Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

So was just looking at where Morcambe is, whilst watching the shambolic Spurs game. And was surprised to see Carlisle is in England... I would have bet my DH life on it being in Scotland Confused

Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

And there's a Tripoli in the Peloponnese.

NameChange215 · 10/01/2022 01:18

@Redsquirrel5 Torpenhow is pronounced Tre-pen-ah, don't ask me why!

FelicityBeedle · 10/01/2022 01:33

Another one who lives in Carlisle, and never seen anyone make that mistake before, maybe a southern one?
I can’t talk though, I thought Dunkirk was in Scotland until I was about 14. It just sounds it!

Carlisle is a very small city, even has a cathedral! Second smallest in the U.K., second only to Cambridge’s if I recall correctly

God I hate that advert @WhoUsedMyName
There is no pub ‘the castle’ and the bloke sounds like a geordie

WhoUsedMyName · 10/01/2022 02:14

Grinit's annoying when we drive to Scotland from Herts we stop at Carlisle & I say it to dh who is always less than impressed

CrumpledCrumpet · 10/01/2022 02:18

I always think Carlisle just sounds like it should be in Scotland.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/01/2022 02:36

But if I am honest I could hazard a guess at what towns and cities are on which side of the Welsh/English border unless spelled in a very obviously Welsh way.

I know what you mean - no prizes for working out which on side of the border these places obviously are:

Dol-y-Cannau
Llangarron
Llanrothal
Llanveynoe
Llanwarne

Sorry, but I just read that in Alan Partridge's voice and am now giggling Grin

@RampantIvy

I have been to Carlisle and loved it. Then there is the very scenic Settle to Carlisle railway.

Does everyone know where Settle is without looking at a map?

For those of us living within 100 miles of Settle all D of E expeditions involved Settle at either end or as the stop over.

*That train must be taking a pretty weird route. I’ve taken many trains from Edinburgh to London and none have gone through Carlisle.
Edinburgh to London trains follow the east coast. Carlisle is on the west.

It's a scenic route, not a weird one, and is more about getting from Leeds to pretty villages than London to Edinburgh, and then in the summer, well you can do the journey on a steam train, unfortunately this has to be booked as a trip and isn't part of the day to day workings.

immersivereader · 10/01/2022 02:42

Berwick on Tweed ? Must be in Scotland, Tweed is in the name??

immersivereader · 10/01/2022 02:45

The Settle Carlisle train route is world famous, very beautiful

BlueThursday · 10/01/2022 06:33

I knew that but I still maintain pontefract should be in wales

Used to live near Llanwarne and DH is not religious but a big fan of Shane so he reckoned it was the only place he'd be prepared to worship Smile

Isn't St David's in Wales the UK's smallest city @FelicityBeedle?

Michael Portillo was instrumental in saving the Settle Carlisle route @immersivereader.

FanGirlX · 10/01/2022 08:06

St David's is indeed the UK's smallest city.

I think @FelicityBeedle was saying which city had the smallest cathedral though.

@immersivereader

Berwick on Tweed ? Must be in Scotland, Tweed is in the name??
Yes it is north of the tweed No it is not in Scotland

It plays in Scottish football league

Berwickshire is an old Scottish county

Let's just say Berwick has an interesting history , with rumours that it was still at war with Russia ) Crimean war ) as it was considered not England or Scotland at the time war was declared

Jabbawasarollingstone · 10/01/2022 08:12

My FiL's geography is terrible too. He thought where I come from (Northamptonshire) is a wee hop skip and a jump from Manchester. He also thought Bristol was in Dorset.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 10/01/2022 08:13

I call your Carlisle and raise you Dunkirk Blush. In my defence, I’m foreign.

Jabbawasarollingstone · 10/01/2022 08:16

DH just told me that Chester football club is in Wales but Chester is in England so Welsh Covid restrictions apply...even though they play in the English league.

bordermidgebite · 10/01/2022 08:16

Sorry correcting myself

Berwick is on both banks of the tweed but I think the old town is north

St David's is indeed the UK's smallest city.

I think @FelicityBeedle was saying which city had the smallest cathedral though.

What @FelicityBeedle said was

Carlisle is a very small city, even has a cathedral! Second smallest in the U.K., second only to Cambridge’s if I recall correctly

I think you were right about her meaning size of cathedral rather than size of city. Unfortunately Carlisle Cathedral is not the second smallest in the U.K. because there are smaller ones in Scotland and Wales. And Cambridge has no cathedral at all!

From what I can work out, Carlisle was once said to be the second smallest cathedral in ENGLAND, second to the cathedral in Christchurch college OXFORD. However other buildings in England smaller than both of them have since been designated cathedrals.

FanGirlX · 10/01/2022 08:24

I didn't know Cambridge didn't have a cathedral. Is it still classed as a city?

Didn't it used to be the case that every place that was designated a city had to have a cathedral? I remember reading a few years ago, that Preston was being elevated to city status, despite not having a cathedral and that was unusual.

I think it’s the other way round- everywhere with a cathedral is a city.

I promise you it doesn’t have one!
