Awful sickness and tummy ache...my poor DD

bobkate · 02/01/2022 00:40

So my poor DD, 14, woke late this morning and had bad tummy cramps. I originally thought it could be down to her period but she said it was above her belly button and different to any period pain she's had previously.
Got progressively worse and then she started being sick at about 5pm. Has been sick probably every half hour since, and the pain isn't letting up.
Called 111 at 6.30pm and after a triage they sent us for an out of hours gp appt at 9.45pm. She had a mild temperature before we left but noticeably cold hands I thought.
Told the gp everything, including that we'd had a takeaway curry last night but that both daughters shared a portion between them and my younger DD 2 is absolutely fine. She had a feel of her tummy which she said wasn't guarded. Tried a finger oxygen monitor but said her finger was too cold so couldn't get a reading.
So her diagnosis was that it was possibly food poisoning.
So my questions are...
If you share the same portion is it possible that one person can get food poisoning but the other doesn't?
If it is food poisoning how long will the cramps and vomiting last? She is really struggling now, she is drinking a fair bit as we've said that's the best way to clear out her tummy ( no idea if that's true but don't want her to get dehydrated ). She is literally vomiting lots of greeny, yellowy liquid.... bile I presume ( sorry if tmi ).
I have never had food poisoning so no idea how long this will go on for, or how long she can cope with so much vomit...it's been 7 hours so far Sad
Is there anything else I should be looking out for. No rashes of any kind and her temp is 37.4 at the mo.

Try and get her to take small sips of full fat lemonade

This will calm her stomach and rehydrate her.. it really works for me, when I was younger if I had thrown up I just couldn't seem to stop, until I found this trick

Drinkyourweaklemondrink · 02/01/2022 09:21

Bless her. It could also be novovirus. I started feeling unwell on the 30th With flushed cheeks and general exhaustion. Yesterday I woke at 4am and was vomiting for 12 hours.
I couldn't keep any water down and the bad stomach has been awful.
I really think it's novovirus and it's definitely doing the rounds hope your daughter is well soon

@immersivereader

Did she eat reheated rice?
I thought this too. You need to report the takeaway if you got it after eating from there

What about anything else she ate in the same day, including food from her own home?

Rivermonsters · 02/01/2022 10:27

I suffered from something like this last summer (replace the vomiting with diarrhea). The GP was crap as well, have you considered a private GI doctor?

Rivermonsters · 02/01/2022 10:29

Hope she’s ok op xx sending hugs over MN

Thanks all. She went up about 4.30 to bed and zonked out. I kept checking on her until about 6, then decided I could risk a few hours shut eye. I have just woken and she has had a shower and says she feels much better. My only main concern now is that she said the pain is much better, it's now "just a stitch type pain" and points to just to the right and slightly below the belly button. But she looks so much brighter!! The pain, she says, isn't awful. In fact it only hurts a lot when I put pressure on it.
Could that be muscle pain from all the vomiting, she says hopefully!!!

@bobkate is there any history of gallbladder issues in the family? The pain and pacing etc sound exactly like me when I had gallstones! And the pain afterwards felt almost like I’d been left bruised for a couple of days!
bobkate · 02/01/2022 11:01

My brother had gallstones and his gallbladder removed when he was 17. Similar circumstances I think, as in crippling pain and lots of vomit.
I must stop posting here I think Grin I keep posting too soon! She's just rushed up to be sick again. However, she's come down and still is feeling better than she was last night. Obvs going to keep a close eye.
WRT the takeaway. I have no proof that there was anything wrong with their food. DH, my other DD and I all shared and had the same food, as in I shared a rice with her, and her and her sister shared a portion of chicken curry. We've eaten in, and had takeaways from, a lot over the years and they've always had a great reputation. I may well still give the relevant authorities a call on tuesday, I suppose, just on the slim chance others had reported from the same night I guess.

Hmm, with this update it sounds less like food poisoning & a query appendicitis. I didn't think so last night & based on the doctor's obs.

I'd keep an eye on her & pain.

With food poisoning once the vomiting stops you feel absolutely exhausted & drained. But no pain / tenderness if you pressed the tummy.

Feeling brighter sounds less like food poisoning.

I guess keep an eye & certainly if a location-specific pain continues, bring her back to get checked out. I hope you have got some rest too. 💐

@bobkate I hope she’s feeling much better by now OP! Hopefully it is just a nasty case of FP and she’s on the mend but as @EarringsandLipstick has said, I’d keep an eye on the tenderness!
bobkate · 02/01/2022 19:26

Thank you both. I think if the pain is still there tomorrow we'll try for a check up of some kind somewhere. She's still sipping liquid, got her some lemonade earlier. Looked for some rehydration sachets but no joy.
She's also running a temp of 38.1....poor thing is trying to stay upbeat as best she can. Her phone is still being ignored so she must still be feeling pants.
She's rested and slept on and off most of the day. We'll see how we go tonight and when she wakes.

Was there chicken in the takeaway? Undercooked chicken can cause very nasty food poisoning .

edwinbear · 02/01/2022 19:45

OP I've been checking in on the thread all day to see how you are both getting on. I'm really pleased to hear she's feeling better in herself, but I would still be keeping an eye on pain that's moved over to the right, particularly so if it hurts when you press it. I'm sure you've googled many times, but I'll just post this from the NHS website to be sure. Hope you both manage some sleep tonight Smile

Yes there was but she shared a portion with her sister and so I had presumed, before others up thread informed me otherwise, that they both would have been poorly. Maybe she just got a dud piece which would be just shitty bad luck! But we'll never know for sure if that's what it is I suppose.

Did the doctor do a dipstick test on her urine? Her symptoms sound exactly like my DD’s when she gets a UTI. The first time it happened, I was terrified and thought it was appendicitis (she was only 4 at the time). I keep a jar of dipaticks at home now so I can figure out quickly if it’s a UTI.

bobkate · 02/01/2022 20:25

edwinbear Flowers Thank you so much. Yes I have been quietly watching for appendicitis symptoms.. she is keeping me second guessing everything though as the pain she says has really reduced, but I have remaining niggles that I'm just keeping an eye on. She mentioned the pain is greater when she shifts position, or when walking. I noticed earlier that she was moving quite gingerly. Also the temperature appeared today.
All of which could be explained away by other things, tummy muscles sore from so much vomiting, temperature due to food poisoning, but I will be keeping a close eye for sure.
rainallnight my dd did do a sample but bless her, she was really embarrassed as it had some period blood in there as well so was unusable. ( that's a whole new question...how on earth do you get a good sample if you don't wear tampons? ) I had no idea you could get home dip sticks though so that's another new bit of info for me Smile

EarringsandLipstick · 02/01/2022 20:47

OP, you won't have a temperature with food poisoning.

The more you update, the more it sounds less like food poisoning & more like a gastro bug or possibly appendicitis / UTI.

Hopefully it'll become clearer over time.

Rainallnight · 02/01/2022 20:52

Oh bless her. You can get the sticks from Amazon - they’re called Multistix and you just have to do a bit of Googling to find out how to read them. Your GP would still need to diagnose and possibly send off a sample to be cultured but it can give you some peace of mind at home.

DD doesn’t get any burning on urination or anything - it took me a while to believe her symptoms could be a UTI.

I’m not quite sure what you’d do about the blood. Could she manage a tampon for a little while just to get a sample?

bobkate · 02/01/2022 20:54

Aha! See I didn't know that re temp and food poisoning. Would a uti cause such extreme vomiting though?

Sounds Appendicitis like to me. Mine was last year, never vomited but pain worse on walking, right hand side of abdomen was very much how it appeared. I did have the classic "rebound" pain though and a bloated abdomen.

Certainly worth getting another Dr to have a look - mine wasn't that bad when they hoiked it out, might have just been a grumbling one but it was summer so better dealt with then. I did have a slight temperature so had to be treated as possible covid until negative swab.

imreallycartman · 02/01/2022 21:00

I was like this about 12 years ago with norovirus, I had a week of going between vomiting and feeling like death, then I'd perk up for a while, then it would hit again.
The pain was horrendous & they admitted me to hospital thinking it was gallstones after a week of it, but it wasn't, the norovirus had caused me to develop a nasty acid reflux

imreallycartman · 02/01/2022 21:00

How she is better soon

bobkate · 02/01/2022 21:09

I swear I am not drip feeding on purpose, despite it feeling like I am!! but she's just come out the loo saying it hurts when she wees ( this is where I want a hand face plant emoji Hmm ). I said when did that start and she said earlier today Confused So now I am thinking maybe it's a uti/kidney infection....I have no idea if that's something that can wait to be sorted until the morning...
Again, I can't even recall if I've ever had a significant uti so no idea if it's something that needs sorting asap as in call 111 back now or call them in the morning. I feel a bit rubbish not knowing. Google is not helping much.
I don't think I've ever posted this much Grin

My daughter was very sick 2w ago - and it was appendicitis. She has had an awful time since. We used the NHS 111 website before deciding what to do next. Might be worth you going through this? Best of luck x
