Shop bought sandwiches

Went out with a colleague to grab lunch today - ended up in Tesco where she got a cheese sandwich - and it kinda baffles me because I don’t understand why you’d spend so much on a shop-bought sandwich you could’ve made at home for cheaper - surely you want something a bit more exciting than what you’d make at home if you’re going pay that much or is it just me?

@FuggyPidding

I agree with you OP. The amount of money people spend on lunches blows my mind a bit to be honest. Like a colleague will go out and grab a sandwich, bag of crisps or chocolate bar and a coffee which is about £5 - every day! That's £100 a month on lunches - lunches that aren't even that nice and lunches that could easily be brought in from home. I'm one of those saddos (I'm sure that's what some people see me as) who brings in a packed lunch - it's loads cheaper, fresher and I know exactly what I'm eating (not always the case with pre packaged stuff). As a one off or an emergency, fine. Every day, I don't see the need. And that's not even mentioning the environmental impact...
100% this

Well I presume she likes the taste & the ease of them. with regards to money I think it's all relative, someone may think i'm spend a lot on lunch but others may spend more on travel, socialising etc.

If they think they're not even that nice, why do they buy them? Confused

BarbaraofSeville · 26/01/2022 17:41

I find them very disappointing and hate it when I end up having to eat one - I travel around a lot for work and it's usually when I planned to get something nicer but didn't have time to stop at a pub or cafe.

They're not too bad if you can get one of the nicer M&S ones and are able to leave it for a couple of hours to come back up to room temperature, but plain cheese straight out of the fridge is such a disappointment and a waste of an opportunity to eat something nicer.

PlanetNormal · 26/01/2022 17:43

I love supermarket sandwiches, they are one of my favourite little treats. The simpler the better. Particular favourites are M&S prawn, Sainsburys chicken & stuffing and Asda tuna Mayo.

dorkfink · 26/01/2022 17:44

I've lived in Europe and thankfully they don't do this embarrassing nonsense

They certainly do in France

iklboo · 26/01/2022 17:51

I'm not a fan of supermarket sandwiches, except the Tesco really cheap tuna crunch which has probably only had some passing acquaintance with fresh tuna. But it reminds me of childhood so I used get one occasionally when I worked in an actual office.

I like treating myself to a deli sandwich every now & again. Usually with ingredients we don't normally have at home, or would go to waste if we did because only I eat them - and not often. Something like Brie, bacon & cranberry or hot roast beef, onions, mushrooms & mustard mayo.

DiddyHeck · 26/01/2022 17:59

@lemontingle

For a start supermarket bread made using the Chorleywood process is a disgusting abomination. Then it's made into a sandwich full of over salted fillings. And then it's sealed in a fucking single use plastic jockstrap.

And even worse it's refrigerated.
So you are eating a cold bread sandwich. Who the hell eats fridge temperature bread?

There are 44 countries in Europe. Are you saying you can't get a shop bought sandwich in any of them? Hmm

TillyTopper · 26/01/2022 18:00

I buy lunch everyday I'm in the office, which used to be 5 days a week. I like the variety, the fact it's cold not warm and also I can't be arsed to make it before I leave at 6:30am, or the night before when I get home at 7:30pm!

pictish · 26/01/2022 18:02

Maybe she just can’t be bothered? We’re all different. I spend a lot of time on my work lunches, batch cooking meals that look and taste amazing on my measly 15 MINUTE lunch break. Other people do a tin of soup or bring in a Sainsburys sandwich. To each their own.

Blossomtoes · 26/01/2022 18:06

I really want an M&S cheese and celery sandwich now.

Mayblossominapril · 26/01/2022 18:08

I love a shop bought sandwich as a treat. I always pick a filling I wouldn’t make myself.
So I wouldn’t have picked cheese.

ApolloandDaphne · 26/01/2022 18:09

My DH buys a sandwich when he is in the office. He gets up at 5.30am and leaves at 6.00 so sandwich making is the last thing he wants to do and when he is in the office he has nowhere to keep a packed lunch plus sometimes he is in different offices. He has tried taking home made sandwiches but doesn't really like them. He likes to get out the office for a walk and to get a Pret sandwich. His money, his choice!

ClariceQuiff · 26/01/2022 18:10

It's that little excitement - what shall I choose today - rather than having whatever is in your fridge.

Having said that I'm glad I WFH now so can cook simple things such as an omelette for lunch.

FuggyPidding · 26/01/2022 18:13

They say because they can't be bothered to make their own lunch each morning... So laziness I guess 🤷‍♀️

FuggyPidding · 26/01/2022 18:15

Sorry, that was in response to DiddyHeck

SweetPetrichor · 26/01/2022 18:15

@KaptainKaveman

shop bought sandwiches are crammed full of salt and chemicals. They are disgusting.
So is your home sandwich…salts and chemicals are base components of most food.

The more complex the sandwich, the greater the potential for it to get screwed up. Tesco’s idea of an exciting sandwich could, in practice, be a soggy disappointment, but a cheese sandwich is hard to screw up; same for ham/tuna/egg etc. I’d rather have that than Korean Fried Chicken/Vegan Pastrami or whatever else the flavour of the month is.

In terms of expense, a Tesco meal deal is £3, hardly expensive. Perhaps she’s happy to pay that to not have to faff around with a packed lunch every day?

dorkfink · 26/01/2022 18:22

I'm not sure it's laziness, maybe they just have better things to do with their time in the mornings

blyn72 · 26/01/2022 18:23

I think shop bought sandwiches are lovely. I often have a cheese ploughman's, blt or egg mayonnaise.

Dacquoise · 26/01/2022 18:23

A freshly made sandwich from a cafe is my idea of heaven. Had the perfect egg and cress sandwich in a cafe in Dorchester recently. Same sandwich from a chiller cabinet, yuk, just yuk.

Spectre8 · 26/01/2022 18:24

Does she live alone? If she does like me, there is no way I am buying a loaf of bread and cheese when I'm only making one sandwich and then have to think of how I am going to finish off the rest in the week. I don't eat lots of bread, I'd have to eat it everyday to get through a loaf! Same with cheese.

Not like you can buy just two slices of cheese easily and if yuo do its often cheaper to buy a block.

Buying a meal deal is just cheaper.

StCharlotte · 26/01/2022 18:26

I occasionally treat myself to a Waitrose chicken & mayo @ £1.40. Sometimes need a break from the usual home made cheese sarnie. So sue me.
