Awful sickness and tummy ache...my poor DD

So my poor DD, 14, woke late this morning and had bad tummy cramps. I originally thought it could be down to her period but she said it was above her belly button and different to any period pain she's had previously.
Got progressively worse and then she started being sick at about 5pm. Has been sick probably every half hour since, and the pain isn't letting up.
Called 111 at 6.30pm and after a triage they sent us for an out of hours gp appt at 9.45pm. She had a mild temperature before we left but noticeably cold hands I thought.
Told the gp everything, including that we'd had a takeaway curry last night but that both daughters shared a portion between them and my younger DD 2 is absolutely fine. She had a feel of her tummy which she said wasn't guarded. Tried a finger oxygen monitor but said her finger was too cold so couldn't get a reading.
So her diagnosis was that it was possibly food poisoning.
So my questions are...
If you share the same portion is it possible that one person can get food poisoning but the other doesn't?
If it is food poisoning how long will the cramps and vomiting last? She is really struggling now, she is drinking a fair bit as we've said that's the best way to clear out her tummy ( no idea if that's true but don't want her to get dehydrated ). She is literally vomiting lots of greeny, yellowy liquid.... bile I presume ( sorry if tmi ).
I have never had food poisoning so no idea how long this will go on for, or how long she can cope with so much vomit...it's been 7 hours so far Sad
Is there anything else I should be looking out for. No rashes of any kind and her temp is 37.4 at the mo.

@Dilbertian

A tip if the cannula is uncomfortable. When my dd was receiving IV antibiotics, the cannula was first sited in her elbow. It didn't bother her for the first dose, but by the next dose (2am!) it was hurting a lot and the alarm kept going off on the pump device because it was getting blocked. They re-sited it in her wrist, which sounds weird, but it was comfortable and did not bother her at all. She was even able to attend school with it in place. Since then, whenever she has had to have a cannula, she requests straight off to have it inserted in her wrist.

Hope this gets resolved soon for your dd.

Thank you, the canula is on her hand so not too bad at the mo.

Just waiting for the doc rounds.
DD says she feels okay. She was sick at 10pm. Had her iv antibiotics at half 12, which lasted through to about 2.15ish. She was also sick at 2. The nurse gave her some anti sickness meds and then put her on a bag of fluid.
The beeps haven't been too bad to be honest.
So she's back to nil by mouth until we see the drs.

Flowers hope you don't have too long to wait. If she is having surgery, do ask about the timings - when is she booked in for, how long will surgery be, likely recovery time before being back on the ward.

She's in theatre. They are also going to check the ovary whilst in there. I am finally having something to eat and drink so feeling a tad better. Just the awful waiting bit now Sad

Handhold here. She’ll be in recovery before you know it Flowers

Thanks. In all the 14 odd years I don't think I have ever posted as much GrinGrin

OP the wait must be awful, I do hope it all goes smoothly. She'll be tired and sore for a few days but will feel so much better once recovered - and won't need to worry about her appendix again! Pleased to hear you are getting something to eat yourself as well and really hope it's a short wait Flowers

Blueuxbridge · 04/01/2022 12:51

Waiting in hospitals with ill kids is just plain horrible. Cake helps.

QS888 · 04/01/2022 12:58

Wine this is probably what you need now, but I doubt that the hospital cafe will have any! The waiting is absolutely the worst part. Thinking lots about you both x

QuestionableMouse · 04/01/2022 13:01

Ah sorry op, I s rough when they're not well.

From your first post, I thought appendicitis; my little nephew had much the same symptoms. His op went very smoothly and even though he spent a week in hospital (he's only five) he made a full recovery and is back to his usual self!

I have stocked on percy pig sweets, m and s cookies and had a hot chocolate. A friend kindly dropped us up a few bits from home so I can finally escape out of my jeans. I picked the right slouchy jumper to wear yesterday, but the wrong bottom halves. Jeans are not made for hospital loitering Grin
She's still down there.

We did before coming to a and e, and they repeated the test before admitting us. Negative testing. She is in theatre now.

Oh gosh you poor thing. I had lost this thread and have been wondering how she's doing.

Hope she's out and on the mend very soon

changingstages · 04/01/2022 14:23

Poor her, poor you - I hope she's out very soon and recovering quickly. You'll need a big glass of wine and a good night sleep too.

EarringsandLipstick · 04/01/2022 14:32

Ah OP, you've all had a rough few days. I'm glad she's in theatre now, even tho I know it's miserable to be in hospital.

@bobkate Glad you’re a bit more comfy Flowers you’re right, jeans are absolutely not the right choice 🤣 So glad you followed your instincts and took her to get checked out! She’ll be out of theatre before you know it! Hopefully recovery will be quick and straight forward for her 😊 I think a few days of ice cream and movies on the couch are needed for you both when you get home!

Let us know how she is when you get the chance Flowers

theneverendinglaundry · 04/01/2022 14:44

The wait is awful and it is weird seeing them all groggy when they come round from the anaesthetic. My DDs teeth were chattering for a day afterwards.

But she will feel much better when she wakes! You'll both be home soon x

itwasntaparty · 04/01/2022 14:47

Oh goodness, hope she is in the mend soon and we'll done you for trusting your instinct to take her to a and e.

Holothane · 04/01/2022 15:02

Hugs she’s in the best hands she’ll be -it soon and on the way to recovery

bobkate · 04/01/2022 15:06

She's out, minus appendix and according to her a specimen to do with her ovary has been taken to be sent somewhere.
Will find out more when we see the docs but she's out, smiling and very happy it's over. Thanks all x

Great news and lots of Flowers and Wine and Gin and Cake for you and your daughter for an easy recovery and good results on the specimen. Hopefully all done as keyhole which will make recovery much easier xx Thanks for the updates xx

Innocenta · 04/01/2022 15:27

Poor little thing, glad the op is over and she's through it! Hope she feels more like herself ASAP Thanks

Blueuxbridge · 04/01/2022 15:33

Thanks for the update OP. Hopefully you’ll both be home tomorrow.
