I don't understand - how have you all been making them if not in a frying pan?

As I (and pp) said upthread, in a toastie machine. The type that clamps down and seals the bread.

I’ve personally never seen anyone here make one in a frying pan, I got the idea from American TV.

In a sandwich toaster. And not with butter on the outside.
CurryLover55 · 07/01/2022 20:46

Must try this! I love toasted sandwiches but the sandwich toaster gets disgusting!

CurryLover55 · 07/01/2022 20:48

Like the idea coating it in beaten egg

OliveHenry · 07/01/2022 20:49

If you put mayo on the outside instead of butter, do you need any more oil/butter in the frying pan, or is there enough in the oil?

OliveHenry · 07/01/2022 20:49

Enough in the mayo even ffs!

Giggorata · 07/01/2022 20:52

Yum!
May I also recommend doing the same procedure with a Marmite sarnie.
You need to use more butter and more Marmite than you would normally use for a cold (mundane, boring) Marmite sarnie, but omg, the umami!

greatape · 07/01/2022 21:01

Jamie Oliver does this with extra cheese on the outside. It does include the heavy pan on top method and a medium not hot heat.

mrstea301 · 07/01/2022 22:02

@Balula

If you think that's magical, try putting one in the air fryer 👌🏻👌🏻
Please - continue!!

@AmIgoinghomeforXmas

I learned about double baked potatoes on here, dc love those.
Tell me more...
Theaspidistraiswilting · 07/01/2022 22:56

I use a sheet of baking paper folded in half with the toaster inside, put a heavy pan on top. Slightly less greasy and don't have to wash any pans!

Theaspidistraiswilting · 07/01/2022 22:57

Toastie not toaster, that wouldn't be delicious.

MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry · 07/01/2022 23:01

So the dilemma is do I have one for breakfast or do I have one for lunch tomorrow?

Also do you butter the outside of the bread when doing it in the air fryer?

DonttouchthatLarry · 07/01/2022 23:17

Another one waiting for the air fryer instructions please!

gelatodipistacchio · 07/01/2022 23:22

No one asked me, but yes, you absolutely must put butter (or better yet, mayo) on the outside of the bread when air frying.

I suggest 180 for about 5 minutes.

gelatodipistacchio · 07/01/2022 23:22

*unless you want a considerably more sad diet version

gelatodipistacchio · 07/01/2022 23:23

@MaryAndGerryLivingInDerry pull yourself together, this is lunch food!!!

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 07/01/2022 23:38

Yes, I love a fried toastie.

I fear I'll go the way of Elvis...

Toasterandjam · 07/01/2022 23:41

I use a toasty bag in the toaster but I might give this a try tomorrow. Been eating a lot if cheese on toast on a Saturday, time for a change!

RicherThanYew · 07/01/2022 23:47

Verily I tell thee that I doth demand the spell of the double bakeded potaytoe Angry Angry

LemonViolet · 07/01/2022 23:53

I’ve been known to do a grilled cheese at 3/4am when giving in to insomnia and accepting I’m awake all night. Have woken everyone up with the smoke alarm once and on another occasion with the house alarm when opening the window to avoid setting off the smoke alarm Blush

LowlandLucky · 07/01/2022 23:55

Breakfast toastie, butter bread( for frying) add sliced banana and peanut butter, fry in a pan. So many calories but i don't think they count if you eat it at the weekend.
