Awful sickness and tummy ache...my poor DD

So my poor DD, 14, woke late this morning and had bad tummy cramps. I originally thought it could be down to her period but she said it was above her belly button and different to any period pain she's had previously.
Got progressively worse and then she started being sick at about 5pm. Has been sick probably every half hour since, and the pain isn't letting up.
Called 111 at 6.30pm and after a triage they sent us for an out of hours gp appt at 9.45pm. She had a mild temperature before we left but noticeably cold hands I thought.
Told the gp everything, including that we'd had a takeaway curry last night but that both daughters shared a portion between them and my younger DD 2 is absolutely fine. She had a feel of her tummy which she said wasn't guarded. Tried a finger oxygen monitor but said her finger was too cold so couldn't get a reading.
So her diagnosis was that it was possibly food poisoning.
So my questions are...
If you share the same portion is it possible that one person can get food poisoning but the other doesn't?
If it is food poisoning how long will the cramps and vomiting last? She is really struggling now, she is drinking a fair bit as we've said that's the best way to clear out her tummy ( no idea if that's true but don't want her to get dehydrated ). She is literally vomiting lots of greeny, yellowy liquid.... bile I presume ( sorry if tmi ).
I have never had food poisoning so no idea how long this will go on for, or how long she can cope with so much vomit...it's been 7 hours so far Sad
Is there anything else I should be looking out for. No rashes of any kind and her temp is 37.4 at the mo.

Your poor DD. It does sound like it could be food poisoning, and I believe it’s possible to eat the same thing and not be poisoned due to different bacteria in the gut/immune system etc?

I’ve had it and it was very painful, especially when you’re puking up bile. Hopefully she’ll get some sleep tonight and turn a corner tomorrow?

bobkate · 02/01/2022 00:49

Thank you... I really feel sorry for her. She said she give up her phone for a month if the pain would go away so she must feel crap Smile I really hope she manages to drop off soon. She's annoyed as she dozed off in the car on the way home but just can't settle again now.

The GP sounds a bit useless tbh!

I would also do a LFT, my 2nd dose of covid started with cramps, sickness and a pain in my stomach.

I hope she is ok, I would say stay on standby, is she vomiting because of the pain? Or is the pain 100% in her stomach?

I'd also suggest a covid test. My aunt symptoms were stomach pain and vomiting along with a temperature. Hope she feels better soon.

Dilbertian · 02/01/2022 01:01

Poor lovey.

Has she done a LFT? I had stomach cramps and severe nausea with Covid.

The liquid she is vomiting is mostly the water she is drinking. She may be drinking too quickly. Let her have only tiny sips, but very frequently, whether through sipping or by taking a teaspoon at a time. It seems to me that drinking enough to swallow makes it more likely that the stomach rebels and chucks it back up. So 'deceive' the stomach by only taking such small amounts that it won't respond.

In the past, when I had severe stomach cramps and constant vomiting from food poisoning, the GP prescribed something that really eased it. IIRC it was buscopan followed by codeine.

Hope she feels better soon.

bobkate · 02/01/2022 01:02

Thanks.... I did half think it was a bit of a pointless trip in a way, although not sure what else she could have done? We did lfts at 6 before I called 111, just in case. Negative but will continue testing each day just in case.
I think the pain is in her tummy.. and the vomit is not due to the pain. Althoufhnot sure how I could determine that 100%. It is a definite cramping type pain by how she's described it. She has been doubled over a lot and struggling to find a comfy position. Earlier she was up,down,up,down and pacing the room. Lots of groaning and crouching over which is why we called 111.
I don't know whether we should have just gone to a and e, but felt it wasn't an accident and at the time not an emergency as such. I suppose I still don't think it was an emergency but I don't know how long is too long to be vomiting as she is.

Thanks, that's a good tip re the sipping of water. I'll go tell her now. The gp did prescribe her some buscapan but of course there were no pharmacies open that late by the time we came out. I'll try in the morning.

It could be appendicitis. The pain usually starts in the centre and moves across to the right, so if the pain persists and shifts, it might need a trip to A&E. I’d choose back to back childbirth for a week over appendicitis - the pain of it made me vomit until it was just bile. It does present differently in different people and can be tricky to diagnose, A&E scanned me just to be sure as I wasn’t presenting typically, thankfully they caught it before it ruptured.

JackTheHack · 02/01/2022 01:06

Did he mention appendicitis? If it's food poisoning which it sounds like, give her water with a little sugar. And sip. The green puke will bi bile

edwinbear · 02/01/2022 01:07

Oh OP, just seen your update, the pacing and crouching over was like me too, I was doubled over the bed, on all fours trying to get comfortable, a bit like early labour.

bobkate · 02/01/2022 01:13

The gp did say she thought she could rule out appendicitis as her tummy wasn't guarded at all, nice and soft I think she said. She used the stethoscope to listen and said it was gurgling away. The pain hasn't moved at all, consistently central and above her tummy button.
I think she may have dropped off. I went it and told her to sip her water from now on and she was almost there sleep wise so I'll keep my fingers crossed she can get some rest.
Don't think I'll rest much. Really appreciate the replies, so thank you!

I really hope she has a good nights sleep and feels better in the morning.

EarringsandLipstick · 02/01/2022 01:15

It doesn't sound like appendicitis. It does sound like food poisoning which is just rotten and the pain is desperate.

I agree re water. Only little sips; even better that old reliable of flat 7-UP. Her tummy isn't able for water yet. Motilium can help but really with food poisoning, the body is trying to expel the contaminated product so best to let it run its course.

Hope DD feels better soon.

AliceMcK · 02/01/2022 01:16

Yes one person can get food poisoning while another dosnt. I have a very delicate tummy ( history of gastro & immune problems) I pick up the slightest bug in food. I have regularly gotten sick after eating the same meal as DH and others. Like anything different people have different tolerances. Also food poisoning can take different times to take effect. It may also not be food poisoning but a tummy bug she’s picked up somewhere.

I’m surprised that you were sent to a GP with vomiting for approx 12 hours as that’s no time at all for either food poisoning or tummy bug. Usually they would not want anyone else getting infected without good reason. I once took by 10 month old to hospital after days of vomiting and we were put straight into quarantine so as not to infect others.

My DDs and I recently had norovirus my DDs 7 & 4 we’re vomiting for about 48 hours on and off before they managed to keep anything solid down. For me it was 6 days but then took all 3 of us weeks to feel like normal.

You just have to keep her fluids up and ride it out.

Starcaller · 02/01/2022 01:19

We had a sickness bug recently and DD and I were sick hourly for about 24 hours (we got a few hours respite overnight but made up for it when we woke!) and couldn't keep liquids down. We both drank v diluted full sugar squash in tiny sips, and even though it came back up again very quickly, it was better that we had something to vomit up as otherwise it would have been sore and painful retching and acid.

It did get better quickly after the first 24 hours but it was very grim so I sympathise! We both had a sore stomach with it too but def keep an eye on the pain in case it worsens (and practice v good hygiene In case it's a bug - they are so contagious. DH managed to escape by using a diff bathroom and constant washing of hands and bleaching things).

bobkate · 02/01/2022 01:24

Thanks all, that's interesting to know that the same meal can affect people differently. So that definitely makes it quite likely it is food poisoning then, poor love.
Thanks for all your sympathies... and words of help. Also, that it can go on for quite a while. I'll be keeping a beady eye on her. Going to try to get some shut eye myself soon. I'll try to remember to update tomorrow. Thanks Flowers

Food poisoning is the most miserable I've ever felt - I was vomiting every 15 minutes for hours and hours, and the pain was horrendous. I'd rather have gallstones again. Your poor DD. Hope it passes soon. Buscopan is great - I think they also prescribed me an anti-emetic so it might be worth calling your GP if she's no better tomorrow.

immersivereader · 02/01/2022 02:03

Did she eat reheated rice?

bobkate · 02/01/2022 05:26

Currently sat downstairs with her dozing next to me. About 5 mins after my last post where I thought she had dropped off she shot up and was sick again....we tried dozing in her bed, gave up at about 3.30 so came down thinking we'd try to distract her with something on the telly.
She's dozing and has been, but very wiggly and unsettled, but no more vom since that last episode at 2..... not counting chickens yet. Just glad she's had a bit of respite for a while.
immersivereader unless the rice had been reheated at the curry house, then no.

Pepto Bismol should help.

Pepto Bismol should help.
That reminds me of my fave film... "take some pepto bismol, get dressed and come on over here...I'm tired of this stuff" Thanks, made me smile in a sleep deprived fashion Smile

It’s grim being up all night with sickness/pains whether you’re the patient or the Mum.

At least at your daughter’s age she can get it in the bucket! Remember when they were small and they’d just suddenly be sick anywhere?!

theneverendinglaundry · 02/01/2022 09:08

My first thought when I read this was appendicitis. My daughter was exactly the same when she had that. Started above the belly button and then moved to right hand side of her abdomen.

I hope she feels better soon x

theneverendinglaundry · 02/01/2022 09:13

I should also add that she was sick for an entire day before the pain moved to the right. It started at about 3am on a Sunday morning and I called 111 at 5am on a Monday morning as the pain had moved then.

We also thought it was food poisoning and I even complained to the restaurant Blushdo keep an eye on where that pain is.

PointeShoesandTutus · 02/01/2022 09:16

Poor thing. Food poisoning is wretched. When she starts to feel a tiny bit better it’s worth trying some still lucozade type isotonic drink as the vomiting will have stripped her of everything. Sip it very very slowly - I remember a 500ml bottle taking me all day to drink, but it did really help.
