Or will it wash your luck away?

Definitely not- no washing on New Year's Day!

crochetmylifeaway · 01/01/2022 09:27

Yup. I did the kids beds yesterday but didn't have time for mine. So looking forward to getting home tonight after going to the in-laws and getting into clean pjs and a fresh clean bed

Blupblup · 01/01/2022 09:33

@badlydrawnbear

I have never heard that before, but, yes, because DC1 tidied her bedroom yesterday and filled an entire washing basket when I already had a basket full from being away for a few days over Christmas. DC1 seems to have put all her school uniform in the wash despite obviously not wearing it since it was last washed, so I have to wash it ready for next week.
I heard this as an adult from my Sil, but it's clearly a load of superstitious bollocks so I wash things as normal. Intrigued why you are rewashing school uniform even though you know it's not dirty though @badlydrawnbear? If my DC put clean things in the wash they just get sent straight back up.
BeLessMe · 01/01/2022 09:39

I’ve never heard of this.

My machine is currently on. It’s a lovely warm windy day and I’ve a mountain of bedding to wash.

AmyTongs · 01/01/2022 09:39

Apart from Christmas Day and Boxing Day (when everything is mayhem) we wash any day when there's a load ready (both line dry and tumble dry options here, depending on the weather).

I wasn't aware of the saying; it reminds me of my lovely grandma and her superstitions, bless her.

LowlandLucky · 01/01/2022 10:00

Far to windy to hang washing out here but i wouldn't anyway, here in my corner of Scotland it is not the done thing.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 01/01/2022 10:01

First load of the day on.
My mum would never have anything in the ironing basket for new year. (I don’t now because I don’t iron)

meteoric · 01/01/2022 10:14

Yeah I agree that some harassed mums in years gone by came up with this.

I aways imagine that old religious rules (such as "no sex on or after your period" and "no work on the lords day") were also women subtly pushing for time off from too.

catwomandoo · 01/01/2022 10:15

Is this a thing? If so, bugger as I've just put a load on

Gilead · 01/01/2022 10:32

My stoma decided to leak this morning, I’m definitely doing washing!

Wecando · 01/01/2022 10:33

Oh I've never heard of this.

No I won't do any washing ...

TheCanyon · 01/01/2022 10:38

The dogs crate blanket is currently on a wash. Otherwise the baskets pretty empty for once thankfully.

Busybee5000 · 01/01/2022 10:39

No not today, Mum always taught me the superstition and I try to stick to it!! But when the children were younger it wasn't always possible. I'd say my luck has remained similar every year regardless so not sure it makes any difference Grin

tiddledpink · 01/01/2022 10:47

no, but only because I managed to get caught up over Christmas.
bedding all stripped and washed last night so out drying this morning.

If I has enough to stick a load on though I would.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 01/01/2022 10:53

No. You’ll wash someone’ out of your life. Apparently 🤷‍♀️

HighlandCowbag · 01/01/2022 11:00

Mine is on. I usually don't, mainly because we have family and friends for nyd dinner and I'm usually up to my eyeballs in doing a Christmas dinner for 14 people. But covid got us so just a normal roast so might as well do some washing.

Am fucking bored senseless and only half way through my isolation period so I might as well keep on top of everything.

Iwantacampervan · 01/01/2022 11:03

I'm not doing any washing today - weirdly one of the only superstitions I adhere to (one of the others is single magpies). My grandmother was adamant that washing was not to be done on New Years Day.

Sideorderofchips · 01/01/2022 11:06

I haven't but the superstition here is you will wash someone out of your life if you do

Wishihadanalgorithm · 01/01/2022 11:06

“I never wash on New Year’s Day as I could wash someone’s life away.”

I did everything yesterday including Ben linen so when we went to bed at about 1am (New Year’s day) we started off the new year with clean beds.

We do cook and wash up today but I’m kind of the belief that whatever I do NY say is what I will spend all the year doing so cooking is fine as I enjoy that but no other work.

firstimemamma · 01/01/2022 11:07

I've never heard of that phrase before! Second load of the day is on now!

BlueBell50 · 01/01/2022 11:10

Oh dear, never heard of this before. Perhaps this is where I’ve been going wrong all these years. Washer currently on and another two piles ready to go in.

ExtremelyDetermined · 01/01/2022 11:11

Bed linen is the main thing I want to do today, already done throws off the sofa and got a load of clothes in. It has turned bright and breezy here today, so it can go on the line after all.

LouLou198 · 01/01/2022 11:16

No! Did it all yesterday. I think we need all the luck we can get at the moment!

SmaugMum · 01/01/2022 11:17

@stairgates

Same saying here 'you will wash someone away' so I say a name as I switch the machine on incase Im lucky😄
Gosh, I’d have to toss a coin to decide between my two DDs.
JamMakingWannaBe · 01/01/2022 11:18

Are you allowed to have a shower / bath?

I know the one about having your cupboards full on NYD but we have been visiting relatives for the whole festive period so our fridge at home is empty!
