Not fishing for compliments as I know I am a beginner, it's just something I do for fun here and there.
Would love to hear any constructive feedback.
Bit nervous I'll be told it's crap, I'll try to have a thick skin!

It's Adam Ant, Boy George and Pennywise from IT, in case they're completely unrecognisable!

Not sure if this is the right thread for it

Your shading technique is good but proportions are all off. Adam looks like he's been flattened and George's eyes are tiny

Ieattoomuchsugar · 06/01/2022 22:42

Ok thanks for the feedback I'll keep it in mind :)

You’re about 10000 times better than drawing than meSmile

youvegottenminuteslynn · 06/01/2022 22:44

These were all recognisable to me which shows you've got a natural eye for likeness even if the proportions aren't quite right, which is really tough so well done!

My thoughts are that they are all quite different in style, I wouldn't have thought any of them were by the same artist. So to do the art equivalent of finding your voice, I would be really honest with yourself about which style comes most naturally, produces the result you're happiest with and then go to town playing with different subjects in that style.

You can always then try other ones but I think in order to develop your skills and a 'you' style, you need to practice and practice and practice in one style. Otherwise the time and focus and skills built up are being spread thinly, rather than being focused, if that makes sense?

murasaki · 06/01/2022 22:45

I like pennywise a lot. Minimalist. Not so keen on the others, I would have guessed boy George but not adam ant, sorry. I prefer the style of pennywise.

maffhew · 06/01/2022 22:46

I think they're really good. George and pennywise are the better two.

I enjoy drawing. I'm crap at it but it relaxes me.

Drinkyourweaklemondrink · 06/01/2022 22:46

Pennywise is good.
If you work on proportions that would
Be amazing x

iloveredpandas · 06/01/2022 22:48

Not awful but do look a bit like my C grade GCSE portfolio. Sorry.

Ieattoomuchsugar · 06/01/2022 22:49

Thanks for the kind and constructive feedback

I know nothing about art, but the third was instantly recognisable as boy George by the eyes- and I think that’s a hard thing to achieve, so I’m impressed!

Ieattoomuchsugar · 06/01/2022 22:50

I do agree the proportions of Adam are off

Campfirewood · 06/01/2022 22:52

Well you’re a lot better than me 😄 if you’re a beginner I think they’re pretty good!

lynntheyresexswappers · 06/01/2022 22:52

Art is subjective, but if you were aiming for genetic portrait style, there are some things to work on. Proportion, shading, facial definition, etc. If you really enjoy it, keep at it! Some classes would really help and it's a great start.

(I'm an artist by trade Smile)

Kshhuxnxk · 06/01/2022 22:52

Pennywise has great shading.

Boy George good but where's his nose?
Adam Ant - mmmmmmmmmmm not sure.

Ieattoomuchsugar · 06/01/2022 22:53

Haha the pic of BG I used to draw mine didn't have a nose so thought I'd leave it off mine too

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/01/2022 22:55

Pennywise is really good. It’s hard to portray menace but you’ve completely nailed it with the eyes.
Not so keen on the other two but as a PP said, they’re instantly recognisable so you’re well on your way.

Are you an art student?

EishetChayil · 06/01/2022 22:57

The first one looks like the X Factor audition girl with the huge mouth.

Can you give feedback on some of my artwork please
CiaoForDiNiaoSaur · 06/01/2022 22:58

I think the Pennywise one is creepy. Which is a good thing.
BG, well I can tell who it's meant to be although the proportions are off.
AA, tbh I wouldn't know it was AA at all. Sorry.

Having said that they are all a million times better than anything I can draw

Jellykat · 06/01/2022 22:59

For a beginner they're good, and i agree with youvegottenminutes..
It feels 'tight' like you're trying to portray the image perfectly, almost in a 'graphics' kind of way.. but the lips in Adam is your interpretation, the shading in Pennywise is fab, and the bits you've picked out in Georges braids are all your individual style.

Practice and grow your style, it comes organically through time as you gain confidence.. try different mediums like charcoal, loosen up and be bold, i think you could be really good!

TheViewFromTheCheapSeats · 06/01/2022 23:02

They are good beginner art works and you definitely have something to work with.
I think the best are the minimalist ones, maybe move onto ink for cleaner lines and try to develop that style as your style? Your weakest area is shading though, I think when your proportions are a little off it magnifies it. If you want to try portraits in a more traditional sense that’s your area of improvement.

Aprilx · 06/01/2022 23:03

I think you can draw, but faces are particularly hard and I think it is maybe not showing your best work. I definitely do not recognise this as Adam Ant and I can see it is Boy George, but I think that is more because of the hat and long braided hair which is very much one of his early looks. But regardless of what I thought of recognisability, i can definitely see that you have artistic talent.

WorraLiberty · 06/01/2022 23:06

I recognised who they were straight away!

I agree about AA looking squashed though.

DramaAlpaca · 06/01/2022 23:11

I've no idea who Pennywise is. I recognised Adam Ant and Boy George immediately, you have the beginnings of a likeness, but the perspectives are way off.

I take it you are working from photos. Have you tried marking your paper out in a grid? It would help you a lot working out what goes where.

Quackpot · 06/01/2022 23:12

Pennywise is chilling. I can't look at it more than a glance. The others I'm not keen, they seem off. But the style of pennywise you are very good at.
