What makes someone dull / boring in your opinion?

What do you think makes someone fairly dull / insipid? What would make someone have no personality in your opinion? What would distinguish someone who is boring from someone who is fairly memorable and would make an impression on you?

OP posts:

When someone is telling a story adding in lots of unnecessary details. Get to the point! It might be an interesting story but I’ll get bored if you go into so much irrelevant detail.

Cheesechips · 30/01/2022 09:21

Not having their own opinions, hobbies or interests.

RedToothBrush · 30/01/2022 09:27

People who go to the same place on holiday every year. People who go to an all inclusive resort generally. People who accept what they are told at face value and don't think to question it. People who only ever do the same thing week in and week out - to the point that its the same meal at the same set time. And then have nothing to say about it.

Just anyone who doesn't have much to say about the world generally.

Thing is, even of your passion is reality tv, as long as you are going 'wtf did they do that for' or 'i cant believe social media are criticising them for that', i think thats fine. Might not always be my cup of tea (i have no snobbery over reality tv; some i love, some i think drivel).

I think its indifference and being stuck in a rut which you don't see or acknowledge that i find an issue.

Its that point where small talk runs out, cos they've got fuck all to say. Most people you can always find SOMETHING to talk about with.

silverley · 30/01/2022 09:56

People who just lecture you about a subject - I'm thinking specifically of my ex here, who would drone on and on, pleased with the sound of his own voice and at his own cleverness, on any number of topics (including topics I knew far more about than him). He couldn't read the room at all, it was embarrassing when I would see people visibly fidget and avoid eye contact as they were dying with boredom.

Also (thinking of another ex) people who make everything a joke. Every reply to anything you say is a jokey comment/banter. So tiresome.

ALSO! People who pretend everything is great. I'm thinking of a friend now, who always talks about how nice everything was - she could be hit by a bus and would be telling you how it was only really a very light impact and really it was all for the best. I never feel like there's much depth of conversation with people like this, you never know what they're actually feeling.

silverley · 30/01/2022 09:57

I don't know if I really answered your question OP but that was very cathartic! Grin

onreee · 30/01/2022 10:43

@UserBot9to5

I love the vivid descriptions, I feel like I'm there!😂

rambleonplease · 30/01/2022 12:12

People who complain about everything!

People who only talk about themselves... initially fine but eventually just boring and same old.

People who talk with a monotone voice and zero expression.

cuddlywuddly · 30/01/2022 12:32

People who cut you off mid sentence when you make the effort with them and who are limited on what they talk about. People who have a limited interest in life and only talks about people, the same people that are in their life who you don't know and they expect you to know everything about them. People who aren't interested in what's going on around them for example a dog will skateboard passed you and they would ignore that and continue talking about the same people you don't know. People you can't have deep meaningful conversations and just basically people who have no interest in you or the world around them. I've just described my mother in law and I just sometimes think watching a paint dry on the wall is more entertaining than forcing a conversation with her.

DickMabutt73962 · 30/01/2022 13:54

@WheelieBinPrincess

Someone who doesn’t really have an opinion on things, or ‘doesn’t mind’ what we eat/watch/do. ‘Up to you’ or ‘I don’t mind’ ALL THE TIME- have some personality!
This is mine as well. Had a work colleague who used to be a friend exactly like this. So I'd try to make a point of ask if her opinion to make her feel more involved in a conversation.

'Yeah, what you said'

Or just 'yeah...' that one really had to drive me mad. 'What did you think of x film?' Her: 'it was...yeah...' ???

DickMabutt73962 · 30/01/2022 13:57

Also people that exclaim that they don't like watching TV/movies and don't enjoy reading either. I have a friend who just likes talking on the phone and watching YouTube.

HomeHomeInTheRange · 30/01/2022 14:06

A closed mind, Fixed ideas that never change and are not open to being changed even a little bit
And are based on the status quo / convention / etiquette
Refusing to do anything other than as a couple
Having no wit, curiosity or wisdom (any one or combination is fine)
Fixed habits, no sense of adventure , even in choosing a different pizza topping, for e.g (disclaimer for neurodiversity)
Excessive vanity and / or self absorption
Any Relentless limited topic of conversation

MmeHennyPenny · 30/01/2022 14:14

My colleague relates long, involved descriptions of her dreams to me.
Every day.
I find her boring.

PattyPan · 30/01/2022 14:26

People who don't have any interests or their interests are only their immediate surroundings (like what the neighbours are up to or local potholes or their children or whatever).
There's the saying that great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events and small minds discuss people. I definitely find people who just want to discuss people much more boring.

PattyPan · 30/01/2022 14:29

I agree with chronic moaners as well. I have a 'friend' who basically only calls me to moan about her work, family, dating life etc. She never asks about me and I don't get much of a word in edgeways - it's basically an hour of her moaning and me going 'mmhm' 'yeah totally' 'sounds crap' while I do something else.

abcdeg · 30/01/2022 14:32

@MmeHennyPenny

Dream monologues are so awful. Literally nobody cares, it's not real. The self importance of thinking ones dreams are interesting as if everyone's brain doesn't do that

MrsGHarrison87 · 30/01/2022 14:55

I thought I'd made a new friend at my kids school and she is a nice person but she has no opinion on anything at all. Things that are going on in the world, she either doesn't know about them or doesn't state her true opinion ( if she has one ) for fear of saying the wrong thing and people thinking bad of her. She says I'm her best mate but we never have a laugh together or talk openly like I do with other friends. She's very easily shocked. Whether she keeps her cards close to her chest or whether she genuinely has nothing to say, I don't know.
She is interested in listening to me going on about things I've done and experiences I've had in life but gives nothing personal away about herself. Its formed a barrier in the growth of the friendship so I've disengaged with her as there's nothing to talk about beyond our children's school and that to me is boring.

Severntrent · 30/01/2022 15:04

People who show no interest in others or the world around them

mamaduckbone · 30/01/2022 21:14

@EishetChayil

Self-involved people who talk only of themselves.
This.
Cissyandflora · 30/01/2022 21:29

Someone who doesn’t show enough of themselves. So no deep and meaningful conversation. No interest in others past the superficial.

Lovemusic33 · 30/01/2022 21:35

I find a lot of people dull and boring, maybe because they are just not my kind of people. People that only talk about work and money, people that don’t see beauty in things that don’t cost money, people who don’t have an opinion or can’t voice an opinion.people that spend there time moaning about how hard life is really bore be and people who have no interests or hobbies.

FatLabrador · 30/01/2022 21:50

I'm not really one to judge people as boring, I'd more likely say I didn't have much in common with them. If someone is somewhat socially inept I would have some sympathy with that as I am not that great socially myself. Not to say I would want to hang around with those people I didn't click with but I wouldn't think they should change.

Ronacorona · 30/01/2022 23:38

People that have no hobbies, outside interests, or don't get excited about anything beyond their own existence.

ChicCroissant · 31/01/2022 00:36

What do you think makes someone fairly dull/insipid, OP?
Jultay · 31/01/2022 16:33

People who are only interested in what they have done ... they are totally uninterested in what you have done .

Dieting bores nowt worse

Everything you have done or had they have done or had bigger or better

Jultay · 31/01/2022 16:35

Oh and label braggers . People who say " I'm better than Primark " bore off
