What have you accidentally thrown away?

I feel so upset. My dad made a little Christmas hamper for my toddlers, with things like the Organix snacks in. Some of it was opened so they could eat it, and DH mistook the paper bag it was in for recycling Sad

Totally not the end of the world as it was only a few snacks, but I feel so guilty because of the thought and care that had gone into choosing the bits. Also the fact that it wasn't mine but my children's. He is usually obsessive about sorting through the recycling too, I have no idea why he just dumped the whole bag!

So make me feel better Mumsnet. What have you thrown away by accident?

For my 18th birthday my mum bought me a pair of gorgeous earrings from a designer called Ayala Bar that I'd been lusting after for ages. I must've thrown away the earrings in the pile of papers from all the presents and I literally never got to wear them. I regularly still think about them!

SummerInSun · 29/12/2021 14:25

Me too re diamond earrings. Got changed at work for a black tie event and put on longer fancier earrings and put the diamond ones in a small bag in the bigger plastic bag with my work clothes. Took the plastic bag home, took clothes out, didn't remember to take the earrings out, bag got added to the big pile of spare plastic bags in the kitchen cupboard and when I thought of it a day later that bag was gone - think the cleaner had used it as a rubbish bag and binned it. Still really upset and this was months again and can't bring myself to get new ones even though I can afford it and wore them almost every day. 😞

Not to derail the thread, but where is a good place to get diamond earrings?

Musmerian · 29/12/2021 14:30

I bought myself a lovely Alex Monroe necklace on EBay as an end of term treat last summer as it had been such a manic term. It’s disappeared- I’ve looked absolutely everywhere and given up. I’m gutted as it cost £100 and it was a rare one

WouldIBeATwat · 29/12/2021 14:30

My favourite bra. 😭

Imicola · 29/12/2021 14:40

The power cable for my slow cooker, as i couldn't work out what it went with. Thankfully it was a standard one so we took one from an old kettle.

A gift voucher my dad got me for Christmas last year.
And when i was younger i decided to empty the rubbish from my pockets on the easy home from babysitting and also chucked my £20 earnings asking with it!

A small painting that I loved. It was packed with a much larger one and once that was removed the cardboard box was put out. Only later did I realise it had the much small painting in it.

@EishetChayil

A beautiful pure-silver ceremonial cup that was given to us as a wedding present from my husband's great uncle. It had been through the Holocaust, FFS. I accidentally threw it away in an overzealous spring clean Confused I have plead absolute ignorance to my husband, and he thinks it just went missing in a house move.
You poor soul. That's gut wrenching x

A cassette recording of my children chatting & singing aged 3 & 6. They're now in their 40's.

helloyoutoo8 · 29/12/2021 16:14

Lots! £100 in a birthday card, an iPod when sleeping with it in bed and it made its way to a bin at bottom of bed, vouchers from work as a leaving present.

Spikeyball · 29/12/2021 16:15

The iron. Dh was doing a tip trip so I gave him what I thought was the old broken one. Later that day I realised that I had given him the new one that we had only had a few days. So 2 new irons in a week.

RiderGirl · 29/12/2021 16:17

I threw out the tent poles for our brand new tent thinking they were for the old broken tent, which was beyond annoying when we were packing to go camping and I realised what I'd done (6 months earlier so way too late to save them!)

tellmetologoffIamaMNaddict · 29/12/2021 16:39

A ministerial agreement signed at a big ceremony and given to me to file afterwards. Had to get them to resign it.

JorisBonson · 29/12/2021 16:42

I once posted a £20 note with some letters.

CardRoomGreen · 29/12/2021 16:42

My passport. Clearing though "important" papers and I had two piles - bin and refile. Guess which pile I must have put it in. I didn't realise of course till we were about to go on holiday. Fortunately it was in the olden days and I got a new one turned around in a day.

mrsmop21 · 29/12/2021 16:44

Some cashmere socks

SilverSandStorm · 29/12/2021 16:45

I have form for throwing things away, items include my wedding ring (luckily found in recycling bin after an epic 3 day search), holiday tickets, half a gazebo (thought it was an old broken one when it was a new one) jump leads (ditto thought they were broken) and I'm still under suspicion from DH for his passport and birth certificate being thrown away disappearing. Now if anything is missing in the house it's usually accompanied by a chorus of "Silver/mum has probably thrown it away" Blush

Laiste · 29/12/2021 16:46

A beautiful Limoges Kingfisher.

Hmm

It was about 20 years ago. Every 4/5 years or so i have a google and see how much more it's gone up in value and curse myself all over again.

ProudThrilledHappy · 29/12/2021 16:51

Not me but I’ve just seen on Facebook a lady who accidentally donated her favourite childhood teddy bear to a British Red Cross store and is now desperately trying to track it down.

BusySittingDown · 29/12/2021 16:54

An iPhone Blush.

I was looking for it for ages and used the "Find my phone" app on my iPad and was confused as it appeared to be in the garden. Confused

It was in the wheely bin, luckily right at the top on top of the rubbish and not in it! I was lucky it wasn't bin day.

More recently I threw out a little bracket to fix onto the cupboard door of the integral dishwasher. We hadn't needed it for our old kitchen but had kept it in the drawer. We had a new kitchen put in but kept the dishwasher as it was nearly new. As I was cleaning out the old cupboards for the kitchen to be removed I came across the bracket thingy and thought it was something useless that we didn't need and threw it away.

When they reinstalled the dishwasher they asked for it 🙈. They needed it for the new cupboard - ended up having to order and pay for a new one. DH was not impressed with me Blush.

supercritter · 29/12/2021 17:01

DH gave away to charity my 4 fanciest dresses I had in a bag for dry cleaning.

StillSmallVoice · 29/12/2021 17:02

Passport. Also a brand new bottle of Chanel No 5, and an antique brooch I forgot to take off a jacket which was going to the charity shop.

TowandaForever · 29/12/2021 17:05

@FuzzyPenguin

My DS’s Amazon voucher he got this Christmas must have gone out with the recycling. I will have to replace it. Not as bad as my DH who through out our marriage certificate the day we got married, thankfully we found it but it’s now covered in teabag stains.
I'm sure I've read that Amazon will replace these?
ImInStealthMode · 29/12/2021 17:10

A small and entirely insignificant but lovely kitchen utensil I got in the sale the other day. I'd taken other purchases out of the shopping bag, dumped the packaging back in the bag and then put it all in the bin. Including small utensil Sad. By the time I realised the bin men had been.

It had been the last one in my small local branch of the shop but lo and behold a friend happened to mention by chance that they were going to a larger branch of the same shop today and HOORAY she's managed to replace it for me. So totally negated the 50% sale price as I've had to pay twice but delighted anyway.

ItsRainingTacos · 29/12/2021 17:11

Empty envelopes after opening up all the cards from our wedding. Except one of the envelopes contained all the gift vouchers and cheques that I collected out of the all the cards 😭😭😭. Didn't realise this until a week later when I was trying to find the envelope full of gift vouchers.

AndTime · 29/12/2021 17:16

Back when flight tickets were paper I managed to throw our return flights away whilst on holiday.
