New washing machine - as Miele's worth it?

twosticksandanapple · 30/01/2022 10:13

My 12 year old lg one has just died so I am hurriedly looking for a replacement but it is really confusing.

I don't mind spending a bit more for one that will last but I looked at Miele and was surprised to see they only come with a 2 year guarantee now. Does anyone know if the new Miele's are worth it? I thought they used to come with a 10 year guarantee so 2 years seems pretty pathetic given the price of them.

Are there any brands people would recommend for longitivity? I don't need any snazzy features, just something quiet and dependable.

We can see this thread is quite old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options, from Miele and other brands, that are loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

I've always stuck with Neff, I got 14 years out of the last one and there was an offer for a five year guarantee on my replacement.

You can always buy an extended warranty.

Holymotherforkingshirtballs · 30/01/2022 10:23

I don't know about the newer Miele, but ours is still going after 16 years so is well worth the money!

BeepBoopBop · 30/01/2022 10:25

Mine still going strong after over 20 years. Its fabulous.

bilbodog · 30/01/2022 10:29

I would get the cheapest miele - dont need lots of fancy programs.

millymae · 30/01/2022 10:59

I don’t think they are, especially as the guarantee is now not as long as it used to be, but if you can afford it and like the look of one, why not.
I say this as the owner of a Hoover that recently cost about £250 and replaced moreorless the same model that was 13 years old and had never let me down other than when it was under guarantee. I may have been lucky with that, I don’t know, but I couldn’t see the point of splashing out 3 or 4 times that amount on a Miele or similar even if I could have afforded to do so.
All I want from a machine is one that has a couple of good basic speedy programmes, a decent spin and a delay start.
I have an older friend who could buy and sell me many times over. Much of the stuff she owns is top of the range but her washing machine is at the other extreme. She buys cheap and replaces it if something major goes wrong, taking the view that she can buy 3 or 4 new for the same price as a more expensive brand.

Thanks all. I don't think the newer Miele's are even made in Germany anymore, really not sure about them. Does anyone have any experience with Samsung? They have a 5 year guarantee.

I also came across a company called ebac with a 7 year guarantee. Has anyone used them, they are made in the UK www.ebac.com/washing-machines/our-range/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjY7U26nZ9QIV5ejtCh3FpgCeEAAYASAAEgKGPPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I dont personally have a Samsung one but a friend does and its always breaking. When buying our last, we were advised Miele, AEG or Asko. We plumped for an AEG and its been fantastic. We were told that Bosch used to be great but now mostly made outside of Germany and quality has fallen but if you can get a German made one, it would be likely great

MrsClatterbuck · 30/01/2022 11:08

My AEG is 12 years old and the previous one lasted 10 years. My friends Miele is coming up on 16 years and going strong. My next one I am thinking either Bosch or Siemens. My Siemens dishwasher which we couldn't take with us when we moved to a new build (now had a built in dishwasher or I would have) was 19 years when we left and still going strong.

Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 30/01/2022 11:12

I put a wash on every day and I only use 2 of the programmes. I decided about 3 washing machines ago that I would just buy a cheapish one from now on. I generally spend up to £300 and when it breaks and is out of guarantee I just get a new one. I get 3 or 4 years out of each which is fine by me.

SiobhanSharpe · 30/01/2022 11:19

I was very surprised to learn that Miele machines only have a two year guarantee these days.
I wouldn't pay the high cost their products any more - and I've had a Miele washer dryer for well over 12 years now.
It had a five year guarantee when i bought it.
They are basically telling you their products aren't as good as they used to be!

WhatAWasteOfOranges · 30/01/2022 11:22

Is there a reason you don’t want another LG? I got one last year and it’s great and has a 10 year warranty on the motor

avocadotofu · 30/01/2022 11:25

We have a Miele and love it, definitely the best washing machine we've had (had Siemens in the past). We bought ours last year and it has a 10 year warranty which is brilliant too.

twosticksandanapple · 30/01/2022 11:44

I would get another lg but they seem to have very short guarantees as well now. I wonder why they have all be reduced this year. Maybe a covid supply or brexit issue?

If anyone knows of any washing machine that still has a 10 year guarantee I would be very grateful.

My Miele is now 16 years old and takes enormous abuse as we have swimmers in the house so constantly have towels being washed! I chose it due to the 10 year guarantee but maybe would be more reluctant to spend that sort of money with only a 2 year guarantee.

Jellycatrabbit · 30/01/2022 12:25

I've just bought a new Miele to replace our Bosch series 8 which died after 10 years hard service. I'm slightly in awe of it but also finding it quite hard work - the programmes are mostly pretty long and it seems to beeep a LOT. It does use a lot less power and water but I miss my nice simple Bosch.

Sliceofrice · 30/01/2022 13:29

I have a Samsung. It had a major fault at 4 year 7months, but Samsung replaced all the parts and the labor for free. I basically had a new washing machine, bar the casing, for free! The warranty was very easy to use and the guy that came said it was a rare issue with the machine- he'd only seen one other.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 30/01/2022 13:33

Do remember that if you ever need to repair a miele you will only ever get the company to do it. No other repairers will touch miele and sometimes they are weeks before they can attend. I would never have anything from them again for this reason. Service is pretty crap and expensive. I tend to go with bosch, as prefer to have something other peope can repair.

OvaHere · 30/01/2022 13:42

My Miele has been brilliant. Had it for around 17 years and only needed a repair once. It's had really heavy use too.

Some years ago I bought a Miele dishwasher on the basis the WM was so good and it was awful, broke constantly.

I guess how good their washing machines are now depends on whether they have a similar build quality to those of a couple of decades ago.

AtillatheHun · 30/01/2022 13:45

Miele servicing / repairs are awful and will simply try and offer you 20% off a new one (because they can’t fix it as they no longer manufacture spares). I had a kitchen full of Miele but will never buy again (Bosch washing machine now!)

Elasmotherium · 30/01/2022 13:51

I used to buy Miele but don't anymore. The cost of a minor repair (door catch replacement) was so astronomical that it made the machine uneconomical to repair.

For the cost of that repair I bought a Samsung Ecobubble machine and I have never regretted it.

Just had our kitchen and scullery/laundry completely refitted and bought new matching Samsung washing machine and tumble dryer. Honestly they are just brilliant - big load capacity, easy to use, multiple programmes etc.

Original Ecobubble is still going strong and is still in use in our annexe.

Wouldn't buy another brand now, Samsung all the way.

mandajmo · 30/01/2022 13:52

Bosch or Miele for me. Last forever as opposed to replacement every 2-3 years.

My experience exactly.

That's not my experience at all.

Miele washing machine - mine is 11 years and just out of warranty. They've been out three times to fix bits.

My mother's Miele washing machine lasted 25 years.

Although, as I understand it, you need to buy the ones manufactured in Germany not Spain.

CornishTiger · 30/01/2022 14:38

I had a Panasonic with a five year guarantee. Thank god it did. Was awful and had so many repairs. Now have an LG. So far so good.

I’d look at AEG too

rwalker · 30/01/2022 14:43

A lot of the 10 year guarantee's are parts only
