Am I the only one that has just clocked this

that front numberplate on most cars are white, and the one at the back is yellow.
Just bought a car and thought perhaps the dealer had made a mistake until I noticed that all cars had this!
Am I the only one who has only just noticed this.

When I was in the motor trade the parts department used to wind up the apprentices/new salesmen by drilling the holes incorrectly to fit the yellow plates to the front and the white to the back of cars before a customer delivery. On average none out of ten spotted the error…(obviously corrected before a customer drive away…)

I haven't seen an arrow near the petrol gauge, I must look, though it did take me a while to figure out that the other little arrow that sometimes pop up on the dashboard means I should change gear.

Fluffymule · 24/01/2022 22:38

This is like someone claiming they have just realised there are actually three coloured lights used on traffic lights.

Not just red and green, but amber too!

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 24/01/2022 22:40

@whatwouldsueheckdo

This thread is actually scary.
I work for a garage. Nothing shocks me now

Another tip
You don't get any grace on the MOT due date. If you go on the gov website you can check the date and sign up for a reminder

bumblingbovine49 · 24/01/2022 22:41

I've been driving for 40 years and I didn't know this Blush

tearinghairout · 24/01/2022 22:41

I'm sure I saw red number plates. It was on some old banger. Maybe they are for off-road vehicles, or something. A google says it means driven by the President of India, but I don't think that applies here Grin

itrytomakemyway · 24/01/2022 22:43

bloody hell. I really don't think some people are safe to be on the roads.

Omicrone · 24/01/2022 22:44

Sorry, but I just don't believe that people have never noticed this.

MumWithYOPD · 24/01/2022 22:45

At what age is this discovery being made?

SingingWaffleDoggy · 24/01/2022 22:45

Blush it’s kind of obvious now I know

LittleBearPad · 24/01/2022 22:45

Based on some of the comments above - I agree!!
ZeroFuchsGiven · 24/01/2022 22:45

I cant believe how many of you are admitting to being thick as shit tbh

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2022 22:45

@noblegiraffe

They’re not different colours, it’s just the wavelength shifts depending on whether they are travelling towards you or away from you.

The shade of the reg plate is how speed cameras tell how fast you are going.

Not quite...but if they look blue coming towards you or red going away you can definitely get them done for speeding. Grin
User764832 · 24/01/2022 22:45

We had a J reg car years ago and that had black plates I think
Red numbers on a plate I'm sure are trade, so red plates maybe trade as well

bumblingbovine49 · 24/01/2022 22:46

@itrytomakemyway

Ok, so this is a joke right? There is no way that anyone who drives cannot have noticed that the numberplates of the cars driving in the same direction in front of them are yellow and the ones driving towards them in the opposite directionare white?

It is impossible not to have noticed this.

This must be some sort of internet meme or windup that I have missed?

I just don't take any notice of the colour of reg plate. I can tel if a car is facing towards me or away from me by other means and I can read the plate, I just never thought about the colour of a reg plate before
SingingWaffleDoggy · 24/01/2022 22:47

Blush it’s obvious now I know

Silversprinkles · 24/01/2022 22:47

@Santahasjoinedww

I always thought it was so in an accident emergency services knew which way the car was facing... Not sure why they would need to know though! Grin

Umm wouldn't the engine bonnet, steering wheel and chairs also let them know which way it was going? Confused

Sheabutterisdelish · 24/01/2022 22:48

FelicityFlops

This is weird and must only be in the UK for newer cars.

You're having a laugh aren't you? Newer cars?? Like 50 years or so.....Seriously how on earth can people not notice this stuff. When you're sitting in traffic etc? I mean just how.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 24/01/2022 22:48

This will blow your mind. Electric car number plates gave a green strip Shock

Ugzbugz · 24/01/2022 22:49

Uh oh...I am 40 something and have never noticed Blush

Motherhubbardscupboard · 24/01/2022 22:49

I think if people are this unobservant it explains a lot in life

sanityisamyth · 24/01/2022 22:50

My 8 year old knows this, and has done for several years ...

User764832 · 24/01/2022 22:51

It's because it's illegal to show a white light at the rear at night

PurplePansy05 · 24/01/2022 22:52

I knew this but solidarity with you, OP, this is definitely the type of thing I'd randomly come up with Wink

MumWithYOPD · 24/01/2022 22:52

Cars registered before 1980 can have black plates any cars registered after 1980 displaying black plates are not legal
