Phrases you hate reading on mumsnet

I’ve been on mumsnet for about 18 years and you know what, if I read about people putting ducks in a row once more I might go mental.
What phrase do you hate.

OP posts:
ilovesushi · 08/01/2022 14:11

I love the "hill to die on" phrase! I'm not even sure how you use it or what it actually means, but it seems so dramatic. Only ever come across it in the context of MN posts.

WarmSausageTea · 08/01/2022 14:11

'Discuss' there was one of those this morning. It's mucking about on MN not A Level English exam.

This drives me mad, along with ‘Reader’. I can put up with them in literature or exams, but MN? Nope.

HTH irritates me, it always seems to come from a poster who thinks they’re being cleverer than they are.

But I like monkeys and circus, and bunfight.

Lipsandlashes · 08/01/2022 14:11

I also hate “can you link to that evidence please?” Or just “evidence?!”
No, I can’t because we’re on Mumsnet not a bloody court of law!

YesIKnowIABUbutIamreallytired · 08/01/2022 14:12

Joining a thread and starting a post with "I mean". And then continuing on with their sarcastic/condescending comment.

Saying something "needs done". Kids need fed. Toilet needs cleaned. Poster needs punched.

Ezydoesit · 08/01/2022 14:12

I keep seeing identikit and not sure why it is annoying me.

FanGirlX · 08/01/2022 14:13

@Angrymum22

“I don’t have children….” Why the f are they offering their opinion/advice then on a parenting forum. Same applies to those who have never been married. Long marriage/relationship of 5yrs????
It may have started as a parenting forum but the majority of threads aren't about parenting. There is no reason why non parents shouldn't join in on mumsnet.

I take your point about people who aren't parents offering advice on parenting situations, haven't been married and offering marriage advice (unless they are a child psychologist or marriage counsellor but that would be rare).

It applies to other threads too:

On a Dry January thread - "I rarely drink but I don't know why you need to have a thread about giving up booze for a month"

On an infertility thread - "I got pregnant with my 3 almost accidentally, just keep trying Smile"

Plus the ongoing issue with non teachers offering teachers advice on the teaching threads (I'm not a teacher but this entertains me).

YesIKnowIABUbutIamreallytired · 08/01/2022 14:13

Educate yourself in response to any opinion that is different to their own. This is everywhere right now.

Pegasushaswings · 08/01/2022 14:14

Not my monkeys not my circus is from a Polish saying-i like it but LOATHE

wow, just wow-said by virtue signallers mainly

And worst of all is ‘there, fixed that for you’ to someones who has made a mistake in their post or got information wrong. Its so nasty!

echt · 08/01/2022 14:14

Gonna..

doublemonkey · 08/01/2022 14:14

'Are you on glue?' when someone's post is a bit confusing. Absolutely vi horrible thing to say to someone.

FanGirlX · 08/01/2022 14:15

@ilovesushi

I think it's along the lines of "pick your battles".
Tara336 · 08/01/2022 14:15

@SilverOtter you are not alone it drives me nuts when people end a question with “no”? There was a thread the other day that ended with “no?” I couldn’t bring myself to read it on principle 😂

AngelinaFibres · 08/01/2022 14:18

@Ohmycron

Also cut and colour. I know it’s not a mumsnst phrase but it just is so God awful
Oh no I wrote cut and colour on another thread this morning. What should I say instead ? SmileSmile
BoodleBug51 · 08/01/2022 14:18

People who have to get in on a post that they're ECV or CV.

I don't know why but it makes me really really mad. We're all bloody vulnerable. Don't put yourself on a higher plane of worth than everyone else because everyone means something to someone, even if it's their cat.

And if a man's being an arse, I love waiting for the "is he on the spectrum" or "is he depressed" replies....

No, he's just a dickhead.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 08/01/2022 14:18

I agree with just about every previous post, although I am rather partial to the occasional Odfod.

Doggydoodah123 · 08/01/2022 14:18

@donkey86

‘Picky bits’ eurgh
yes this really irks me for some reason!
NoOtherShadeOfBlue · 08/01/2022 14:18

I also hate 'Meh. I couldn't get worked up about this'. It's so dismissive and I only ever see it in response to an OP who is actually completely justified in being worked up. The 'meh' is the worst bit.

Bananapants2020 · 08/01/2022 14:19

The fake fucking French - 'plus ça change...', 'insouciance' bandied about as if it's part of normal people's everyday vocabulary. It's not. You're showing off to make yourself seem middle class. So pretentious. Bet you didn't even pass GCSE French.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 08/01/2022 14:19

Not a phrase but it REALLY irritates me when posters quote the ENTIRE long and detailed OP and to write their response.

You do not need to quote the OP. We are on thread. We have all read the OP.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/01/2022 14:19

A recent trend on social media and mumsnet is posting pictures of your LFTs...

Ohyesiam · 08/01/2022 14:21

@BiscuitLover3678

What on earth is a bun fight ?
You make a salient point. Much as I don’t like the phrase, I think I’d quite like to be involved in a physical Bun fight.
Lipsandlashes · 08/01/2022 14:21

Agree ECV and CV became boring, attention seeking and way overused at least 18 months ago.
MrsDrDear · 08/01/2022 14:21

"I'm broken"

"Hold me down"

Basically anything over dramatic, thread is hidden.

BeefSupreme · 08/01/2022 14:21

The Christmas threads with their multiple:

  • “smellies” just say toiletries, you’re a grown woman and that’s just a horrible and stupid word.
  • “posh chocs” you mean chocolate?

Accusations of “PFB syndrome” are condescending and annoying. Are you never allowed to talk about your oldest/only child on here?
