I took my dog for a walk in Goldenacre Park yesterday late afternoon. The weather was not good, sleet and snow and cold.
There was nobody else in the park. We walked round the lake and up by the cafe and back round again.
As we approached the lake there was lots of bird noise. I saw a man with a toddler in an all in one suit and a young German Shepherd dog wearing some sort of harness running free
The man was openly encouraging the dog to run at the Swans. It chased the ducks and kept running to the edge of the lake.
The birds were going crazy.
I watched the guy and then I shouted across to him 'Don't let your dog do that mate'
He replied ' I am fully capable of looking after my own dog'
I said 'clearly not'
He did it again telling the dog to 'go on'
I shouted 'put your dog on the lead, this is how the wildlife gets killed'
He shouted back 'Fuck off Cunt' 'Go on fuck off you bitch'
There was nobody else there.
I had no choice but to walk away in case it escalated

Was this your husband with your little tot there in the afternoon?

I was no match for an aggressive man and I had to leave and go home. He was well built and wearing a woolly hat. The dog looked about 18 months maybe a little older. hard to say from a distance but it was quite large and running wild.

To say I was upset is an understatement. To say I felt impotent is another. I felt threatened so had to leave the bird life to this moron and his dog. There were signs everywhere about avian 'flu. How horrible to set your dog on sick animals like that.

Why is this for the wife to sort out?!?!

This 100%.

There are a load of assumptions rolled up in "was this your husband"

 • Man may not be married.
 • Man may be gay.
 • Child may not be his (could be uncle, friend, vastly older brother or step-brother via mother or father).
 • Assumption that a 'wife' has any control over a man's behaviour. Adding here that any man could very well be equally agressive to a partner or even violent to a partner.
 • Responsiblity of a woman to "sort it out"

Shouldn't the post be "do you know this man?"

Lalliella · 07/01/2022 20:05

If his wife is on here and her toddler starts calling her a fucking cunt, she’ll know where they learned those words!

After the aggressive way he spoke to me and realising there was nobody else there I left before I had the chance to think clearly. I wish they would install a camera by the lake so this sort of abuse could be recorded. Phoning up is a waste of time. Nobody wants to know. Nine times out of ten the number goes unanswered. Shaming these louts would be the best deterrent IMHO
If you want to shame them, take a photo and putting it on a load of local facebook groups would surely be a better way?
Moonface123 · 07/01/2022 20:07

Its awful behaviour OP, l would imagine that its probably a local walk for him, so l would be inclined to speak to the council or local wildlife trust, they could maybe put up posters about keeping dog under control by the wildlife.
l was walking around a wildlife area yesterday and unbeknown to me some men were culling the geese, literally shooting them out of the sky, there were no notices up, no warning of what was taking place, they had parked their 4x4 s all around the lake, when l questioned them they said they were culling them because the geese were damaging the crops. It is usually such a serene and peaceful place, but l felt quite upset. Plus l was surprised at the lack of health and safety, they were still allowing people to walk around the area. l think a farmer owns the land as he has signs up dogs will be shot if they chase the sheep.

Viviennemary · 07/01/2022 20:07

You should report him to the police. I think swans are a protected species.,

JurassicWorld · 07/01/2022 20:08

Take a photo, put a post on social media with the location explaining what the jerk was doing and let it go viral. He sounds like a POS.

ReadtheFT · 07/01/2022 20:09

Meh, they are birds, they have wings, they can fly away or get in the water. No need for so much drama

Salome61 · 07/01/2022 20:14

Well done for speaking out. I live on the coast and always tell people to stop when they are egging their dogs to chase the birds, they are just lazy and can't be arsed to throw a ball for their dogs. FFS it's their home, they shouldn't be hunted when they are trying to feed on the strandline.

Zwellers · 07/01/2022 20:15

Are you a vet?. Just because there is bird flu about doesn't mean the birds are sick. If they were able to swim away from the dog them mistakenly not.
Incidentally Mute swans are protected in the same way all wildlife is but they are not specially protected.

EmmaC78 · 07/01/2022 20:21

I always find these threads really odd, just report it to the correct authority and leave it at that. No need to start a thread about it.

Postchristmasflab · 07/01/2022 20:21

I have been to this park in Leeds and witnessed loads of shitty behaviour, the whole park is a dog on lead park there are signs up from the dog warden.

Me and DS was in the woods watching birds and squirrels eat some seed someone else had left, w out 30 squirrels - it’s was a gorgeous sight! Than a massive daft Labrador came running in. I went to find the owners who where on the path out of eye sight to dog in their own discussion.

It’s a gorgeous park, amazing wildlife and the lake is amazing, but every-time I have been it’s just been spoilt by dog owners.

I don’t think your going to find the wife and what she will do tbf

Postchristmasflab · 07/01/2022 20:25

Just for all the PPs - this park is home to a tonne of wildlife and has signs all over saying dogs on leads only

NewMessageFrom · 07/01/2022 20:26

@CeleriacOfTheNight

But why not ? It could start a trend !

Tbf I think it falls in to the existing 'to the woman in the queue at Stevenage M&S today' trend

Its way worse than that, it's more "woman, know your place and control your man" ODFOD
NewMessageFrom · 07/01/2022 20:27
@Anordinarymum ignore the goading responses on here.

Sounds horrible for you(and the wildlife), and the man is clearly just a piece of shit.

FWI to anyone questioning the op’s title…it made you click and read didn’t it Wink
And what has it helped?

I dont spend much time on the feminist boards, but seriously, why is it the womans fault

mafted · 07/01/2022 20:31

I can never see the point of these threads. As if anyone's going to post "Yes that's our Gaz, he's a right knob"

BleuJay · 07/01/2022 20:36

Is this a reverse and you’re one of the Swans?

InTheNightWeWillWish · 07/01/2022 20:37

Not sure why people are being so sarcastic and antagonistic..obviously not so bothered about wildlife

There are actually two issues at play here Hmm People can care care about wildlife and recognise the guy was a twat whilst also recognising his behaviour has fuck all to do with being a woman’s responsibility. Why is it always the women who have to take responsibility? Do you think if I’d let my dog loose to chase swans someone would be asking my husband to take responsibility and apologise for my actions? That twat is responsible for his own actions. The OP is responsible for trying to make some twat another woman’s problem just because she wants to be vindicated.

QueBarbaridad · 07/01/2022 20:38

As this can’t possibly be a serious attempt to find the perpetrator, it’s just annoying.
What are you playing at?

covilha · 07/01/2022 20:38

OP, you are amazing 💐 I am sorry for some of the comments posted here, well done and thank you fir challenging this. Is there an address we could write to to encourage the council to put up cameras in the area. Thanks

IDontKnowWhyAye · 07/01/2022 20:40

Report thisto crimestoppers

Flipflopblowout · 07/01/2022 20:41

Don't challenge him next time, call the police.

HikingforScenery · 07/01/2022 20:42

Did you have your phone OP? Shame you couldn’t get a video or photo .

Sounds like a scary situation but well done for sticking up for wildlife.

@EmpressCixi

Not my husband either.

But the dog didn’t actually try and catch or harm a bird. It was just running around to the edge of the lake. Perhaps barking a bit.

As there was a lake, the birds were perfectly safe on the water. Their reaction was instinctual and would have happened whether the dog was running about or not. Swans/ducks are going to give warning calls and take to the water the second they see a dog no matter how calm or run about it is. You wouldn’t want them calm around a dog anyway because that means they would be too stupid to avoid a fox.

You were the aggressor in the situation by shouting at him first and ordering him about and telling him to stop his dog running about and to put his dog on a lead. You assumed that his dog would “kill wildlife” but his dog did not, so I have to agree he is actually capable of managing his dog. Many working dogs are trained to herd and chase but not harm. I think you over-reacted and felt impotent because he refused to immediately obey your aggressive demands.

Yeah, I hope you don't own a dog.

It's not okay for dogs to chase wildlife. I don't even let my child run at birds.

Working dogs on farms are trained to herd animals. This was just a twat with a dog antagonising wildlife. But since I see you condone his behaviour tells me chances are it's your husband Grin
