What have you accidentally thrown away?

I feel so upset. My dad made a little Christmas hamper for my toddlers, with things like the Organix snacks in. Some of it was opened so they could eat it, and DH mistook the paper bag it was in for recycling Sad

Totally not the end of the world as it was only a few snacks, but I feel so guilty because of the thought and care that had gone into choosing the bits. Also the fact that it wasn't mine but my children's. He is usually obsessive about sorting through the recycling too, I have no idea why he just dumped the whole bag!

So make me feel better Mumsnet. What have you thrown away by accident?

@ProudThrilledHappy

Not me but I’ve just seen on Facebook a lady who accidentally donated her favourite childhood teddy bear to a British Red Cross store and is now desperately trying to track it down.
If they don't have ce labels they bin them. That's what we were told when we did the same.....

MIL was living in America and brought us a lovely Mexican wooden nativity set one Christmas. We put it on the mantelpiece each year. Then one year DH took a pile of empty boxes to the tip, and unbelievably took the nativity box as well, by mistake. We only realised the next Christmas! I was furious.....

My brand new engagement ring. Thankfully it was thrown in the compost and DH dug through it but I was devastated thinking it had gone in the food bin which had been collected. Now I don't take it off and wear 4 rings so I notice if they're missing!

SnoopyLights · 29/12/2021 17:29

A necklace my DH bought me, and my wedding ring.

They were in a dish on bedside table, and then they were gone. I think they were accidentally knocked into a bag of clothes we were clearing out for the charity shop.

I did ask if any jewellery had been found in the bag but they said no, and I think by the time I'd realised they were missing, searched the house, and then thought about the clothes bag and gone to ask, too much time had gone by anyway.

I'm still upset by it, the necklace was expensive and unusual, and my wedding ring could be replaced but it wouldn't be the real wedding ring.

Concert tickets for my eldest (my chemical romance) luckily was allowed replacement, but then concert was postponed and they are still in the envelope by the fruit bowl just waiting. Half my Christmas Dec's a couple of years ago, big lit up train and track, outdoor lights, base for the Christmas tree, the angel that was older than me, so much tinsel! A huge bag of new toys, was trying to do toy rotation with all the new Christmas toys, musical upsey daisy- light up iggle piggle, my first thomas, macca pacca and his og pog. Still kicking myself over that! And just last week, a stack of old newspapers in a bag I found in the loft, contained things like death announcements for family, 9/11 edition, George Harrisons death, important things but I just saw old news paper. My father may never forgive me!

A beautiful black leather cross body/clutch purse I had handmade in the leather souk in Marrakesh. It wasn't a complete accident, it had been in storage and gone mouldy and instead of cleaning it I threw it away. Pains me a lot!

I went travelling and my friends bought me an expensive st Christopher necklace to keep me safe and in the midst of moving from one hostel to another I threw a few bits away and my necklace had got mixed up with them and I never found it again🙁

Tickets to Disneyland Paris 😩

jenthehen · 29/12/2021 17:54

My husband bought me a luxurious white dressing gown for Valentine’s Day to replace one I’d had for over 10 years. In my excitement I bundled up my old one and took it straight out to the bin ……along with the belt for the new one. Didn’t realise until the bin had been taken. Now I can’t find a replacement belt anywhere.

CarmonEileen · 29/12/2021 17:59

My wedding dress! Well, not me, DH! I had popped it in a binbag ready for the dry cleaners, DH thought it was old pillows (didn't check) and took it to the tip! Confused

Wowcherarestalkingme · 29/12/2021 18:04

My purse. I bought my lunch and chucked my purse in the carrier with my food. I ate hurriedly at my desk, put the packets back in the bag and chucked the bag in the bin. Didn’t realise until a couple of days later.

I’ve also lost (presumed thrown away) a bag of Christmas toys for DSs. I ordered them in a sale in august and put them away for safe keeping. I’ve turned this house upside down at least three times and they aren’t here. They must have been scooped up and thrown with other bags of rubbish 😞😞

I also threw my purse and car keys away when I was about 18.

Shallwegoforawalk · 29/12/2021 18:23

@ItsRainingTacos

Empty envelopes after opening up all the cards from our wedding. Except one of the envelopes contained all the gift vouchers and cheques that I collected out of the all the cards 😭😭😭. Didn't realise this until a week later when I was trying to find the envelope full of gift vouchers.
Eek! Did nobody query when you didn't cash the cheques?
Franticbutterfly · 29/12/2021 18:29

Dh threw an airpod in the bin. My then toddler threw a new digital camera in the bin because it was "broken" (not charged). I didn't find out until after the bins had been collected. 😩

cptartapp · 29/12/2021 18:41

My great grandmothers diamond ring came off my finger and went down the linen chute at work many years ago.
Yep. Shouldn't have been wearing it. Never told my GM.

Techno56 · 29/12/2021 18:43

The replacement copy of my son's birth certificate that I got because I couldn't find the original (luckily realised before the recycling lorry came!!)

My friend had some Tiffany earrings she kept in a little box that her dd had made at school and her husband thought the box was junk and threw it in the fire with earrings inside 😱

rainbowraindrop · 29/12/2021 18:43

When we moved last year my husband threw away all our important paperwork, passports, birth certificates, marriage certificate, car logbooks. The lot.

I kept it in a big box file and when we were packing I said this is falling apart remind me to get a new one when we move. He was doing a tip run and took the box, threw it away with everything in. He said it was my fault as I'd said we needed a new one and he assumed I'd bought one.

ponkydonkey · 29/12/2021 18:45

I left a 4K diamond necklace in a dressing gown pocket at a spa and forgot all about it until a week later

Usuallyhappycamper · 29/12/2021 18:58

Last year we had some posh hand made Easter bunnies ready and waiting in a paper bag. Come Easter morning I went to get them and they had vanishes. I presume they were put out with the paper recycling. Any other year it would have been easy to get more, but not in the middle of first lockdown. Was really looking forward to having one each!

labazslovesliving · 29/12/2021 19:25

lost £100 birthday money am thinking that probably just got scooped up with empty envelopes and wrapping paper. only realised when I came to use it a few weeks later

beautifullymad · 29/12/2021 19:28

My iPods aaaaghhhhh. The location device didn't work either. Went through the bins on the driveway to check too. Sad

Littlegoth · 29/12/2021 19:39

@Sunshinedreaming2022Really outing but just before I went on honeymoon (it was delayed) I went on holiday with my Grandad. While I was away my h2b threw away our honeymoon money $700 in the same way. He refused to admit it (and tried blaming me for not ‘sorting the post’ before I went away, although he admitted he’d thrown the post I hadn’t sorted without checking it. I had to fork out for the spending money again even though I was a student, and it was a wedding present from my family (we didn’t get anything from his family) and he refused to admit he’d made a mistake. I’m still cross about it even though we’ve been divorced for 10 years.

polkadotpjs · 29/12/2021 20:26

Potato peeler. My best one. Not financially valuable but annoying nonetheless

allupsidedown · 29/12/2021 20:38

I accidentally shredded my degree certificate with junk mail. I only realised right at the end when I saw the crest going through.
We also had some very old and valuable Victorian family photographs on glass. They got left behind in a house move. I asked the new owners if they had come across them but they had thrown them away. Sad
