has always interested me though is are cheques still used in the States?

Yes, they are still used, but much less than 10 years ago. I am in the US; I write 1-2 checks a month, but most bills are paid online. I don't receive very many, though. The other day I had to deposit one, and when I got to the bank's drive-thorough automatic teller, it took me a minute or two to remember how to do it.

I still use my printer often. My work involves a lot of writing and editing, and I am old school enough that I need to do my final proofread on a paper document.

User7698365 · 30/01/2022 18:11

I also never use my phone for internet tasks in the house, I have a large iMac and iPad which are both preferable to use than a titchy little iPhone. I only use my phone when I go out.

NatashaBedwouldbenice · 30/01/2022 18:11

Oyster card was my first thought too.

Personally - hair straighteners, make-up and under-wired bras Grin

lostteaspoon · 30/01/2022 18:19

Absolutely this - it’s cheaper and quicker to ring them, order, and collect. The Indian takeaway we use is only a 5 min drive away and the food is always piping hot when we collect.

I’ve never used Uber though - our local taxi firm has a really good app and their prices are reasonable.

Echobelly · 30/01/2022 18:19

Digital cameras unless you're a serious photographer

To have to go on a big excursion to buy kids' birthday presents or children's clothes that you need urgently thanks to Amazon and Next's very quick delivery - often been a lifesaver as you don't often get local shops sellings those things so if you're working all week and have a busy weekend they're immensely helpful.

Violinist64 · 30/01/2022 18:21

I have a kindle but still like “real” books as well. I recorded all my cds onto a computer and then a card which I have in my Samsung tablet. I still have some cds for the car but gave the others away. We have a lot of dvds but l don’t remember the last time we watched one. The cloud is a mystery to me as things seem to go into it and I have no idea how to retrieve them. I rely on other functions such as this Dropbox or Drive instead.

Pyewhacket · 30/01/2022 18:21

@MrsPerfect12

Cd, dvds, books
Speak for your self. I read books, hardbacks. And I use a fountain pen, with real ink. I also have a large collection of CD's, DVD's and vinyl records.
Chewbecca · 30/01/2022 18:23

I had a phone contract 10 years ago but binned it in favour of top ups coz it’s cheaper for the exact same outcome.

YourVagesty · 30/01/2022 18:26

How are people doing all the streaming that makes their satellite dish redundant if they don't have landline?

I have fibre optic that gives me the Internet for streaming. There is a port on the box for a land-line telephone if I wanted one, but I'd have to pay extra and I just don't think its worth it.

I did wonder recently if The Radio Times would see a bit of a renaissance. I've got Now TV, Netflix,Disney etc. Plus apps for channel four, BBC, ITV and whatnot. Its kind of hard to keep track of what's on when. Be nice to flick through a Radio Times to see what's on.

The only live TV menu I have is for the sky channels (via NowTV). So I never know what's on BBC1 or E4 for example. Not unless I specifically go into those apps.

Quackpot · 30/01/2022 18:27

Cigarettes. I and most people I know have quit, and those who haven't, switched to rolling their own or vaping

toconclude · 30/01/2022 18:30

@tillytoodles1

CD player.
I need mine.
