Anyone still eating leftover turkey? Or are we in food poisoning territory?

Our turkey (crown) has been wrapped in foil in the fridge since it was cooked and cooled on xmas day.

I’m thinking today is probably the last day it’s okay to eat? Or am I risking it?!

Was going to make into a pie filling with the leftover ham and freeze.

I would still eat it today but wouldn’t freeze it.

FindingMeno · 28/12/2021 08:39

I think today would be the last day.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 28/12/2021 08:40

@CiderWithLizzie why? I’m going to cook it into a pie filling and freeze that.

It'll be fine to do that.

MarvEll · 28/12/2021 08:41

Can't you eat turkey until New Year? Mine looks fine, we've got bloody loads left

CherryRedDMs · 28/12/2021 08:43

If you cook it again I don’t think it’s safe to freeze or reheat a third time.
For just eating the leftovers I’d go by smell and appearance rather than just time.

Xmasbaby11 · 28/12/2021 08:43

Same here. Making turkey soup and a pie mix for the freezer. It's fine!

AppleKatie · 28/12/2021 08:43

I would cook it again and eat it but not cook again and freeze- because in order to eat that pie you’d need to cook it a third time.

fluffi · 28/12/2021 08:45

I think 4-5 days is ok. I’ve got loads so will probably eat until Thurs!

I thought that was okay as long as it was frozen in between?

I have loads left. Some went in the freezer straight away, the rest is destined for meals today but I might not manage to finish it (four people missing from Christmas lunch owing to covid precautions and nobody visiting boxing day so too much left over).

I have got plenty of stock off it so probably turkey and barley broth for lunch and then either korma curry or minced in a Bolognese sauce for the rest of it.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 28/12/2021 08:48

Okay, what if I make my pie ‘sauce’ let it cool, then stir in the cooked meat and freeze. Then it’s only being recooked once, when I cook the pie?

It’ll be absolutely fine cooked as a pie filling or curry or whatever and then frozen.

oftenbaffled · 28/12/2021 08:48

No I wouldn’t

Yesterday evening I served up leftovers for the last time.
Binned the rest
No way would I freeze now. I only freeze as fresh as possible

ZenNudist · 28/12/2021 08:49

I've got loads left. Am going to freeze some and make sarnies as well for today / tomorrow. Its fine.

Policyschmolicy · 28/12/2021 08:50

Pretty sure we ate it for about a week when I was a child!

WeaverofWords · 28/12/2021 08:50

It’s still fine! I made a special rice thing last night & will freeze rest for curry at a different time. Might make soup from Bo’ness

Exhausteddog · 28/12/2021 08:51

We're away for a few days, back tomorrow. I thought Turkey will prob still be ok then.

WeaverofWords · 28/12/2021 08:52

Bones! My autocorrect 🤣
But actually now I’m wondering about meatballs. I have all the bits & pieces for a Gousto meatball dish that I never made… hmm think it might be that later…

drspouse · 28/12/2021 08:54

I would freeze it today but not recooked. Then defrost and make the pie in a single day.

Justcannotbearsed · 28/12/2021 08:55

Absolutely fine to make a pie and freeze. Was planning to do that this afternoon or tomorrow….we’ll still be eating Turkey till NYE…

NeedWineNow · 28/12/2021 10:37

I've got half a boneless turkey crown left. We're having cold today with bubble and squeak and I'll probably chip the rest and freeze for a curry or stir fry at a later date.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/12/2021 10:41

we always ate it all bloody week. up until Friday it would be this year. but Thursday and Friday meals would be something like soup so boiled.

SushiGo · 28/12/2021 10:50

It is absolutely fine to make the pie and freeze it now.

"You can freeze cooked turkey, other cooked meat and meals made from cooked and frozen meat. It will be safe to eat for a long time, but you may see a deteriation in quality after 3-6 months."

I use cooked poultry for up to a week.
