Awful sickness and tummy ache...my poor DD

bobkate · 02/01/2022 00:40

So my poor DD, 14, woke late this morning and had bad tummy cramps. I originally thought it could be down to her period but she said it was above her belly button and different to any period pain she's had previously.
Got progressively worse and then she started being sick at about 5pm. Has been sick probably every half hour since, and the pain isn't letting up.
Called 111 at 6.30pm and after a triage they sent us for an out of hours gp appt at 9.45pm. She had a mild temperature before we left but noticeably cold hands I thought.
Told the gp everything, including that we'd had a takeaway curry last night but that both daughters shared a portion between them and my younger DD 2 is absolutely fine. She had a feel of her tummy which she said wasn't guarded. Tried a finger oxygen monitor but said her finger was too cold so couldn't get a reading.
So her diagnosis was that it was possibly food poisoning.
So my questions are...
If you share the same portion is it possible that one person can get food poisoning but the other doesn't?
If it is food poisoning how long will the cramps and vomiting last? She is really struggling now, she is drinking a fair bit as we've said that's the best way to clear out her tummy ( no idea if that's true but don't want her to get dehydrated ). She is literally vomiting lots of greeny, yellowy liquid.... bile I presume ( sorry if tmi ).
I have never had food poisoning so no idea how long this will go on for, or how long she can cope with so much vomit...it's been 7 hours so far Sad
Is there anything else I should be looking out for. No rashes of any kind and her temp is 37.4 at the mo.

I'm not sure re they extreme vomiting & UTI OP.

It's definitely possible to have sickness with a UTI tho I don't I know if I've heard of someone being so sick.

I think I'd be following up tomorrow, depending on how DD is by then. Poor thing.

@QS888

My daughter was very sick 2w ago - and it was appendicitis. She has had an awful time since. We used the NHS 111 website before deciding what to do next. Might be worth you going through this? Best of luck x
Did her sickness continue or did it ease off? I keep veering between what I think it could be. It's slightly infuriating for me, let alone for anyone who stumbles on this thread! If it weren't the weekend/bank holiday I probably would be less dithery about what to do as I'd just call the gp! She's sound asleep now and settled it seems so I think, unless she wakes in further pain, I'll leave it until the morning and call 111 then. Thanks for all the comments. They are appreciated Flowers

Just wanted to say that aside from the vomiting spell being shorter my son has been almost the same. Threw up Christmas Day night a lot - had a fever but freezing cold hands. Then sore throat and snotty nose then earache. He's now on antibiotics for suspected ear infection but we were told to Covid test too. It was negative and he's way better. In fact was better by 30th but it was so odd and came in waves. I hope she's soon better. Poor thing. Deffo ring GP again if still sick and in pain. And ask if they can test the pee. Poor thing. She sounds like a trooper though and you sound lovely

How is she? Hoping it’s not appendicitis, hugs.

QS888 · 02/01/2022 21:39

Hi - she was so sick all day Saturday, and then there was basically nothing left in her to be sick. She lay on the couch most of Sunday which is when the pain came. If you have any doubt - A&E or 111.

MamaBearThius · 02/01/2022 21:56

It might hurt to wee because she's dehydrated from all the throwing up? This also sounds similar to me when I had appendicitis...hope she's okay

bobkate · 02/01/2022 22:03

Thanks all. I will definitely be calling 111 tomorrow. Or tonight if needs be.
She has been a trooper. I did tell her she was a wally for not telling me earlier it made her pain worse when she had a wee but she's so rarely ill fortunately so I guess it's a learning curve.
Oh and we're doing daily lfts just in case.

Oh gawd Grin Honestly I am literally swinging all over the place between food poisoning, appendicitis, uti.
I think there's no doubt I'll be calling 111 first thing to try to get this sorted once and for all!!

Would bet on a kidney stone op, making its way down. I had exactly the same symptoms with mine.

Not to alarm you but mine never passed so if the pain with urination doesn't settle make sure she gets a scan

babysleephelp · 02/01/2022 22:08

Or at very least a urine test

ShirleyPhallus · 02/01/2022 22:13

Just to say that if I have a day of vomiting (either a bug or a hangover in my younger days!) I would often get a UTI, from being so dehydrated that nothing passed through

The two things may not be related but one caused the other

Hope she feels better soon

Righto, that makes sense, thank you...we have been trying to keep her fluid intake up but it's probably not been enough.
OP posts:
Mischance · 02/01/2022 22:40

Her urine is likely to be quite concentrated at this stage because of trouble keeping fluid down - this might make it uncomfortable to wee.

Try ice lollies - good way of getting fluid down in a gentle slow way.

littlebilliie · 02/01/2022 22:44

Also try warm water through a straw it's easier to get larger quantities down if it's warm. I had food poisoning as child and I know it's very unpleasant

emsmar · 02/01/2022 22:45

Sounds like the norovirus my dc had. I managed to escape it! Was grim for a few days.

Thanks...good tip re the lollies.

How is she feeling today OP?

bobkate · 03/01/2022 09:44

@edwinbear

How is she feeling today OP?
I've actually brought her to a and e. I felt slightly wrong bringing her as I don't think it's an emergency as such but her temp was up all night and pain the same levels this morning. Triage nurse was very nice and said we were ok to come. Given her some rehydration stuff whilst we wait for the doc and some paracetamol. Will update later when home.

Don't feel bad OP - you have definitely done the right thing.

I really hope she is okay, please keep us updated x

mommybear1 · 03/01/2022 09:59

Hope she is ok OP and seen quickly Thanks

Greys007 · 03/01/2022 10:00

Agree with @theneverendinglaundry - you’ve definitely done the right thing in taking her to A&E! Especially with not knowing what’s causing the pain and her temp being raised! Hopefully it won’t be long before they get to the bottom of it 🤞🏼
Let us know how she gets on!

edwinbear · 03/01/2022 10:22

You’ve absolutely done the right thing. She’s had severe abdominal pain since Sat and it’s not improving. If it is appendicitis, it is very much an emergency and if it isn’t, she still needs a diagnosis, pain relief and a treatment plan. I hope they don’t keep you waiting too long.

clarepetal · 03/01/2022 10:36

You poor things. I hope she is feeling better and the docs can diagnose what the problem is soon.

Mischance · 03/01/2022 10:56

Better safe than sorry. Hope the doc can help.

Polmuggle · 03/01/2022 11:13

Can I just say - you absolutely can have a temp with food poisoning! I had a bad bout (tested and confirmed as bacterial by gp) 2 months ago which lasted 10 days! Temp up and down throughout.
