If so what is your job please?

I absolutely hate my job, there must be people who enjoy going to work. If you are one of these lucky people then please tell me what you do and why you enjoy your work.

I'm an accountant and I enjoy my job.
I'm a bit of a geek and like working with spreadsheets and numbers, watching the company grow and feeling that I'm part of that.
There is also a lot to be said for 9 to 5 hours, being able to work from home/flexibly, and the pay isn't too bad.

Ste23321 · 03/01/2022 19:19

@HugeAckmansWife it’s just the fact I can never be done and always something I should be doing. Even on days off I’m planning and thinking ahead, or trying to get ahead. It consumes my whole life. I’m always thinking about it. It’s a lot of stress. It’s a lonely job as you’re in your room all day. I hate the fact when I’m ill I feel I have to go in.

Mental health worker in a high school.

Love my job and giving my students the safe space I needed at their age is a bonus reward

PumpkinPickle22 · 03/01/2022 19:22

Vet receptionist
Love it
Lovely pets
Lovely clients
Lovely colleagues
Rubbish pay!!

Been doing it for 20 years and no day is the same. I look forward to going to work

I'm a solicitor and generally I enjoy my job, it's interesting and varied. I do litigation which can sometime get stressful, but I'm lucky to have a supportive and helpful departmental senior leadership team. I also enjoy the fact that I can WFH permanently - gives me a better work life balance.
I have occasional days where I dream of quitting and becoming a primary school teaching assistant Grin but they're pretty few and far between.

Speech and Language Therapist. 20 years in and still love it.

Ste23321 · 03/01/2022 19:24

@mummydoingamasters what training did you do to work in your job? That’s something that sounds appealing and I can see you would get satisfaction from it.

I work in contracts and procurement. I wouldn’t say I love my job but I don’t mind it and the people I work with are great, the company looks out for the staff. So a good place to be. I used to work for the NHS so it is very refreshing to be valued.

deadrave · 03/01/2022 19:26

I work as a speech and language therapist and I don’t think I’ve ever had a day I dread going into work.

Ste23321 · 03/01/2022 19:27

@Siennabear that sounds interesting. What training/qualifications do you need for your job?

@Ste23321 I have a BA in early childhood studies and a bit of experience within local council social care referral centre, but mainly, it was a new role and they wanted someone they could train and start from scratch with. Since starting, I've done a lot of the free courses on mental health and I've done mental health first aid which helps.

Bonus is that I keep to term time only as well!

ForsythiaInBloom · 03/01/2022 19:29

I’m a lawyer is a niche role. I work on my own terms now, because I’ve got a good client base and in-demand skills. It’s taken years to reach this level of confidence and seniority so I can work my way though. The pandemic also brought about desperately needed flexibility in a very rigid and staid profession, whatever law firms like to boast about modernity. Money has always been (very) good, but the billable hours pressure and dog-eat-dog culture of many law firms made me stop and reconsider how I worked.

livinthedream1995 · 03/01/2022 19:29

I work for the probation service as a MAPPA administrator. MAPPA stands for multi agency public protection arrangements - certain offences will make a person a MAPPA case. There are 3 categories of offences and then 3 levels of management. I’m involved in setting up MAPPA meetings, minuting meetings, chasing actions, that kind of thing. I liaise with lots of different agencies outside the probation service and it’s been a real eye opener for me. There are days where I really don’t feel the love for my job, but most of the time I do enjoy it and the managers for our team are amazing. As you can imagine though, you do hear some awful things.

Musmerian · 03/01/2022 19:30

Secondary School English Teacher . Absolutely love it. Been at current school for 17 years. Brilliant department and supportive school. It’s independent so although there’s pressure and the last couple of years have been bonkers we have a lot more freedom in how we teach. Going back on Wednesday and looking forward to it.

Hoppinggreen · 03/01/2022 19:30

Me!
I mentor small businesses

catgirl1976 · 03/01/2022 19:31

I like my job generally (HR) but not the company I work for or my current role which is too generalist for me. Hoping to hear on a 2nd interview for something which is entirely focused on my specialism and home based so fingers crossed.

EmergencyPoncho · 03/01/2022 19:31

OP there are lots of charity jobs which are related to education, have a look at guardian jobs and charity job.co.uk

Treedown · 03/01/2022 19:31

another construction project manager type here. I really enjoy it. every day is somewhat different and fast paced, lots to juggle but its interesting, challenging and well paid.

qualitygirl · 03/01/2022 19:31

Yep...I love it. I studied microbiology essentially (simplified way of describing my degree) I work in pharmaceuticals and I'm in QC Micro...love my job. Love the company I work for and the people. Great pay, great balance and great benefits.

shouldistop · 03/01/2022 19:32

I quite like my job. I work in the third sector as part of a small team helping universal credit claimants make their claims and keep them up to date. It's badly paid but the hours are good and it's rewarding.

babybythesea · 03/01/2022 19:32

TA for Year 1 and 2. Shit pay and a lot of unpaid overtime but the school is brilliant - really supportive. And the kids in my class are the bees knees. Love them to pieces.
I’m looking forward to seeing them all again.

GrowingUpIsATrap · 03/01/2022 19:33

I work for a charity supporting unpaid carers. The money is rubbish but my job is highly flexible and I have a lot of autonomy in what I do which is important to me. I feel very valued and I hope to progress over thr next year to a leadership role.

Lucyccfc68 · 03/01/2022 19:33

I absolutely love my job - mainly because I have a massive amount of freedom to decide what I do.

I work in Organisational Development, which is a strand of HR. I am responsible for learning and development, recruitment, community engagement, Corporate Social Responsibility, graduates and apprentices.

I am lucky that in this senior role, I get to set the strategy and decide what work I need to do that benefits the business. The Board trust me and let me get on with it.

Cornishmumofone · 03/01/2022 19:33

I'm a Learning Designer at a uni. I love the variety of work that I get to do.

Ste23321 · 03/01/2022 19:35

@EmergencyPoncho thank you!

@Musmerian I’m also a teacher. I wish I had same love for my job like you do. What are management like? In state schools once you become experienced they like to make your life hell as they have to pay more so they rather get a new teacher who they have to pay half the wages to compared to an experienced teacher. Do independents value experience over money?
