Over rated luxury items?

What things are luxury items that you think are okay, but are overrated?

For me, it is Molton Brown products. I have a relative who keeps buying me these for presents. They are fine, I use them happily, but no way are they worth the cost.

Very expensive hand soaps...I really can't see the point

Comedycook · 08/01/2022 16:25

And expensive candles

hopeishere · 08/01/2022 16:25

Agree with Milton Brown. Also Babedas (or however it's spelt) bath foam is revolting.

L'occitane. Especially the mens CADE range shave cream. I can't stand the smell. DH thinks is nice, but no better than cheap shaving foam.

TabithaTittlemouse · 08/01/2022 16:28

yves saint laurent touche eclat I like it but you can get better for less money. why can’t I stop buying it?

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 16:28

A colleague used to rave about babadedas. She gave me some as a present. Perfectly fine, but being honest not any better than a supermarket alternative.

Moulton brown hand wash

BleuJay · 08/01/2022 16:29

Jo Malone has gone the same way as Molten Brown. Once decent brands and are now rubbish.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 08/01/2022 16:29

Most Mercedes made after about 1997

TheDuchessOfMN · 08/01/2022 16:30

Charlotte Tilbury. It’s just nasty.

Florencenotflo · 08/01/2022 16:30

Not a luxury product, but expensive cleaning stuff. It all gets washed down the sink in the end. If the basic own range kitchen/bathroom cleaner does the job, I'm not paying more for a nicer bottle.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/01/2022 16:31

Agree with Moulton Brown. It's nice but nothing special.

1positivity · 08/01/2022 16:33

I like this thread

I like molton brown stuff though.

I guess expensive candles but I'd spend up to about £15 on one so that's ok right?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 08/01/2022 16:34

Cashmere anything. Yes it’s soft, but it pulls, tears, wears through, and get holes in very easily.

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 16:36

@1positivity you can spend your own money however you like.
This thread is really about things sold as luxury, that really aren't. Of course everyone will have different views on that.

The poshest friends I have had Molton Brown handwash in their downstairs toilet. DP was astounded when I said they probably paid £15 for the bottle.

I don't know if its luxury but its certainly very expensive. Those 1000 thread count sheets you get from john lewis. My DH said they were absolutely essential but I can't tell the difference between them and primark, i sleep the same.

Emma Hardie cleansing balm , i got it from TK Maxx but its nothing special. Its just cleanser, it goes down the plughole. most expensive skincare is indistinguishable from the cheap ones tbh

Bobbi brown foundation.

Kat von D tattoo liner- not sure its luxury but Loreal/beauty pie is way better.

Molton Brown definitely

Barbour puffa jacket- it was a gift and i do like it but its not really any warmer or better than my hollister jacket.

Teenagekicksmyass · 08/01/2022 16:39

I got my daughter some Olaplex number 3 for Christmas. It cost £27. I tried it today and couldn’t see a scrap of difference in my hair, apart from it’s full of static today Confused

gogohm · 08/01/2022 16:42

Most expensive items are about the label rather than quality. Expensive candies, skincare, designer clothing, make up etc if about buying into the label.

If you like a product and can afford it then it's ok, but don't be fooled into thinking it is intrinsically better. My lovely scented candles are Aldi and my non scented ones are half used ones from church (can't be used once below a certain length for safety reasons)

TabithaTittlemouse · 08/01/2022 16:44

@onlychildhamster noooo! I’m a massive Emma Hardie fan, my skin has never been so amazing!

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 16:45

@gogohm Yes I dont mind paying more if it is genuinely better and worth the extra money. But many things are not.

I actually quite like Molton brown, but we live near an outlet so it’s not that expensive and I find it lasts waaaay longer than cheap body wash. A bottle can easily last me 2/3 months of everyday usage.

Overrated are:

Cashmere (too much hassle / care)
Dyson
Afternoon tea (it’s always too sweet and makes me feel a bit sick)

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 16:57

Why is Dyson overrated?

Diptyque candles. I love a candle and bought the roses one as a treat. Nope, I've had better.

Touché eclat- not the best and mine smelt musty after about a week.

Also not a fan of Molton brown, or any high end soap/ lotions as the fragrances irritate my skin.

RoyalFamilyFan · 08/01/2022 17:11

@sqirrelfriends I got a rash from a gifted Molton Brown moisturiser. Nothing else has ever given me a rash.

I think generally lots of luxury brands have cheapened their ingredients over the past few years. I used to love Clarins Relax Bubble Bath - they have changed the formula to a cheaper one and it's not the same.
