Or will it wash your luck away?

OP posts:
ineedsun · 01/01/2022 08:49

In our house it’s not luck but a member of the family that you wash away, so absolutely not!

AuntieMarys · 01/01/2022 08:51

Do people actually believe this?

TheGirlWhoLived · 01/01/2022 08:51

I need to do a load of washing but I never have in the past… so I might leave it and hope I don’t upset the equilibrium!

AndStand · 01/01/2022 08:51

My mother is also horrified that I do laundry on New Year's Day. I'm not superstitious so I make sure I do it just to make a point.

ineedsun · 01/01/2022 08:53

@AuntieMarys

Do people actually believe this?
Of course not but with the way the last few years have gone I’m not risking anything.
MajesticElephant · 01/01/2022 08:54

Never heard of this either. Just stuck a load of stuff that can’t go in the dryer in as I’ve been inspired by pp who said it was a perfect line drying day!

ExtremelyDetermined · 01/01/2022 08:55

Yes of course I will, I don't let superstitions stop me doing everyday stuff. Today is just a normal Saturday here.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/01/2022 08:56

No. Everything will have to wait until tomorrow.

stairgates · 01/01/2022 08:56

Same saying here 'you will wash someone away' so I say a name as I switch the machine on incase Im lucky😄

LavenderAskew · 01/01/2022 08:59

Not just clothes, you can't wash or clean anything. So no sweeping or cleaning dishes either.

You needed to have filled your cupboards yesterday and make a big meal today (but not with chicken) and you can't leave the house until someone comes in. (Hopeful someone will arrive, otherwise you'll have to hang around looking at all the dirty dishes from the big meal.)

You also should have opened your doors at midnight.

There's probably more things but so many of you have already doomed 2022 that it doesnt matter really.

Roselilly36 · 01/01/2022 09:00

I have heard of it, my washing is on, as I type. And more than likely was the year before & the year before that.

stingofthebutterfly · 01/01/2022 09:00

Never even heard of that. My washing basket is overflowing so yeah, I will, but fortunately I'm not superstitious.

Heruka · 01/01/2022 09:02

I’ve never heard of it. And amazed that somewhere in the country people are able to hang washing out!! I have a backlog since Xmas so will defo be laundering today.

MrsMorningStarOfBethleh · 01/01/2022 09:03

Yes same here.
Angel2702 · 01/01/2022 09:05

Yes have everyone’s bedding to wash as well as a normal load, absolutely no point on letting it build up causing a backlog for superstitious reasons.

onedayoranother · 01/01/2022 09:06

I haven't done any last couple days so just might.

ExtremelyDetermined · 01/01/2022 09:06

Didn't open doors last night as didn't want cats getting out during fireworks. Won't be waiting for anyone to come in before going out and definitely will be cleaning.

BeyondMyWits · 01/01/2022 09:07

Is this just for people who follow the Gregorian calendar or does it apply to the rest of the world too. Is it a nominal "New Year" thing ... or an actual day... Is it bad luck for those who follow the Chinese calendar to do their washing on Chinese New year or Gregorian new year... etc...

My mother lived constrained by many, many rules governed by superstition, I decided not to.

ExtremelyDetermined · 01/01/2022 09:08

Also jealous of anyone who can hang washing out, it's been at least a fortnight since we had a dry day here.

minisoksmakehardwork · 01/01/2022 09:09

I generally try not to as 'tradition'. I'm also not superstitious normally but My MIL cautions against washing on NY day as she says it 'washes a soul away'. last year and the year before we did do washing on NY day and I lost a parent each of those years.

This year I have no desire to feel responsible for killing one of my lovely in laws so we won't be putting washing on.

Even though my rational side says it's just superstition, my mistrustful side just doesn't want to risk it.

veiledsentiments · 01/01/2022 09:11

Two loads on the line already.

WoWsers16 · 01/01/2022 09:13

My boy has been sick so he's a load already done this morning!

WoWsers16 · 01/01/2022 09:13

So yes a load*

OwlIceCrem · 01/01/2022 09:13

Washing what? I’ve never heard of this. I washed a load yesterday but it’s currently sitting in the machine waiting to be sorted… does that count?

Can you wash your face?

RuthW · 01/01/2022 09:15

Absolutely no washing to be done here
