Shop bought sandwiches

Went out with a colleague to grab lunch today - ended up in Tesco where she got a cheese sandwich - and it kinda baffles me because I don’t understand why you’d spend so much on a shop-bought sandwich you could’ve made at home for cheaper - surely you want something a bit more exciting than what you’d make at home if you’re going pay that much or is it just me?

It's easy.
I rarely eat a sandwich but when I do it's shop brought as I can't stand making sandwiches.. Yes I know I'm. BU. But irs one of my hates.

SarahJessicaParker3 · 26/01/2022 17:10

I used to love a shop bought sandwich! Think I lived off them for my first year at university. I don't buy them now. The bread goes dry and they never have enough filling. Harrumph!

Hoppinggreen · 26/01/2022 17:11

Did she have the ingredients at home?
Did she know she would want a sandwich in advance?
Did she fancy a shop bought Sandwich?

Newgirls · 26/01/2022 17:11

And the packaging…

Emergencies yep I get it but every day 🤷‍♀️

KaptainKaveman · 26/01/2022 17:12

shop bought sandwiches are crammed full of salt and chemicals. They are disgusting.

dorkfink · 26/01/2022 17:13

I love Pret or does that not count

dorkfink · 26/01/2022 17:13

tbh i like M&S sarnies too. I like the variety of having differing filings every day

sadpapercourtesan · 26/01/2022 17:14

Shop-bought sandwiches are almost universally disappointing. The decline started with the fashion for omitting butter, and has gone from bad to worse with cheap, nasty cheese/meat even in quite expensive sandwiches from posher shops. It's been years since I had a really decent shop-bought sarnie.

I avoid pre-prepared sandwiches as much as possible because they're usually sold from fridges which are too cold which affects the bread.

I'd usually get one from a sandwich shop where they make them to order as the bread will have been at ambient temperature.

Or of course, if I know I'm going to need a sandwich, I'll just make my own and take it with me.

A basic cheese one is not, it has bread, possibly marg, and cheese.
gogohm · 26/01/2022 17:16

I agree but I still buy them for convenience, always buy interesting fillings though

MorrisZapp · 26/01/2022 17:16

If you want to eat cheese sandwiches every day for a week, it's cheaper to buy a loaf and a block of cheese.

If you fancy a chicken salad sandwich today and who knows what tomorrow, the pre bought will be cheaper and less wasteful. Plus you don't risk accidentally inhaling it at 9.30 am.

PiesNotGuys · 26/01/2022 17:17

Presumably by the time she was in hungry for lunch in Tesco it was a bit late to rewind her life, go to the shops to buy a loaf of bread (which is far more than needed) a block of butter and a block of cheese (again far more than needed), go home, make the sandwich, find some tupper ware to put it in and leave it getting crusty in her handbag for the whole morning?

Newgirls · 26/01/2022 17:17

They are also crazy for the environment - they get made in cold factories, transported, kept in fridge units and then the packaging goes in landfill/incineration. It’s only Brits that buy so many of them

Wendybyrdesmissingconscience · 26/01/2022 17:17

I never eat shop bought sandwiches, on the basis that you wouldn’t make a sandwich at home, wrap it up and eat it a couple of days later.

MilduraS · 26/01/2022 17:21

I love an egg mayo and cress sandwich from M&S. I've made them at home occasionally but they never taste as good.

gettingolderandgrumpy · 26/01/2022 17:23

Ok for emergencies but I’ve always found shop bought sandwiches are a bit disappointing. My homemade taste much better but it’s convenience for shop bought .

Heartbeats0708 · 26/01/2022 17:24

I thought the OP was more wondering why the colleague didn't pick something a bit more exciting than a cheese sandwich if she was bothering to buy one?

AndWhatNext · 26/01/2022 17:26

I love a shop bought cheese and onion sandwich.

dorkfink · 26/01/2022 17:29

ooh yes a deli that makes a fresh sandwich to order is the best.

I recently had some from an old school shop in Yorkshire, creamy egg mayo. 😋

joannadoe · 26/01/2022 17:32

I never buy sliced bread because as soon as I open it, it goes stale. I can't stand stale sandwiches so when I do feel like one which is rare, I buy a fresh shop bought but I agree, she could have chosen something more adventurous.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 26/01/2022 17:33

Now I want an egg mayo sandwich…..

betwixtlives · 26/01/2022 17:37

People do things differently to you. The horror

FuggyPidding · 26/01/2022 17:38

I agree with you OP.
The amount of money people spend on lunches blows my mind a bit to be honest. Like a colleague will go out and grab a sandwich, bag of crisps or chocolate bar and a coffee which is about £5 - every day! That's £100 a month on lunches - lunches that aren't even that nice and lunches that could easily be brought in from home.
I'm one of those saddos (I'm sure that's what some people see me as) who brings in a packed lunch - it's loads cheaper, fresher and I know exactly what I'm eating (not always the case with pre packaged stuff).
As a one off or an emergency, fine. Every day, I don't see the need.
And that's not even mentioning the environmental impact...

lemontingle · 26/01/2022 17:38

For a start supermarket bread made using the Chorleywood process is a disgusting abomination.
Then it's made into a sandwich full of over salted fillings. And then it's sealed in a fucking single use plastic jockstrap.

And even worse it's refrigerated.
So you are eating a cold bread sandwich. Who the hell eats fridge temperature bread?

I've lived in Europe and thankfully they don't do this embarrassing nonsense
