New washing machine - as Miele's worth it?

twosticksandanapple · 30/01/2022 10:13

My 12 year old lg one has just died so I am hurriedly looking for a replacement but it is really confusing.

I don't mind spending a bit more for one that will last but I looked at Miele and was surprised to see they only come with a 2 year guarantee now. Does anyone know if the new Miele's are worth it? I thought they used to come with a 10 year guarantee so 2 years seems pretty pathetic given the price of them.

Are there any brands people would recommend for longitivity? I don't need any snazzy features, just something quiet and dependable.

We can see this thread is quite old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options, from Miele and other brands, that are loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I had a 8 kilo AEG, for 16 years, It was still working when we sold the house (& the new owners bought all the white goods,) it had had an absolute thrashing as I had a house rental business & was washing sandy towels & linen etc at an industrial level.
Plus one winter I rented if to mariners & they washed all their yacht's sofa covers & it was much too heavy, never wuite the same again !!!
I also have a 15k Samsung, its been thrashed too, Its now 9 years old

SirVixofVixHall · 30/01/2022 20:14

My Miele is 14 , used every day .
Although - I was told by a washing machine person to always get it repaired if at all possible if anything goes wrong, and not to buy a new one as the newer ones aren’t made in the same place and are not as good.

PickAChew · 30/01/2022 20:19

AEG is not what it was 14 years ago. Used to stick with their washers until the last one which was a warranty replacement for one that broke in every way possible and that only lasted a couple of years. It always took weeks for someone to come out and repair it.

Past two have been Siemens. Left one behind as it wouldn’t have fitted in this kitchen. The one we have now is 4 years old and on its last legs- noisy pump, iffy control panel, sometimes doesn’t even make a half hearted effort to spin but with an incontinent teen, it’s definitely exceeded it 10,000 hours. If it went completely, tomorrow, the choice for the space we have for it is between an equivalent Bosch or an LG.

Bought my Miele (a quite basic one) from John Lewis 14 years ago. JL gave an additional year's warranty. It won't matter if the warranty is 2, 3 5 or 10 years. At 14 years it has never gone wrong and never needed any repair or replacement and works as though new. When I had a different make that lasted that long it had had various repairs and replacements parts and took 3 tines as long as it did originally to do a wash.

Mile is the way to go

We have an LG that washes brilliantly, but it has needed repair twice now - both times for circuit boards, so not covered by the warranty. I’d be interested to know how the 15kg Haier performs, @hennaoj

Samanabanana · 30/01/2022 20:23

I really dislike our miele. It doesn't wash well- our old beko did a better job!

It washes really well. I love the programs and it looks like Darth Vaders bathroom. The huge door is brilliant. However it didn't like the non return valve that was supplied by our water company so we had to remove that from the plumbing under the sink.
ghislaine · 30/01/2022 21:36

I discovered a site called ukwhitegoods.co.uk in my searches to learn where various appliances are actually made. There’s a massive run down on every brand you can imagine as well as a forum where enthusiasts discuss things such as split tub washing machines and the placement of circuit boards.

It’s been quite the eye-opener.

JurgensCakeBabyJesus · 30/01/2022 21:41

I spend good money on cookers and fridge freezers, washing machines I buy cheap. We bought a Candy washing machine with a huge drum nearly six years ago when we moved to our current house as a stop gap as our old one literally fell apart when the movers moved it. It's still going strong and we do 7-10 loads a week including bedding

SusannaQueen · 30/01/2022 21:47

I'm not sure I'd put much faith in comments that say my Miele is 16yrs old and still going great guns, it's not the same as one built today. I had a Siemens washer that lasted 19yrs, I replaced it with a second hand Siemens that was 10yrs old (didn't realise that when I bought it, but it was £40 so not the end of the world), it was faultless for another 5yrs. I automatically replaced it with another new Siemens and whilst it seems reliable, it's not a patch on the other two - Doesn't wash as well, the programs are ridiculously inconvenient, it has problems spinning small loads.

If I was choosing again, I would especially look at the details of programs, not the brand. Yes, they may use less energy/water but only on programs that take 4hrs+. Mine is 9kg, but only on one wash that takes 2.5hrs. The shorter washes only hold a tiny load.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/01/2022 21:50

Yes definitely but avoid any with a twin dos system as they're annoying to bypass and use your own detergent. You also pay a lot extra for wifi programmes etc .

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/01/2022 21:51

My last one lasted 21 years and I used it every day.

Oliack1417 · 30/01/2022 22:04

I inherited our Miele washer and dryer (separate) when we moved into our house about 8 years ago. I got the impression they were fairly old when we moved in.
I have never had a problem with either of them, and they are used daily, often multiple times. The poor washer has to deal with muddy trainers and football kits every week.

Oliack1417 · 30/01/2022 22:06

I remember the removal guy (old fella) stopping to look at them on moving in day, and proclaiming them the "rolls Royce of washing machines them!"

Dbank · 31/01/2022 08:49

Miele are one of the few companies that still make appliances that last... but at a price. Your mileage my vary but I've got 5 of their appliances some are over 20 years only, none of them have every gone wrong, apart from the very occasional oven bulb.

From an environmental point of view, it's far better to buy something that might cost more money but doesn't need to be landfilled every 5 years.

Manufactures make rubbish appliances, because so many people only consider the short term cost.

@mbosnz

I have a samsung washer and a dryer, and got those on the strength of the samsung dishwasher I got. I flipping love them. We had one wee hiccup with the dryer when it was newly installed, engineer was out the next day, fixed it within five minutes, most apologetic, has run like a dream ever since. Very effective, energy friendly, quiet, and huge load capacity.

Now have the Samsung American style fridge, and love that too.

We did this the other way around and bought the Samsung dishwasher having been really impressed with the tumble drier and then washing machine. The latter two have been going strong for about 4 years now. Dishwasher is only a year old but is also excellent, I'm really impressed with Samsung.
Crazykatie · 31/01/2022 09:24

I have a Samsung Ecobubble trouble free for 5 yrs, good range of programs, does the job no sign of any wear yet.

Zandathepanda · 31/01/2022 10:14

My miele regularly tells me to call an engineer - complete with alarms and codes flashing. It’s anti long hair and fabric conditioner. Luckily I can get into the drain thing at the base and untwist the grot so haven’t ever had an engineer out. When it’s being particularly pedantic I bung on an empty 90 degree wash to ‘clear’ it out - but can only do this by repeatedly turning it on and off again until it forgets it wants an engineer. It doesn’t stop beeping once any cycle is off which means you have to get up to switch it off. The only alternative is to completely silence the beeps but then you forget the cycle is finished. It also reverted all instructions to Malay the other day when I was cursing it. Thankfully this seems to be a known problem so I googled myself out of that one.
The worse thing is that it does a really weird thing to jumpers. The arms become really long and the bodies short. Mostly on cheaper jumpers. My DD’s favourite jumper ended up the same length width wise as her bed length 180cm. The length from neck to waist was 30cm. It’s happened several times. Even on a wool wash the knits come out crunchy.

I darent say I hate my Miele as it will get me back. But it’s not being replaced with another Miele.

Runnerduck34 · 31/01/2022 10:39

I'm on my second miele, first one lasted over 10 years, family of 6 so do lots of washing, around 2 -3 loads every day.
I do really rate them.
I bought my first one after the miele in a holiday cottage got rid of stains on my toddlers clothes that had been there for months! First one was a sale bargain second one had to buy at full price so got a basic entry level one ( less programs) but still really good, although the eco cotton wash takes 3.5 hours!! So don't tend use eco mode -It is about 3 -4 years old now though.
Not impressed they've reduced their warranties to 2 years, sometimes retailers like John Lewis extend a warranty for free so might be worth a look.

I reckon that if you ever did call a Miele engineer out rather than do a fix up job yourself All your issues would clear up!
Jellycatrabbit · 31/01/2022 11:44

Zandathepanda omg the beeping. Yes. I haven't worked out how to turn it off on mine yet. But I do have the app, so as well as being frantically beeped at from the machine (which Im sure the neighbours must hate too) I also get pestered by my phone!

Buzzer3555 · 31/01/2022 11:50

I have a samsung ...its fab

umberellaonesie · 31/01/2022 19:07

Our miele engineer said the biggest issue they get called out for is people use too much detergent and fabric softener and don't clean the filters or do hot washes often enough.
They are designed to do long slow washes at lower temps to get the A+ eco rating but you need to be sure to measure the washing powder accurately and do regular hot maintain washes

Zandathepanda · 31/01/2022 20:34

Toa no it’s a reoccurring problem so much so that Miele/John Lewis told me to check and sort it myself as it’s a known ‘thing’ as others have said, so I would be charged for a call out if I hadn’t done these first. I have given up using fabric conditioner and powder. Comfort conditioner ends up as an orange then black mouldy mess in the drawer after a while as it doesn’t get washed out. It seems ok with liquid detergent. It needs to have a 90 degree wash fairly regularly. My last machine (J Lewis own brand) worked fine until it’s didn’t after 10 years. This Miele one is very demanding.

Needtogetoffmyphone · 01/02/2022 07:33

We have two dishwashers (big family. I laughed at the idea, but it’s been a godsend).
The Miele one was constantly demanding - filters blocked (with tiny piece of food), more rinse aid needed etc etc.
The Neff one just got on with it.

Had to call the Miele repair guy out several times - ultimately it broke completely- and we replaced it because the last repair was too expensive.

I can’t remember what make the new one is - but it’s a lot less fuss than Miele.
