Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

So was just looking at where Morcambe is, whilst watching the shambolic Spurs game. And was surprised to see Carlisle is in England... I would have bet my DH life on it being in Scotland Confused

Isn't Carlisle in Scotland?

Pen-y-ghent really has no right being in Yorkshire! Definitely sounds like it belongs in Snowdonia Wink[/quote]
I consider myself pretty good at geography and wouldn't have trouble with putting most places on this thread atleast vaguely in the right area. But that one got me, I had to look it up to make sure you weren't having us on! I would have sworn that was in wales! And I holiday in Yorkshire regularly- have been to settle too!

Mysterian · 09/01/2022 19:40

I went to Carlisle once.

True story.

I lived in Thirsk for a few years, and have been to Carlisle and up Pen-y-Ghent.Grin

@ErrolTheDragon

The lawlessness that resulted in that area led to the Border Reivers, who are interesting to read about if you're into history. The Border Reivers were generally a bit further north than Carlisle, but not by much.

They operated over quite a wide area both sides of the border, attested to by the number of old 'Peel towers' down into Lancashire.

There's one is Arnside, is that the most southerly one?
NashvilleQueen · 09/01/2022 20:01

I know it isn't but I always think Pontefract sounds like it's in Wales.

rambleonplease · 09/01/2022 20:10

Yep it's in Cumbria, so certainly part of England. However a bit of a history geek, so some trivia, it use to be part of Scotland until the late 11th century when it was part of Scotland.

Shuffletime · 09/01/2022 20:10

I still don't really believe Leads Castle is in Kent.

Shuffletime · 09/01/2022 20:11

Leeds Castle that should say.

MajorCarolDanvers · 09/01/2022 21:09

@DementedPanda

Carlisle is North West. Classed as Cumbria I believe. I'm north east... Northumberland. Berwick was split in two half's.. North Berwick and Berwick.i could be wrong but North Berwick is Scottsh border? Carlisle isn't far from the Scottish border on the north west side.
Berwick and North Berwick are completely different places 40 miles apart.

Berwick is just south of the border and North Berwick is in East Lothian at the mouth of Firth of Forth

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/01/2022 21:28

Petty France, Dunkirk and Pennsylvania are all just outside Bath.
What confuses me is that two places spelled Gillingham are pronounced differently depending on in you're talking about the one in Kent or the one in Dorset.

RampantIvy · 09/01/2022 22:23

There is a Little Germany in Bradford

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2022 23:06

There's at least another couple in that area, and others (remains of records) further south in Lancashire. Turton Tower is a pele which was built onto to become a manor house , rather than just being a ruin in a farm, for instance.
There are remains/records of similar towers even further south - presumably for similar defensive purposes but at some point for other raiders rather than 'border reivers' per se.

ohfook · 09/01/2022 23:52

I'm the same with Berwick. There's a part of my brain that will never recognise that it is not in Scotland.

BeyondShrinks · 09/01/2022 23:59

I'm truly shite at geography, but I did know this one.

(Only as my parents lived in Annan for a while, though.)

PickAChew · 10/01/2022 00:01

That explains my surprise, @errolthedragon. I probably noticed after a couple of glasses :o

Downtherefordancing · 10/01/2022 00:03

@Imkindreally

Currently on a train from Edinburgh to London and went through Carlisle - before today if I’d have guessed I’d have said the same Blush
That train must be taking a pretty weird route. I’ve taken many trains from Edinburgh to London and none have gone through Carlisle. Edinburgh to London trains follow the east coast. Carlisle is on the west.
PickAChew · 10/01/2022 00:06

Apart from the ones taking the west coast route. Though that is London to Glasgow.

Theunamedcat · 10/01/2022 00:11

When my ex husband lied to me (it was extremely obvious) he said he temporarily moved to Devon (we are West Midlands) I was ashamed to admit I didn't know exactly how far away Devon was from where we lived I knew it was far but it was a lot further than I thought (hence finding out he lied so easily)

They really should teach British geography in school

I was curious and put into Google maps ... the choices include both LNER (a bit under 5 hrs) and Avanti West Coast (just over 5 hrs). So not that odd.

Mailbag · 10/01/2022 00:16

I was completely taken aback the first time I was told exactly where Swindon is. I still think everyone is taking the piss.

ErrolTheDragon · 10/01/2022 00:22

Why, where did you think it was? And wtf would anyone take the piss about where Swindon was?
theNumbersStation · 10/01/2022 00:29

Indeed Errol

Have used it myself. And it goes through Carlisle. 🚂

dinahsdishes · 10/01/2022 00:34

Most people take the piss out of Swindon, not normally related to its location though Grin where did you think it was @mailbag ?

ItsOnlyWordsInnit · 10/01/2022 01:05

@Toddlerteaplease

I always thought Tripoli was in Italy.
To confuse the matter further, there's also a city called Tripoli in northern Lebanon.
Redsquirrel5 · 10/01/2022 01:08

FanGirlX you right Carlisle is a city in Cumbria. It has a beautiful Cathedral.
I know where Settle is and I have been on the train. I don’t advise anyone to go when there is snow about as there is a lot on that root.

DD went to Uni with a lad from Torpenhow does anyone know how to pronounce it? We recently bought some cheese at a Farmer’s market from there. DH ate it before Christmas🙄

Thirsk has a great market. We have camped there years ago but always stopped if we were passing through. Mainly to buy some Emmerdale cheese.
All Creatures was filmed around there and there are lovely villages all along that road. Sutton Bank is hard work in summer following the tourist traffic.
