Shop bought sandwiches

Went out with a colleague to grab lunch today - ended up in Tesco where she got a cheese sandwich - and it kinda baffles me because I don’t understand why you’d spend so much on a shop-bought sandwich you could’ve made at home for cheaper - surely you want something a bit more exciting than what you’d make at home if you’re going pay that much or is it just me?

I thought that was bagged salad

MangosteenSoda · 26/01/2022 18:58

Somewhat parallel to the topic, but sandwiches fucking depress me. Once in a blue moon if it’s in a baguette (ideally a bahn mi), but as an almost daily lunch I just bloody HATE them.

This is bad news for me because I’m lazy at organising my own lunch in advance and I like nipping out to get something. I used to live in Asia where there were loads of interesting, cheap choices. Here it’s an explosion of mediocre sandwich. Gahhh.

I feel better having got that off my chest Grin

@KaptainKaveman

shop bought sandwiches are crammed full of salt and chemicals. They are disgusting.
M and S Best Ever (or whatever it's called) prawn cocktail sandwich is amazing. No idea if it's crammed with chemicals. It tastes delicious.

I had the worst food poisoning from a well known high street food chain about 15 years ago ....... courtesy of a chicken salad sandwich. I've never eaten one since, and have been vegetarian since that day too!

They're days old, dry, and have the cheapest ingredients in. No ta.

knittingaddict · 26/01/2022 19:01

@edwinbear

The only thing enticing me back to the office at the moment is the thought of an occasional Pret for lunch.
Oh yes, their crayfish tails sandwich is amazing too.
Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 26/01/2022 19:07

I'm lucky to teach in a school with genuinely nice cooked lunches. It costs £1.72 per day for two courses plus freshly baked bread, salad and fruit. I sit with my year R class which is off putting to start with but I'm used to it now 🙃

M&S sandwiches and pre packed salads are nice, if overpriced. Occasionally I'll get one if I go to the gym at 6am as it's next door.

educatingrati · 26/01/2022 19:07

If I'm working away from home my packed lunch sandwiches always go soggyEnvy

100problems · 26/01/2022 19:08

Is it possible that was what she fancied? Out there I know.

thickthighs73 · 26/01/2022 19:08

Convenience and gets you away from desk/office for a while

I love a soggy sandwich 😂

worriedatthemoment · 26/01/2022 19:30

There choice i often bought a sandwich at work because i couldn't always be arsed to make one , leave it behind , or run out of stuff

SnowWhitesSM · 26/01/2022 19:30

Sainsburys did a whipped feta with red onion and beetroot sandwich in the summer. I know I could have made it but who really wants to waste time whipping feta and shredding beetroot. It was such a nice sandwich that I still think about it now Grin

worriedatthemoment · 26/01/2022 19:31

@lemontingle ive seen ready made sandwiches and bought them in europe

littlemissbananasplit · 26/01/2022 19:43

Personally I believe that anyone is entitled to purchase (or make) a lunch of their choosing without being subjected to judgement. As for the price its not like she took you to M&S, are you not yet acquainted with the joys of the Tesco £3 meal deal? Ostensibly she is partial to a cheese sandwhich - aren't we all? (with the exception of our vegan and dairy-free friends of course). What concerns me most is that this woman is supposedly your 'friend', yet you've taken the time out of your extremely busy schedule to dedicate an entire post absolutely rinsing the shit out of her sandwhich choices lmao.

user1471443411 · 26/01/2022 19:50

I know what you mean about cheese but shop bought sandwiches are for when you are out and about and haven't planned in advance - your friend might not like mayo and weird salad toppings so has gone for the plain option.
Morrisons are the best for shop bought sandwiches as they taste more homemade style. I can see the point of going to sandwich shops and getting freshly made cobs with different fillings as you can have many different choices than you'd have lying around at home.

I think it's the salt and chemicals which sets it apart from a home made one! I love a shop bought sandwich now and again.
TheOrigRights · 26/01/2022 20:00

I've worked from home for years. When I go out at lunch time to run errands (about once a month) I will probably buy lunch from a shop just because it's a change.

Hoorah for me.

A580Hojas · 26/01/2022 20:00

What did you get for your lunch OP?

Luredbyapomegranate · 26/01/2022 20:01

Well it might sound strange but.. people are different OP

Bloody Americanisms Grin

Although bite to eat is UK born and bred, I think

summerlovin12 · 26/01/2022 20:23

As someone who used to work in a sandwich factory, I would generally go for homemade....
