If so what is your job please?

I absolutely hate my job, there must be people who enjoy going to work. If you are one of these lucky people then please tell me what you do and why you enjoy your work.

OP, before you said what job you did I just knew you’d be a teacher. I am sort of in the same boat and also a secondary teacher.

I have the “dreads” about going back tomorrow too and I quite like my job. The pressure seems unreal in schools at the moment though and I am considering moving to a different type of school or moving into the civil service.

The thought of teaching for another 20 years is quite a sobering thought.

Welfare rights officer. I love it so much that when I retire I may do sessions at CAB or similar.

I get great satisfaction from proving the DWP wrong at tribunals and getting shedloads of money in arrears payments as a result.

I'm a Practice Nurse. I love my job because it's varied and I have a lot of control over my day to day work, work alone but surrounded by a good team. Patients one at a time in nice small doses. Clinics are well managed so very rarely stressful. All ages from 0-100. Health promotion, disease prevention and management of long term conditions. Always new things to learn and skills to develop. Plenty of room for progression clinically or into other areas.

Like PPs, a better paid career would be helpful but 10 years ago I had 4 GCSEs and never held a job down more than a year, so it's a win for me. There is scope to earn a lot more with experience and development.

DD wants to do this, is it really hard to get into? She knows she will have to be uniform PC first, just wondering if it's realistic to go into it with that goal or if it's more something you end up in if you're really lucky, after many years.

Me, lecturer in nursing, absolutely love it despite the quite crap pay. You can be innovative, creative and I'm leading on some really interesting new projects.

Compared to the actual trade (being a mental health nurse) it's a breeze! It's a shame as I'm very passionate about mental health nursing but the conditions made it untenable for me to continue. Very experienced and senior (band 8a and 20 years plus qual) but I began to hate it and had to leave. I just hope the current bunch of students can be the trail blazers for positive change!

That was my dream job when I was a kid! But I developed a massive rebellious at puberty and it's never gone away. I think that makes me constitutionally unsuited to being a police officer.

I work in early years, I love the children and the fun and laughter we have as well as the bonds we make with the children and their families however I dislike the amount of paperwork we have an also some people think it’s an easy job “playing with children all day” . The money isn’t great either but I still enjoy it .

Merryoldgoat · 03/01/2022 19:44

Broadly happy. I’m a Finance Manager but have project responsibilities and operational jobs too - I work in a well financed Independent School with a very nice SLT and Governing Body. I earn quite well for part time (29 hours) and have a lot of autonomy and well defined tasks which is key for me.

I wish I was a dancer but that ship sailed 5 stone and 20 years ago 🤣

That sounds fantastic - what a great thing to do.

I’m a primary teacher (class based DHT) and I really love my job!

What I would say to those who teach and do not enjoy it is that every school is different and it’s worth exploring a school change before a complete career change! I have a fantastic team and we ensure a good work life balance.

HugeAckmansWife · 03/01/2022 19:45

I also teach in the independent sector. One of the advantages is fewer pupils per class so there is less marking overall and much more freedom to design the curriculum to suit the cohort. We teach til 4.15 and there's extra stuff on every night til 6 but levels of involvement with all that vary. In some you get paid more than state but not all. I'm expensive now and in theory they could hire someone cheaper but I seem to be valued.

Band 5 Staff Nurse. Love my job so much. Hospital-based, patient facing. I'd do it for free!
Don't tell Sajid Javid!

I work in a supermarket doing other peoples shopping 😊 best job I’ve ever had 👍 down side is that the hours can be a bit crap because they give small contracts but I’ve just managed to up mine 😊

Discount is handy too

Yerroblemom1923 · 03/01/2022 19:48

Self employed cleaner. I love it! Great clients who I'm happy to visit. Wish I'd done it years ago. Have never been in a job where I feel so valued and appreciated.

claracluck1978 · 03/01/2022 19:49

I love my job: I'm an auctioneer/valuer and no two days are ever the same.

I get to handle items of great sentimental & commercial value and I get to hear the stories people remember about their items. I often have to deal with deceased estates but then the next day I can be selling an engagement ring to a young couple.

It really is a wonderfully interesting career but it could be better paid!

Nora do you need particular qualifications for this, or does a degree suffice?
MintMe · 03/01/2022 19:52

Head of Marketing. I love it. I'm genuinely excited about going back to work tomorrow.
