Another Bloody Downing Street party

999 replies

JustJam4Tea · 10/01/2022 21:51

So hours after telling us to only meet one other person outside from a different household 100 invited to Downing Street BYO in the garden.

It was unlawful to mix outside. If my employer had invited 100 staff to a garden party we’d have all been arrested.

@AllThePogs

My father had a major operation in the first lockdown. No I did not visit him at home as he was told that if he recovered he should live another ten years, but that if he got covid then, he would probably die. I was one of the plebs still having to go into work and unsurprisingly did not want to kill my father.
I wouldn't have visited my father in these circumstances either. But apart from being unsteady on his feet my father was as healthy as a horse.
derxa · 11/01/2022 12:24

@AllThePogs

I have read some callous posters on MN, but derxa takes the biscuit. What about the 13 year old who died alone in hospital? Do you think the parents are to blame for that as well?
No the rules were utterly inhumane. It was heart breaking for those parents
AllThePogs · 11/01/2022 12:25

@derxa Fine you broke the law because you deemed it safe to do so.
I didn't because my father was at risk.
But many older people, in particular, are very law-abiding. My in-laws would not allow anyone to break the law and visit them. If it is the law, they stick to it.
I think the government encouraging people to see laws as optional to save their own skin is particularly vile.

NewYearNewKale · 11/01/2022 12:26

@YogaLite

Not read the whole thread but the smirk on Johnson's face in recent clip on BBC when he says he won't comment as the matter is under investigation by Sue Gray, just made me so angry I could have punched him Angry Maybe we should all go on strike and abolish this government Angry
This was my mood on waking this morning.

Agree.

I didn't break the law. My DF died in 2015 so my example was completely hypothetical

Notonthestairs · 11/01/2022 12:30

My in laws and Dad trusted that the Government were a) doing their best and b) trying to protect them.

Fancy trying to blame those same people for following legislation.

BashStreetKid · 11/01/2022 12:32

Honestly, if you chose to stay away rather than visit a relative in need because the govt told you to then you are as bad as Boris and his lies..because you both lack empathy and humanity

Utterly ridiculous thing to say. We stayed away because we didn't want to risk their lives and health. It doesn't mean we ignored them. If you don't understand that, it is you who is totally lacking in empathy and humanity.

merrymouse · 11/01/2022 12:33

The thing you don’t seem to be understanding is how many people had conditions that made them vulnerable, and how many seemingly strong people died anyway. People had to make very difficult decisions unless, apparently, they are Boris Johnson who delegates that kind of thing (children, wallpaper bills, parking tickets - it’s a long list) to the little people.

merrymouse · 11/01/2022 12:34

So much easier to deal with hypothetical problems.

StealthPolarBear · 11/01/2022 12:37

":12ohfourfoxache

Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab was a 13 year old child

He died - alone - in hospital. Probably terrified, probably in pain and undoubtedly suffering

His own parents were not allowed to sit at his deathbed as he passed"
This bears repeating

@Poetrypatty

It's a joke that the PM ordered an investigation into the Downing Street parties but was at this big party. He takes us for fools.
YABU. How on earth is Boris supposed to know which parties, gatherings and other events he happened to pass through at that time, he had only very recently recovered from a very serious illness and it is little surprise that many people needed his inspirational leadership and so wanted to see him in person at parties.

Move on.

Remember Keir Starmer took a knee.

Kendodd · 11/01/2022 12:42

The only thing that surprises me about all these parties is that they had to bring their own booze and it wasn't supplied by the tax payer.

That's true of course. BJ is despicable and should resign may I emphasize. The rules were Draconian but they were seized upon by jobsworths and the media and ramped up to a hysterical level
NewYearNewKale · 11/01/2022 12:42

Yes and what are the chances of getting people to follow any public health infectious disease warning in the future?

NewYearNewKale · 11/01/2022 12:43

I am surprised it was a BYOB. That must have made them think they were real philanthropists.

Sedai · 11/01/2022 12:44

I couldn't give my baby son a proper funeral due to restrictions, a month after the party in May 2020. Bojo can go swivel!

Bouledeneige · 11/01/2022 12:47

The BYOB was clearly cynical. Otherwise the civil servants would have to declare the food and drink they received as taxable benefits.

the80sweregreat · 11/01/2022 12:48

Derxa thinks we were all ' hysterical ' for following the rules that the government told us to follow and people were arrested and fined for breaking those rules too. Many examples of people being told to move away from a park bench. Things locked down tightly under government orders. Shops made to shut , I could go on and on.
Words fail me , but then they did not have to watch a loved one die over FaceTime.

Poetrypatty · 11/01/2022 12:50

Most of the people venting here are responsible for the current government (whether they know it or not)

Confused

I meant that people in offialdom interpreted the rules in a rigid fashion.
DemBonesDemBones · 11/01/2022 12:52

My Grannie died the date this happened. We couldn't be with her. I will never get over it.

the80sweregreat · 11/01/2022 12:53

While she is at it, can Sue Gray tell us on here if Boris Johnson and Carrie were at this party in 2020 ? Why the ' inquiry ' into who was there ?
Why not just ask a few people ? 100 I think were there eating cheese and quaffing wine
Surely one of them saw him there or not ?
It's just farcical.

SerendipityJane · 11/01/2022 12:54

I think the government encouraging people to see laws as optional to save their own skin is particularly vile.

I don't see any signs of that at all. We are all still required to obey the law.

The point they are making is that the law didn't doesn't and never will apply to them. And don't you forget it

jgw1 · 11/01/2022 12:54

@the80sweregreat

It's one long party at number 10 it seems :( How many do they have in more normal times ?
They are so talented that it does not take them long to run the country and enrich their mates so have plenty of time for parties.
