I use mine for music / radio

The news sometimes.

Please share what you use yours for? I'd love to get more out of it!

Ours is linked to the hue lights and the hive so we use it mostly for those. I also use for weather updates and music. That’s about it really.
Kids like it because it’ll tell you jokes if you ask it and it has a fun Christmas countdown as well.

Zireael · 01/01/2022 22:48

Fact of the day

Zireael · 01/01/2022 22:49

If struggling to sleep, I ask her to play 30 minutes of spa music - works every time

Techno56 · 01/01/2022 22:49

To turn lamps on and off with smart switches
To play relaxing sleep sounds in my son's room at night
Music
Timers/reminders
And I use the drop in function all the time to stop me needing to shout up the stairs when my teenage son is in his room with the door shut ...you can even drop in using the app on your phone which is really handy if I need to check he's ok or remind him to do something while I'm out at work.

MyPatronusIsASnowman · 01/01/2022 22:50

I use mine to announce breakfast/lunch/dinner is ready as I normally have younger DC in his high chair and he can't be trusted not to fling himself backwards so I don't have to leave him.

To be honest it's made us really lazy and we quite often drop in on older DSs bedroom rather than walking up the stairs although again it means not leaving younger DC alone

We have routines set for her to turn smart plugs on/off and also one in DSs bedroom set for school days, she tells him a joke then time for school tick tock then turns his main light off Xmas Grin

Shopping list - we all add to it as we go. Even ds (9)

Ds for amazon storytime
Me and ds both for audible

MyPatronusIsASnowman · 01/01/2022 22:52

Oh and we are currently trialling using the shopping list function as I can access it from the shop if I forget to make a note and there are certain shops I would only buy certain items. Quite handy to yell at her to add something to the shopping list in the middle of cooking

ChoccySprinkles · 01/01/2022 22:52

I’ve got routines I think are called.

‘Alexa help me sleep’ turns off my bedside lamp and plays rain sounds with a 45 minute sleep timer.

‘Alexa good morning’ turns my lamp on, tells me the time and plays radio 2

I use smart plugs everywhere too which is helpful. Tomorrow I’m going to set up my SAD lamp to go on 30 minutes before my alarm.

Outside Christmas lights are on a timer.

I want to get more fancy Alexa bits but I don’t know what else to get! I would get a kettle but we are getting a kettle tap soon

ThirdElephant · 01/01/2022 22:53

She'll have a bash at answering any random question that pops into your head. Recently, I've asked mine how many minutes for a soft-boiled egg, when Chinese New Year falls in 2022 and when women got the vote.

You can also ask her to add stuff to your shopping list and then you can see and tick things off the list in the Alexa app.

AppleKatie · 01/01/2022 22:54

Turning on and off lights inc the Christmas tree ones has improved my Christmas no end!

Radio.
Play music from my phone (Bluetooth)
Alarms when I'm cooking.
Turning off lights and tv (using smart plugs).
Info on Amazon orders.
I do a lot off bread making and she calculates weights for me. (I used to use my phone, but my hands are sticky with dough)!
Love my Alexas, wouldn't be without them!
😁

Workyticket · 01/01/2022 22:58

We use it to drop in on each other too - put ds to bed earlier. We chatted and read then I said he could have 20 minutes with his book. Dropped in to remind him and say goodnight again

We've started to let ds stay home when we nip to tesco and I call the Alexa in the back room where he sits to check in on him / he calls me to ask for sweets!

Ds and his pals ask her to fart. A lot 🙈

Adventsquirrel · 01/01/2022 22:59

•Shopping list
•To do list
•Asking my children to do things because they actually listen to her but not me Grin
•Asking her to play me music I'll like
•Reminders for things like putting bins out etc
•Podcasts
•Translating phrases into different languages (my 5yo loves this)

SummerOfComedy · 01/01/2022 22:59

Oooh, forgot! Turn on/off the central heating.

Dc love talking to Alexa at Christmas and listening to Santa

Datsandcogs · 01/01/2022 23:01

Alarms
Timers (love the link to the Alexa clock)
Intercom
Announcements
Reminders (set for all the cooking timings and reminders on Christmas Day and stopped me clock watching!)
Control plugs (brilliant for Christmas tree lights!)
For listening to the radio, music and audio books
As a calculator/searching the internet
Also linked to smart cameras (and Ring doorbell when I get it installed!)
Checking the time

In other words . . . many, many things!

Plumedenom · 01/01/2022 23:01

I have her telling us on weekdays when kids need to finish breakfast and at which time they need to get on their shoes. They seem to be more convinced when she says it!
Linked it to my TV tonight and it was showing me this sound show which goes with the music. Quite therapeutic.
My daughter uses it to get her dancing music on because she is five and can't type yet.
The drop in function can be used even between households but it freaks me out.

Bunbunbunny · 01/01/2022 23:03

Timers
Light control
Playing Pointless
Normal swear at it once a week

gogohm · 01/01/2022 23:04

@Zireael

Ooh - spa music! Will have to try this!

We use it for shopping lists, turning on/off smart plugs and I've got a morning routine set up where it tells me what the weather is like and how my commute looks

We use the music a reasonable amount but not necessarily on the alexa's.

I wish it connected to our smart cat flap (sure) though as it would be so much simpler to ask if the cats were in or out.

MyPatronusIsASnowman · 01/01/2022 23:15

Haha just saw this on FB, if only!

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 01/01/2022 23:18
