Anyone still eating leftover turkey? Or are we in food poisoning territory?

Our turkey (crown) has been wrapped in foil in the fridge since it was cooked and cooled on xmas day.

I’m thinking today is probably the last day it’s okay to eat? Or am I risking it?!

Was going to make into a pie filling with the leftover ham and freeze.

no because unfortunately my husband got his hands on the 8 person crown for the 3 of us and turned it into something that looked more like road kill and left nothing for any sandwiches or curry or whatever else it barely made it on the plate on christmas day it as that bad and hs no invented pulled turkey!

MIL and FIL used to eat their turkey for bloody ages - a whole week I think. Then she'd make the rest into a huge vat of soup which they'd store in the porch 'because it's as cold as the fridge' (bloody wasn't) and would live off that for several more days.

I'm less insane more conservative. The remainder of mine is getting made into soup today.

We made curry last night, with 2 portions leftover and already in the freezer. There was also 1 chunk of breast left which we froze whole yesterday and it will make a decent dinner for the 3 of us later in the year.

But if it's still left today, I would make it into something that reheats it thoroughly and then freeze it promptly once it has cooled down again.

LindaEllen · 28/12/2021 11:23

My parents used to serve us variations on turkey dishes right up until the traditional new year's day turkey curry. We never had any ill effects. I do think people are a bit too cautious these days.

See what it looks and smells like :).

liveforsummer · 28/12/2021 12:00

If uk unwanted to freeze and rehear a third time it would probably have been better to do that straight away rather than leaving it. Alternatively freeze the turkey until you are ready to make and eat a pie so it's only being heated a second time

liveforsummer · 28/12/2021 12:02

Omg sorry for that first sentence- if you wanted freeze to re heat a third time...

Recycledblonde · 28/12/2021 12:03

I’ve always eaten it until New Year. Never had any problems.

LittleBearPad · 28/12/2021 12:03

It will be fine!!

Mankyfruitbowl · 28/12/2021 12:04

It'll be fine if you cooled and refrigerated it. We've still got loads left which we're going to eat and freeze today and tomorrow. Always done the same with no ill effects. Love a bit of turkey pie at Easter!

There’s some serious food waste on this thread

WildRosie · 28/12/2021 12:14

You need a dog or cat (I won't say friendly fox) to volunteer their excess food disposal services. If you turn your back for thirty seconds, you may not even have to ask them.

Agree!

I'm planning to cut up the turkey today and transfer some into the freezer, as I ended up with a larger one than I'd planned. This is significantly earlier than I usually "deal with it". I've still got a second batch of gravy to make!

(admittedly, Boxing Day was, as it has been before though not the last couple of years, a predominantly vegetarian meal as my sister visited with her otherwise veggie family. We made sure she had a chance to have a slice of turkey and gammon while she was with us!)

I only saw one poster saying they'd binned theirs. Everyone else is still going strong I thought!
Isseywith3witchycats · 28/12/2021 15:45

my OH had the last bit of the christmas turkey on a sandwich today and he hasnt keeled over yet but would say today would be the last day i would throw any leftovers after today my cats have done very well this year on scraps of turkey and gammon

PickAChew · 28/12/2021 15:49

The tiny bit of ours that was left - just enough for a sandwich - got chucked, today, as it was rather dried out and smelled less good than yesterday. The ham I cooked is going strong, though.

TurquoiseDragon · 28/12/2021 15:51

I still have some left, it's fine. Some has been frozen for other meals, and the last bit not frozen is being used to make ramen tonight.

HemanOrSheRa · 28/12/2021 15:51

@SaveWaterDrinkGin

Okay, what if I make my pie ‘sauce’ let it cool, then stir in the cooked meat and freeze. Then it’s only being recooked once, when I cook the pie?
I'm going to do this just to be on the safe side. I'm going to make a pot of veg soup too. Cool it, stir in chopped up turkey/ham and freeze in portions.
TurquoiseDragon · 28/12/2021 15:53

Oh, I forgot to say that I have the huge stockpot boiling the carcass for stock. Some will be used for the ramen, and the rest frozen in small portions for other meals.

sparklemagicsnow · 28/12/2021 16:32

We are, but ours wasn't cooked until Boxing Day and it's the last of the leftovers in a curry tonight!

Soybean31 · 28/12/2021 16:40

I would eat it up until tomorrow (served cold in a sarnie). We're using ours up in a curry.

LBOCS2 · 28/12/2021 17:58

I'm making a pie tomorrow with leftover ham and turkey. We'll eat it then. I'd go to a week with cooked and appropriately stored poultry.

Tricked2003 · 28/12/2021 18:17

Freeze the cooked turkey in portions, then take it out reheat in a curry or pie as required.

DukkaTheHallsWithBoughsOfHolly · 28/12/2021 18:30

I’ve made a pie and have still got half left which we’ll eat tomorrow and the rest I’m going to make into a curry. I’m not throwing any of it away.

MissCruellaDeVil · 28/12/2021 19:05

I certainly wouldn't eat it!
