What have you accidentally thrown away?

I feel so upset. My dad made a little Christmas hamper for my toddlers, with things like the Organix snacks in. Some of it was opened so they could eat it, and DH mistook the paper bag it was in for recycling Sad

Totally not the end of the world as it was only a few snacks, but I feel so guilty because of the thought and care that had gone into choosing the bits. Also the fact that it wasn't mine but my children's. He is usually obsessive about sorting through the recycling too, I have no idea why he just dumped the whole bag!

So make me feel better Mumsnet. What have you thrown away by accident?

My DH's watch Confused I still maintain he should have put it away. I swept it up amongst some papers for the recycling, and luckily realised when I heard a thunk as it landed in the bottom of the bag. Oops!

Have you seen the story about the guy who dumped £m’s worth of bitcoin? www.cnbc.com/amp/2021/01/15/uk-man-makes-last-ditch-effort-to-recover-lost-bitcoin-hard-drive.html

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve thrown my bank card in the bin then had to go down the wheelie bin to get it back 🤢

endofagain · 29/12/2021 13:09

DH threw away a large cheque, luckily into the recycling, I found it. Actually he has done that a couple of times. I have to be vigilant.

A beautiful pure-silver ceremonial cup that was given to us as a wedding present from my husband's great uncle. It had been through the Holocaust, FFS. I accidentally threw it away in an overzealous spring clean Confused I have plead absolute ignorance to my husband, and he thinks it just went missing in a house move.

pinkcattydude · 29/12/2021 13:11

My husband threw away Luke Goss’ signature. It was one of the few things my Dad had ever got me. Very traditional dad left all the presents and gifts to mum. I Was so happy he recognised him and asked for it for me - it was when Bros were famous.

So many things
Worst/most expensive was when we were moving house and had a whole black sack of DDs Christmas presents. In a case of two many cooks spoiling the broth, the bag got out with tip run stuff and dumped.
Got to new house, looked for the bag, realised and was miffed. Suffice to say I've always put labels on stuff since.

Recently, not as expensive (although I've not checked yet) I have a very expensive mixer, comes with two mixing bowls and had a plastic lid for covering the bowls when proving bread or storing stuff.
I've been watching Stacey Solomon's program and one week she showed how many plastic tubs and lids we all accumulate. So I went through the overflowing drawer and chucked loads away if they were old or had no lid or no base.
Managed to mix the mixer lid up with the lid off an old tub and chucked it. So annoying!

My DS’s Amazon voucher he got this Christmas must have gone out with the recycling. I will have to replace it.
Not as bad as my DH who through out our marriage certificate the day we got married, thankfully we found it but it’s now covered in teabag stains.

Notgettingbetter · 29/12/2021 13:12

I put my passport in the outside recycling bin. Luckily I realised later and was able to retrieve it.

WotsitMum · 29/12/2021 13:14

A ring from my great grandmother😔 i took it off and put it in the pocket of the bag i brought to hospital full of snacks when i was in labour, when i got home we put the bag down and forgot it was full of snacks, we found it a few weeks later stinking and somthing leaked, chucked the whole bag out forgetting i put the ring in it and didnt remember till weeks later, by that point it was too late😔

@FuzzyPenguin

Just wondering with that if you might be able to go on the Amazon site and void it and get a refund and then get a new one as it will have a serial number so can prove that it isn't alrrasy used? Might be worth looking into.

I once threw away 700€ the night before we went on holiday. I mistook the little envelope the travel sent them in for a piece of junk mail. Fortunately I realised and managed to fish them out of the recycling bin in time but it was a very stressful few hours wondering where they had gone

seperatedmum · 29/12/2021 13:20

I've blocked out a lot of nice things I've thrown out BUT ACTUALLY yesterday STBXH gave me a tenner which hadn't been spent by the younger 2, I put it down my bra aiming to put it in little safe later, couldn't find it anywhere until I took out the recycling this morning which was DD13's job and it was underneath the container/indoor bin thing! but I've got loads about things I actually did throw out 🙊

steppemum · 29/12/2021 13:25

a few years ago my dd spent hours sewing a little needle case for her Granny. It was given at a big family christmas day with loads of people and presents, at my brother's house.

Once everyone got home, my mum couldn't find it, and we are 99% certain it got scooped up with the wrapping paper

The recycling had not been collected and my brother says he couldn't find it, but I know he didn;t go through the bag of recycling to look for it, that would be too much trouble. Sad

DH threw my wedding dress away. It was stored in a duvet cover in the loft and he threw it away thinking it was just an old duvet cover!

Buytoomuchonebay · 29/12/2021 13:29

The base of our very expensive Christmas tree
It was the part that not only did it sit on,it was the bit that plugged the tree into the mains and made the tips light up

Dp chucked our back door keys out by mistake

travellingturtle · 29/12/2021 13:47

$400 in cash.

It must have fallen out of my wallet into the bottom of my bag.

I grabbed all the scrap paper / receipts / mint wrappers / money at the bottom of my bag and chucked it into the wastepaper basket of the hotel room on my way out the door.

That chambermaid got a hell of a tip!

smallandimperfectlyformed · 29/12/2021 13:54

Some of these are really sad, I'm sorry to you EishetChayil, steppemum and WotsitMum. I once accidentally threw my really nicely prepared packed lunch for work into the huge recycling bin outside my block of flats and had to get a Tesco's meal deal instead!!

Thatsplentyjack · 29/12/2021 13:56

So many things. The latest I suspect might be my bank card and driving licence. They've both been gone for weeks/months now.

Luredbyapomegranate · 29/12/2021 14:03

A Pearl necklace Shock

5thHelena · 29/12/2021 14:07

A really sweet vintage brooch made of a little set of garnets on a long pin. I think it's been chucked out with other bits as it's so small and delicate and I've turned the house upside down many times and it's nowhere to be seen 😞

Viostep · 29/12/2021 14:12

I threw away my engagement ring accidentally while tidying. Gutted!

cloudchaos · 29/12/2021 14:16

Diamond earrings. I got the boxes mixed up and thought it was empty and would usually check. This was one of the only times I didn't check. Still devastated about it.

PotteringAlong · 29/12/2021 14:17

I recycled our marriage certificate by mistake…
