... I am eating a cheese toastie that I made in the frying pan and I can't believe it took me so long to do this. I learnt this on MN and I can't remember who the poster was but thank you. Thankyou
yum

@LowlandLucky

Breakfast toastie, butter bread( for frying) add sliced banana and peanut butter, fry in a pan. So many calories but i don't think they count if you eat it at the weekend.
THAT'S WHAT KILLED ELVIS.
SomethingOnce · 08/01/2022 00:02

Elvis died on a Tuesday. So avoidable.

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 08/01/2022 00:16

I miss my toastie maker, might need to buy another! It was one of the really old breville ones.. < wanders off to eBay >

GromblesofGrimbledon · 08/01/2022 00:44

Sourdough bread. Cut thick.
Tuna mayo with grated mozzarella (plenty) and finely chopped spring onions mixed through.
Butter the outside of the bread. Butter it more. No, more you fool!
Fry it up golden. Get that mozzarella nice and melty.

Serve with Heinz tomato soup.

Oh yes.

WeaverofWords · 08/01/2022 00:46

Have RTFT but after birthday parties when my kids were little, we would dip any leftover little cheese sandwiches in egg & fry. Mmmmmm

gogohm · 08/01/2022 00:48

I've always made them this way - my favourite combo is pastrami, seafood sauce, sauerkraut and Emmental cheese on a seeded wholemeal or rye. Try it (unless vegetarian)

givethatbabyaname · 08/01/2022 00:57

Yes to sourdough. Must be white. Must have a good crust (defence barrier to avoid losing melted cheese).

Salted butter inside.

Thick slice of cheese. Leave about half an inch perimeter, don’t want to waste any melted cheese.

Make sandwich.

Salted butter on both outsides.

Put in frying pan or griddle pan.

Yes to lid of cast iron casserole dish on top. Anything heavy and flat will do.

Medium heat.

Flip once and only once.

Dip into home made tomato soup, which you have made by roasting tomatoes, garlic and salt and pepper, blitzing in a Nutribullet or whatever, adding a dash of balsamic vinegar/sugar (depending on how sweet or sour your tomatoes were) and then heated through in a pot with chicken broth. Sprinkle basil leaves on top.

Grilled cheese sandwiches must be cut in suitable size and shape for the bowl soup will be served in obvs.

It’s basically a margherita pizza, but different ratio of ingredients and a million more kg of animal fat.

Still waiting on news of this double baked potato...

WeeWeeWeeeee · 08/01/2022 01:04

and the double baked potato?

Ladyrattles · 08/01/2022 01:07

Mind blown about the cheese toastie made in a frying pan. But must know about the magical double baked potatoes.

Rummikub · 08/01/2022 01:11

Think this would work with left over chilli and cheese? (Hopeful)

xprincessxjanetx · 08/01/2022 01:15

Delicious isn't it?! My favourite way to make a toastie

minipie · 08/01/2022 01:17

@CurryLover55

Like the idea coating it in beaten egg
Ahhh you want Mozzarella in Carrozza. It’s amazing. Crisp fried eggy bread sandwich with melted mozzarella inside.
WeAllHaveWings · 08/01/2022 01:25

I make mine in an ancient 2nd hand panni maker, it has a floating hinge so I can decide how squashed a sandwich is preferred . I butter the outside of the bread so probably tastes very similar to the frying pan method (and feels posher 😂). Never liked the cut and seal toastie makers. Favourite filling is cheese, tuna, sweetcorn or onion, and mayo.

Givemestrengthorvodka · 08/01/2022 01:35

My clever DH introduced me to these years ago...our favourite filling is ham, cheese, gherkin and some mustard..yum! Never thought to dip it in egg though, what an awesome idea, I'm going to give that a bash tomorrow.

BookFiend4Life · 08/01/2022 01:39

A few options for ideal grilled cheese (from an American pro!)

Soft white bread, lightly smeared with mayo on the outside, a single slice of American cheese (I'm sure that sounds like sacrilege but don't knock it till you've tried it!) Pan fried till golden!

White country bread (also with mayo on the outside) light smear of grainy mustard inside, shredded guyere. Fry till.golden and dip in tomato soup!

Can do the same with jam and a bit of brie.

In any case, a fried egg on top makes a perfect brunch treat!

Angelou79 · 08/01/2022 01:40

Try adding bit of mustard & Worcestershire (Worcester) sauce too! Lush

Things eaten at weekend are only half the calories of weekday meals, so fried banana with peanut butter is practically health food.
Bloodybridget · 08/01/2022 02:16

You bastards! I'm trying to eat more healthily to support DP (who's doing Slimming World) and you have to remind me about toasted cheese sandwiches!

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 08/01/2022 04:00

If this thread disappears from my watch list, before I get to find out about the double jackets, I will sue MN Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/01/2022 04:14

@RockaLock

Also you can make a cheese (& ham) sandwich, dip it in a beaten egg to coat it, and then fry it.

Delicious!

You can make lots of them, cut into triangles, put in ovenproof dish, cover with beaten egg/milk mix and bake in the oven. Delicious savoury bread and butter pudding!
Nat6999 · 08/01/2022 05:11

Halogen oven is my preferred method, put the bread in for a few minutes with no fillings, then put your filling in & cook for 5 minutes on 230 degrees. Cooking the bread first stops it going soggy if you are using wet fillings like tomatoes. If you use mushrooms, dry fry them first to get most of the water out. Toasted sandwiches are my speciality after living 3 months in my first house with no kitchen.

Not the original poster but I bake potatoes in the oven, not microwave. Halve, scoop out potato and mash with grated cheese, refill the half shells and return to oven to reheat. Lovely.
