that front numberplate on most cars are white, and the one at the back is yellow.
Just bought a car and thought perhaps the dealer had made a mistake until I noticed that all cars had this!
Am I the only one who has only just noticed this.

OP posts:
Whoknowsweknows · 24/01/2022 23:22

Oh Lordy, and you lot are actually qualified drivers?! ShockGrin

User1isnotavailable · 24/01/2022 23:23

Oh dear!

megletthesecond · 24/01/2022 23:26

I've asked my 15yr old. He said the front is white and the back is yellow.

He's not old enough to be studying for his theory and he's not car mad at all, and even he knows.

ToooOldForThis · 24/01/2022 23:26

Never knew! But tbf I don't know my own registration number! Absolutely not a wind up, to whoever said it was.
I also can't really differentiate between similar cars, eg 2 colleagues have big white cars, I see them every day but couldn't say whose is whose. Just have zero interest in cars!

GiantKitten · 24/01/2022 23:29

@tearinghairout

I'm sure I saw red number plates. It was on some old banger. Maybe they are for off-road vehicles, or something. A google says it means driven by the President of India, but I don't think that applies here Grin
Haven’t RTFT so someone else may have answered but I’m fairly sure that Irish (or NI???) used to have red plates at the back.
Reallycantbesarsed · 24/01/2022 23:30

I am with you OP have never noticed…cars just don’t interest me enough to even think about number plates !

VanGoghsDog · 24/01/2022 23:31

@DryWhiteagainW

Did you know about the arrow next to the petrol pump sign on your dashboard? It tells you which side of your car the petrol cap’s on. This was a game changer for me.......although I still check every time I have to fill up Grin
It's not on every car though, that's the difference. My car doesn't have it.

The yellow and white number plates are law, I'm not sure how people could have missed this but I'm also not sure how I knew it, it just something you know!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/01/2022 23:32

How do these people manage to pass their driving tests? Surely observation skills is the most important part?

EarringsandLipstick · 24/01/2022 23:33

@Staragain

I’m Irish and I knew that! We played Yellow Reg no digs as kids. When you saw a yellow reg (rare enough in 80s Ireland, you could box your sibling and they couldn’t retaliate). We still play it if we’re ever in a car with together.
Was about to post this too - I can't believe people didn't know this. I'm Irish & know (we don't have yellow number plates)

The family over the road from me have five cars and they talk to me as if I should know which is which ("oh, was it James' car parked opposite you the other day?" "Was it the xxx blah car name that was on the drive" etc). I can't even tell their three sons apart, I've got no hope with the cars!

I would say 50% of the people I speak to can't top up windscreen wash and make it 70% if it's coolant. Also can't drive without sat nav or reversing cameras
ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2022 23:35

I think it's probably like that test where people have to concentrate on some aspect of a basketball game and don't notice the person in a gorilla suit wandering around the court. Except for an analogy with driving, the test would be that you knew something unexpected might happen and it was really important you notice that as well as the number of goals or passes or whatever.

And then having done that, counted the goals and seen the gorilla too... you're asked what colour socks each team was wearing. Grin

Flavabobble · 24/01/2022 23:36

This is a baffling thread - all the “Oooh I don’t care about cars, I’ve been driving for years” it’s pretty basic observation, don’t any of you give a cursory check around your car before you get in and drive that ton of metal around the streets?

As for the “I’ll have to check to see if mine are like that”…

Longdistance · 24/01/2022 23:37

Erm…should you even be driving?

GiantKitten · 24/01/2022 23:39

@tearinghairout

Found one! It was Ireland, but was optional (from 1969-1987)

If that's blown your mind, just wait till you find out about the pope's religion and where bears shit.

TonytheDog · 24/01/2022 23:44

Unfucking believable.
There's no pride in not knowing this, it's not even funny.

Getupoffthesofa · 24/01/2022 23:44

I absolutely had never noticed. I sometimes see yellow plates and think that must be foreign.
I have ADHD though…

Dutch cars have yellow plates at the front. The letters are a different layout to ours though so they look foreign anyway.

@PastMyBestBeforeDate

Well this thread has done wonders for the cause of women drivers.
Hasn't it just?!! I'm embarrassed for them 🤦‍♀️
joannadoe · 24/01/2022 23:52

I always thought some how when you are driving with your beams on at night a white number plate at the back would reflect more to the driver behind Confused

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/01/2022 23:54

@Senga67

I've been driving for over 30 years and I have never noticed this.😲 I can't wait to go out in the morning to have a look at my car to check if it's true.
SAME

I walk around in my own world, but I have just impressed myself here😆

joannadoe · 24/01/2022 23:55

Also countries like the Netherlands are both yellow front and back and I notice immediately when its a foreign car when driving around. I can't believe how some of you haven't noticed this Grin

jamandmarmaladethesecondcoming · 24/01/2022 23:55

Just as long as you are absolutely clear on what the middle pedal is for...?
