North west thread

YouHaveMail · 17/01/2022 23:22

Noting there is a thread for the east side, I thought a north west thread was needed.

--Also I am very bored at the moment waiting for dc to fall asleep, and this felt like the perfect way to spend the time.

Any other NW mumsnetters here? Let's talk schools, food, leisure....and so on Grin

@Wineandchoccy

Hello North Westers I’m 5 mins away from Booths and used to work there when I was a student Grin I’m East Lancs where there is a tiny castle Smile
We were there yesterday 👍

Hello, ex-NWesterner joining.

It's muffin or teacake if it's bread.
It's a bun if it's a small cake with icing or also if slightly larger with frosting.
Vimto is my kids favourite now!

I'm in the home counties with husband and kids now, after time in London, but a Rammy girl originally. (Ramsbottom!) Anyone else??

And it's probably middle aged hormones, but I miss the NW loads recently. My parents moved to Yorkshire a few years ago so I don't visit any more, and I really miss it.

BeQuietBrenda · 24/01/2022 21:01

Hello North Westerners!

I'm originally from Warrington but now live near Horwich.

I call it a barm or barm cake.

It's definitely a ginnel.

Nearest Booths, I've learned from this thread, is in Chorley! I always giggle to myself when people (ie some of my Southern family) try to use Waitrose as a way of showing how terribly well to-do they are. Darling, Waitrose is to Booths what Iceland is to Waitrose 😂 Us Northerners just ooze class dontchaknow! 😉 (I shop at a Iceland and Aldi, for the record!)

EllaDisenchanted · 24/01/2022 21:03

Hiya! I was born in Salford and live in Prestwich. Used to spend every Sunday morning in town.
Teacakes have raisins but we had buns not barms.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 24/01/2022 21:07

Ooh, Fluffy does that mean on a clear day you'll be able to wave to me? 😂 I wonder what the wind will be like that high up...?

NoWordForFluffy · 24/01/2022 21:11

If I was so inclined mad enough to go up such a tower, I'd be able to wave at my family, let alone you, Puss! 🤣🤣

As for the wind? Stiff!

Tillymintpolo · 24/01/2022 21:13

@BeQuietBrenda I’ll wave to you from my side of Rivington pike

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 24/01/2022 21:17

Bracing, like Skegness? 😂
It looks like a cheap version of the Empire State building. Not sure it'll get thru planning. Surely the immediate neighbours will object massively. It's so out of place.

PaperMonster · 24/01/2022 21:18

@Wineandchoccy assuming you can see a bloomin big hill from said castle, I’m just down the road from you!

BeQuietBrenda · 24/01/2022 21:19

Oh, a neighbour! Hi!

NoWordForFluffy · 24/01/2022 21:20

There is no way Sefton Council will approve that thing!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/01/2022 21:27

Good Lord...I've just had a Google for the proposed 'tower' you're discussing. ConfusedShock

Well, the view could be spectacular on a clear day. A few weeks ago we were walking on the coast just south of Southport and could see mountains of Wales and the Lake District. Pedantically, the latter would prevent being able to see all of the NWGrin

Redcrayons · 24/01/2022 21:30

@Itsmeandhim

Our nearest Booths is Knutsford. Which is a good 20 minute drive. We are in the poor part of Cheshire. No Cheshire housewives around here. We have good shopping in that we can get to Cheshire oaks, Chester and even the Trafford centre within 30 minutes.
Also in the not-leafy part of Cheshire. No Booths round these parts. We’ve got two Aldi’s and a Lidl just up the road.
joydivisionovengloves71 · 24/01/2022 21:32

@NoWordForFluffy

Ha, *@joydivisionovengloves71*, that tower must be a joke! 🤣🤣 Are you on the SUFS Facebook page? Somebody got in before me to ask if it was 1st April!
Yes I'm on that. Only been here two years moved from Liverpool and love it here 😄
Redcrayons · 24/01/2022 21:33

Just googled. That tower is hilarious, surely they aren’t serious.

I can't work out if it's a joke or not 🤔
gladyoucame · 24/01/2022 21:41

I'm also in the Lancashire market town with a Booths and a M&S, famous for its cakes (not quite as famous as Eccles). Also partial to a trip to Waitrose at Walton le Dale we're spoilt for posh food shops!
I'm originally from Kent (although up north for over 20 years now) so ginnel really confused me for a while. Where I'm from it's rolls and bap's, but barm, barm cake, tea cakes, muffins and bin lids confused me when travelling around the northwest looking for a sandwich at lunchtime!
Worked in Wigan/Skem, then Oldham and now Blackburn so heard loads of different terms for bread and other random accents which are difficult for 'southerners' to pick up on! Love it up here now and wouldn't want to go back.

Chorley 😊
HoppyHop · 24/01/2022 22:20

@Imissmoominmama

Those narrow passages are called weinds in my town. We have barms here too.
I think I know where you are. Do you have an annual Children's Festival?
Imissmoominmama · 24/01/2022 22:45

@HoppyHop- we do!

Figmentofimagination · 24/01/2022 22:58

@thismeansnothing - is that light ash farm in myerscough? I've wanted to go there as my friend raved about it. They do a Yorkshire pudding wrap that looks lovely.
