New washing machine - as Miele's worth it?

twosticksandanapple · 30/01/2022 10:13

My 12 year old lg one has just died so I am hurriedly looking for a replacement but it is really confusing.

I don't mind spending a bit more for one that will last but I looked at Miele and was surprised to see they only come with a 2 year guarantee now. Does anyone know if the new Miele's are worth it? I thought they used to come with a 10 year guarantee so 2 years seems pretty pathetic given the price of them.

Are there any brands people would recommend for longitivity? I don't need any snazzy features, just something quiet and dependable.

We can see this thread is quite old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options, from Miele and other brands, that are loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I have a samsung washer and a dryer, and got those on the strength of the samsung dishwasher I got. I flipping love them. We had one wee hiccup with the dryer when it was newly installed, engineer was out the next day, fixed it within five minutes, most apologetic, has run like a dream ever since. Very effective, energy friendly, quiet, and huge load capacity.

Now have the Samsung American style fridge, and love that too.

I think insurance after 2 yrs maybe wise if expensive machine, I’d go for aeg, seen some at ao with 5 yr warranty, seems good.
Miele seems excessive, have Bosch dishwasher great, use roughly every other day, 5 yrs old, great and about £350, not bad

jytdtysrht · 30/01/2022 15:05

I would stick with basic-mid. Most washing machines have a very short lifespan compared to years ago. If Miele can only be repaired by them, that’s a major problem. You need something you can call a local repair person out for imo.

HappiestHippo123 · 30/01/2022 15:18

I was advised to go for a cheap one as washing machines don’t last as long as they used to last. This time we got a cheap basic machine with as few electronic parts as possible. It has an old fashioned dial. I had a pretty basic hot point which I got second hand as a student it lasted over 15 years! My bosch lasted 6/7 but was barely used, maybe 2 x per week. The zanussi lasted around 4 but had a daily load as young kids and cloth nappies, however it died with water in it and has no drain function (again something you may want to check for as was heavy to get to the tip).

Also if you use 30 min/short washes check this carefully as some don’t have a short cycle. Look at previous mumsnet threads.

I replaced a 15 year old Miele about 4 years ago, some models had 5 years guarantee, some only 2, but after I bought it Miele wrote to me quite often offering to provide a 5 or ten year guarantee as an add on.

I've only had to get an engineer out to one once, and I found the service brilliant, came out the next morning, shared their pork pie with the dog Grin, fixed it with no hassle.

BUT the new miele's programmes are in my opinion, ridiculously long. 3 and 1/2 hours to wash a load of cotton bedsheets for example, it makes eg putting a load on in the early evening and drying and putting away the same evening hard going, whereas this is what I would routinely do before.

Apparently this is to get a A+ eco rating, they have to use very little water so wash for ages instead. I don't know if all brands have moved to this as well as Miele, but its a PITA

I’ve had a terrible experience recently with Miele customer service / servicing. They left us without a working washing machine for nearly 3 months.

Ikeptgoing · 30/01/2022 15:28

I have a Samsung (Diamond 6.0kg) washing machine - having had many that broke after 4 years this one has lasted 10 years so far. It sings to me when items are done and is heavily used as a large family. I love it.

Sausagis · 30/01/2022 15:31

My mum purchased a Miele not long ago and was told that this one part (I can't remember what tho!) used to always be well made metal in Miele but now the cheaper Miele replaced it with a plastic one and the shop said it wouldn't last as long. Bit of a cheek since "cheaper " Miele aren't cheap!

Anjo2011 · 30/01/2022 15:33

I bought my Miele washing machine and separate dryer around six years ago. Got a 10 year guarantee with my machine and paid for an extended one with the tumble dryer. Previous to these I had a Bosch, Hotpoint and Zanussi that lasted no more than four or five years each. I’ve been really happy with them, on the years we’ve had it I think I’ve called out on the warranty three times for the machine, each time nothing major but needed a visit. I haven’t had to call anyone for my tumble dryer. In my experience yes they have been worth it and when the time comes , hopefully not for a while, I will replace with Miele.

Toanewstart22 · 30/01/2022 15:33

Hell. Yes!!!

Toanewstart22 · 30/01/2022 15:34

The extended warranty is absolutely brilliant

GrumpyPanda · 30/01/2022 15:36
Thanks all. I don't think the newer Miele's are even made in Germany anymore, really not sure about them. Does anyone have any experience with Samsung? They have a 5 year guarantee.

I also came across a company called ebac with a 7 year guarantee. Has anyone used them, they are made in the UK www.ebac.com/washing-machines/our-range/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjY7U26nZ9QIV5ejtCh3FpgCeEAAYASAAEgKGPPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
According to the Miele website their washers are still produced at their home base in Gütersloh m.miele.com/de/com/deutschland-werk-guetersloh-2304.htm#referrer=. They do have a handful of production sites abroad, but presumably use them for other parts of their product range. FWIW my mother's Miele is still going strong at twenty or so years. I bought a new lower end model last year and am content.

As far as other brands go, I think Bosch/Neff/Constructa do still manufacture in Germany as does Whirlpool (the former Bauknecht production) whereas AEG is made in Turkey these days.

originalbadass · 30/01/2022 15:39

If you go to the JL website you can select by warranty - Samsung, AEG and Siemens seem to have a five year warranty as standard.

I have a local repair man that works on Miele so they are available.

hennaoj · 30/01/2022 15:40

Replaced our 13 year old Miele recently with a Haier. The Haier has a 5 year warranty, direct drive and a huge capacity. Miele would have been twice the price, 2 year warranty and not the build quality of the old one. Very happy with the Haier. My parents have a newer Miele and it's a right pain, it won't let you open the door on it for 5 minutes after it's finished washing!

2022HereWeCome · 30/01/2022 15:40

Love my miele - bought about 5 years ago. But I bought the cheapest one with the most basic programmes as you don't really need many options. Miele customer service was excellent when the tumble dryer developed a fault 3 years in - complete door replacement. i had a bosch previously and didn't rate it - didn't seem to get the clothes particularly clean and still cost a huge amount of money

StandardPoodle · 30/01/2022 17:38

My base model Miele has a 10 year warranty - it's about 6 years old and has had quite some use (trouble free).
I'd certainly recommend them.

ButtockUp · 30/01/2022 17:42

It's really frustrating.
We always used to have Bosch but when our aged Bosch dishwasher gave up the ghost , we went to Curry's. Our local Curry's , like most branches, is enormous but only had two integrated dishwashers to show us... a Bosch and a Smeg. ( Bizarrely had row upon row of American fridge/freezers!)

Anyway, we opted for the only model of Bosch , integrated dishwasher. The sales assistant asked us why we were hung up on Bosch. We replied with stuff like reliability , longevity etc... and he warned us that much of Bosch's production had been removed to Spain and so their warranty was slashed from 5 to 2 years as they were no longer reliable.

So we were left with the Smeg and we bought it.

Oh my days...our plates suddenly didn't fit, the detergent dispenser was hit and miss, the top rack items didn't clean properly and if you filled it properly, loads of items wouldn't clean. It was like you had to half or ( at most) three quarter fill the dishwasher, else it wouldn't clean.

Really hated having to wash pots and pans etc... whilst having a ruddy dishwasher.

It died before 2 years. We should have complained but we just wanted rid of it.

Went back to Bosch , via AO and never looked back.

Iamanicepersonreally · 30/01/2022 17:47

I bought a Samsung because of the five year guarantee. It's been brilliant. I had an AEG before that and had nothing but trouble with it.

umberellaonesie · 30/01/2022 19:02

Yes Miele is worth it I have just replaced mine after 12 years.
The engineer told us the 20 years use is around 10000 hours of use.
When he plugged ours into his computer thing it had done 17000 hours of washing so we definitely got our money's worth.
We replaced it with another one.

Piggyk2 · 30/01/2022 19:08

I have a Samsung echo bubble and a warranty is all well and good but the problem is what does it cover exactly?

My Samsung seal has a slight fault with the seal causing it to leak costing £180 with my Samsung guarantee as its not covered under the warranty.

I had a Zanussi washer for over 10 years prior. I wouldn't spend anymore than £400/£500 on a washer OP.

Needtogetoffmyphone · 30/01/2022 19:31

We will never buy Miele again. When we updated our kitchen virtually all the white goods are Miele. It’s been 6 years, and we’ve had to repair the freezer, the fridge door, the hob and replace the coffee machine. I am so angry at them. Costs a fortune and then appliances don’t last

fussychica · 30/01/2022 19:39

14 year old AEG here, dreading the day I have to replace it, fantastic machine.
Thought I might get a Miele next time but now only the top models seem to be made in Germany and have the extended guarantee so will probably stick with AEG if I can get one which offers what I want. Would consider a Bosch too as our dishwasher has been top notch.

BigGreen · 30/01/2022 19:56

I bought a Siemens which had 5 year warranty included and it's been great. I did get a really good offer though it was £480 or so and they seem a lot more expensive now. It's been going 7 years now.

BigGreen · 30/01/2022 19:59

With Siemens we had a full parts and labour warranty so it's pretty much guaranteed for 5 years service at least.

Buttermuffin · 30/01/2022 20:05

Our 15 year old meile washing machine is going to need replacing this year . The engineer came out recently to fix something and told me unless you pay for the commercial machine then they are not what they were. We replaced the Miele dryer with a Logic one (I think). I probably won't buy a Miele again.
