Anyone tried the McDonald's McPlant?

Legodout · 11/01/2022 16:14

Interested in anyone's views before I try at the weekend! I am a big fan of fake-meat burgers (the only category of fake meat I think is indistinguishable from/superior to the original) and usually have Linda McCartney's or Co-Ops own brand, so looking forward to trying this!

On a side note, anyone have a good fake-meat sausage recommendations? None I've tried have hit the mark.

Thanks!

Dd refused to eat it because they wouldn't substitute the fake cheese for proper cheese. It seems ridiculous they only have vegan now not vegetarian

Mabelface · 11/01/2022 16:43

Watch out with burger King because they use the same grills as the meat!

FireworkParrot · 11/01/2022 16:43

That's interesting OP, I'm a meat eater but trying to dramatically cut down my meat consumption and I'd say the fake meat burgers are the one thing I really don't like, I'd rather have a bean burger they're usually way nicer. Perhaps I'll give it a go though.

Best vegetarian sausages are the Richmond ones by miles.

I also really like the Quorn chicken nuggets, they're indistinguishable from actual chicken nuggets IMO.

@NeverDropYourMoonCup you thought a fake meat burger sold in McDonalds might have been a healthy option?

Well I’m always willing to be surprised by people!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 11/01/2022 16:43

@BlueFlavour

I don’t care how processed it is. I would a thousand times rather eat processed crap than a dead animal. Who probably had a shit life. It’s delicious *@Legodout*, hope you enjoy it.
Unfortunately, the dead animal doesn't make me ill, whereas the ingredients list of the not dead animal make it clear that it would.
MouseyMoose · 11/01/2022 16:44

@Chesneyhawkes1

I was going to try it but now I've seen the list of processed crap I won't.

I'll stick to my beef burger if I'm eating in there

If you don't want processed food I would suggest avoiding all fake meat alternatives, as you can imagine to get something that isn't meat to taste and feel like it, it will take quite a lot of processing.
ShowOfHands · 11/01/2022 16:44

I had one a couple of months ago following a protracted time in A&E and nothing open for food (and a looong drive home). It was okay. A decent burger was something I loved when I ate meat so know what they should taste like and it wasn't stunning or delicious IME but it was surprisingly okay. Bits sloppy to eat and nothing close to the BK take on a plant based burger but it's a pretty good effort.

Stiffcondomhat · 11/01/2022 16:45

I'd be amazed if someone didn't know how processed a McDonald's was.

Many people see Vegan and automatically (wrongly) think healthy. They will feel virtuous eating this junk food. Do you think mcds are doing this because they care about the planet?

BIWI · 11/01/2022 16:46

What I really take issue with - and the reason I posted the ingredients list - is people who think that vegan food, or plant-based as it's now being called, is somehow healthier or better for you than meat-based alternatives.

I completely understand the arguments for wanting to either reduce or cut out meat/fish/eggs - but so many people seem to assume that these new products are healthier in some way because they're vegan.

And as an ex-market researcher, who spent many years going shopping with consumers, I can tell you that virtually nobody ever looks at the back of pack for the list of ingredients. (The general exception being people who are looking at the calorie count, or people who have some kind of allergy).

ChildrenGrowingUpTooFast · 11/01/2022 16:48

DH got one and I tasted it. It's disgusting. Mushy and salty. But I haven't had any fake meat product I like. I much prefer the old style veggie patties with beans and peas and potatoes.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/01/2022 16:48

@MouseyMoose yes I tried veganism for a few months and my diet was shockingly unhealthy.

I think years ago when people couldn't get all this fake meat stuff it was probably a really healthy diet. But now it's easy to be a very unhealthy vegan especially if like me, cooking isn't your thing.

SpeckledlyHen · 11/01/2022 16:49

@BIWI

OK - to make the point further - here are the ingredients for an equivalent quarterpounder beef patty:

Quarter Beef Patty
100% Pure Beef.
No additives, fillers, binders, preservatives or flavour enhancers. Just pure forequarter and flank. A little salt and pepper is added to season after cooking.

If you want to be vegan, it's your prerogative, obviously. But I wonder how many people realise just how processed these foods are?

Really confused as to why you would even reply to a thread titled Mcdonalds McPlant if you are so against processed "crap" - just being goady? or is there another reason. Hmm

Every vegan I know understands processed vs non processed and healthy vs unhealthy.

And every vegan I know bases their decision making process from the starting point of "doesn't contain animals products".

I am at a loss as to why there is an expectation that not eating animal products is synonymous with healthy eating 🤔

There are health freak vegans and junk food vegans and all shades in between.

My dd is over the moon about Mcplant burger!

ShowOfHands · 11/01/2022 16:51

I'm veggie, sometimes vegan and for health reasons and my diet is really good. I almost never eat fake meat products though.

My mate is vegan for ethical reasons and her diet is appalling.

There probably is a discussion to be had about the wider perception of plant based diets. Why not start a thread BIWI?

But a huge amount of those ingredients you listed were from the sauces, the bun and even the individual salad items. The beef burger will contain all that too

No, not being goady @SpeckledlyHen. Providing information as well as adding my point of view to the thread.

LublinToDublin · 11/01/2022 16:52

But incase you are worried about us @BIWI tea is a made from scratch lentil and vegetable casserole Wink

Dozycuntlaters · 11/01/2022 16:52

No idea about the Macdonalds thing but re veggie sausages - the nicest ones I've tried are Cauldron Linconshire Sausages - they are really nice, not all dry and yuck like the Linda McCartney ones.

Nothing wrong with this one.
NightmareSlashDelightful · 11/01/2022 16:53

I'm no vegan but Leon's plant burger I think it's called the Love Burger or something is extremely tasty. Although it does actually have more fat and sugar in it than a standard Big Mac. As an occasional thing it hardly matters, I guess.

I am going to stand alongside BIWI though -- while this is a thread about fast food and clearly no one thinks that anything from a fast food brand is in any way healthy, I do think more broadly a lot of people are getting plant-washed by big processed food brands and slightly conned into thinking that buying highly processed vegan burgers, sausages etc is 'healthy'. Processed food is processed food, whether it's made from plants or animals or bits of sawdust scrapings.

Nutrients are better extracted from foods the less fucked-about with they are -- that goes for carrots as much as it does for cattle.

Mangowood · 11/01/2022 16:53

DH veggie for 30yrs said it was really nice and like the old quorn burgers. He prefers the quorn frozen sausages, I like the Richmonds ones better but I eat meat as well.

When it’s beef, the cow does most of the processing of the plant based ingredients.

Great. I'm looking forward to joining your next Bootcamp just to tell you all about the joys and importance of simple carbs.

But no one asked an opinion on whether it was "healthy" and what is contained? Your opinion was not asked for. The thread was "has anyone tried one" - answers then followed with yes or no and the opinion on taste and suggestions for other veggie products. You barrel in completely left field with your opinion which has nothing to do with the thread. Totally bizarre.
