Shop bought sandwiches

Went out with a colleague to grab lunch today - ended up in Tesco where she got a cheese sandwich - and it kinda baffles me because I don’t understand why you’d spend so much on a shop-bought sandwich you could’ve made at home for cheaper - surely you want something a bit more exciting than what you’d make at home if you’re going pay that much or is it just me?

I don’t prefer a shop bought sandwich but I’m time poor and lazy and often buy lunch out

sociallydistained · 26/01/2022 18:26

I am such a sucker for sandwiches! I like ALL sandwiches I think they're my favourite thing 🙈 so if I find myself out around lunchtime without a pre-prepared sandwich I do cave and buy one. Also the one you make in the morning or night before just doesn't compare. I love a good prawn sandwich from M&S for example.

sadpapercourtesan · 26/01/2022 18:26

Oh a freshly made sandwich from a decent cafe or deli is different. I thought we were only talking about the forlorn triangles in plastic.

There is still a disturbing prevalence of no-fucking-butter, though. Unacceptable. A sandwich without butter isn't a sandwich, it's a loose, incomplete compilation of sandwich components.

I never eat shop bought sandwiches, on the basis that you wouldn’t make a sandwich at home, wrap it up and eat it a couple of days later.
I would 😂 leftover party sandwiches? Yes please!

@FuggyPidding

They say because they can't be bothered to make their own lunch each morning... So laziness I guess 🤷‍♀️
Then equally you're lazy for not making your own bread and cheese or growing your own onions.

Dishwasher instead of washing by hand. Using the washing machine instead of hand washing everything etc etc etc.

MajorCarolDanvers · 26/01/2022 18:28

Refrigerated bread is rank - I only buy shop bought if they are freshly made in front of me. Then I don't mind paying for it.

KohlaParasaurus · 26/01/2022 18:28

I'd also be inclined to choose something a bit unusual if I bought a supermarket sandwich, and also inclined to go out and buy a Meal Deal on work days rather than toting Tupperware to work and risking the temptation not to leave my desk all day.

Georgeskitchen · 26/01/2022 18:28

Supermarket sandwiches a massive no-no for me.
You just don't know how long ago they were made.
Buy Greggs which are admittedly more expensive but they are freshly made every day

Maybe it was the only one left that she fancied/wasn’t allergic to/didn’t have diet restrictions around.

@KaptainKaveman

shop bought sandwiches are crammed full of salt and chemicals. They are disgusting.
Everything is chemicals...

I agree with you OP. The amount of money people spend on lunches blows my mind a bit to be honest. Like a colleague will go out and grab a sandwich, bag of crisps or chocolate bar and a coffee which is about £5 - every day! That's £100 a month on lunches - lunches that aren't even that nice and lunches that could easily be brought in from home. I'm one of those saddos (I'm sure that's what some people see me as) who brings in a packed lunch - it's loads cheaper, fresher and I know exactly what I'm eating (not always the case with pre packaged stuff). As a one off or an emergency, fine. Every day, I don't see the need. And that's not even mentioning the environmental impact...
Well if that is what they are having it would probably be a meal deal so quite a bit less than that. The reality is some people prefer the choice that prepacked gives them rather than having a loaf that is fresh getting drier by the end of the week and the same filling each day.

Each to their own though. What harm is it doing to you or anyone else what someone else has for lunch?

This! I used to know someone who made a set of cheese or ham sandwiches each week and put them in the freezer. Each morning he'd take a sandwich out the freezer and it would be ready to eat by lunchtime
SquirrelG · 26/01/2022 18:37

If I buy something to eat when I'm out I buy what I fancy eating at the time - the fact that I could make the same thing at home has nothing to do with it, I'm not at home with the ingredients to hand.

Baystard · 26/01/2022 18:38

@WorriedGiraffe the marg is the chemicals Envy (not envy)

Flidina · 26/01/2022 18:44

Would never eat a shop bought sandwich a after a nasty food poisoning Incident, Involving an egg mayo sarnie, never again. Just the thought of one makes me break out in a cold sweat!

Christmas1988 · 26/01/2022 18:45

How come egg and cress shop bought sandwiches don’t stink the place out like homemade ones? 🤔I love a M&S egg and cress

maddiemookins16mum · 26/01/2022 18:45

I have a weekly ‘treat’, a chicken/bacon sandwich from the Coop every Friday.
But yes, the rest of the time I make butties for me and DH - totals about £6 a week for the both of us and I cheat and buy sliced cheddar cheese for his.

saltandpepper234 · 26/01/2022 18:46

I agree with you OP. It always baffles me that there are those options called “simply ham” or “just cheese”, not even a little bit of salad. I don’t understand who is paying £2.50 for that when you could make 10 for that at home.

Same reason I don’t like to get herbal teas out, they normally just put the same twinings tea bag I have at home in a mug with hot water for more than it would cost for the whole box.

If your paying eating out prices get something you couldn’t usually have 🤷🏼‍♀️

The only thing enticing me back to the office at the moment is the thought of an occasional Pret for lunch.

I find the opposite! Shop-bought egg sandwiches have a sour stink about them that I could never replicate at home. I suspect it's age-related, which says nothing good about ingesting it for lunch Envy
namechangeanonymous · 26/01/2022 18:48

Surely a basic cheese sandwich is about £1 the ones with the 'fancier' fillings about £3? Maybe she's just watching her money until payday.

One opened up near me, so I could get delivery throughout the pandemic. Helped me cope!

themerrywifeofwindsor · 26/01/2022 18:50

YANBU, if I want a bog standard ham and cheese sandwich I'd make one at home and take it with me. If I'm paying for it I want something I wouldn't make at home.

Beniceandyoullbehappy · 26/01/2022 18:53

Slightly off topic but I'm sure I read somewhere once that shop bought sandwiches have a higher than normal risk of giving you food poisoning. That thought always makes me think twice about buying a pre-packaged sandwich, although I do enjoy the occasional M&S sarnie Wink

dementedma · 26/01/2022 18:56

Pet peeve alert....can we all stop fucking grabbing? Grab a coffee, grab a sandwich, grab lunch...
Ill mannered grabby bastards. mumble,mumble,mutter
