Programming the TV to record on VHS..

Ipods..

Renting a dvd from the shop..

Decorating a room and having one colour at the bottom with a paler version at the top separated with a pretty boarder..

What are yours?

LPG as the fuel of the future. Cutting edge petrol stations installed LPG pumps that were a total PITA to use, but we were assured would be everywhere in a few years.

IcedPurple · 23/12/2021 22:52

@Jumpingintochristmas

Calling to order a takeaway.
I still do that!
ClementineWardobe · 23/12/2021 22:55

I am 45, I still pay my window cleaner, ironing lady, and my car wash in cash, I keep it on the car for parking and the launderette too (parking with money is going though)
I paid a membership by cheque recently
I frequently change the dvd in the car
I iron at home to a CD (it's playing now, Allegri's Miserere)
Always have a landline
I send some Christmas cards
I feel like a right old dinosaur now!

@MsJuniper

One fat BIC biro with four different colours - I haven't seen one in years!

As a teacher our cupboards are full of these! Love the special editions with different selections of colours.

Used to be able to get massive fat ones with 6 colours. Black, blue, red, green, yellow, pink.
ClementineWardobe · 23/12/2021 22:56

... Come to think of it, I've used the pay at the pump petrol at Asda for ages and going into pay now feels oddly quaint.

TheFoldOx · 23/12/2021 22:58

CD multichanger in the boot of the car or under the passenger seat. Yes, you could play up to six whole albums!

Igneo · 23/12/2021 22:58

I think the one talking about joining the EU in the 1990’s might have meant signing the maastricht treaty.

Wheredidthequietgo · 23/12/2021 22:58

Blockbuster video rental

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Having to go and collect a takeaway
This is (unfortunately) still a thing in rural areas.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Having to go and collect a takeaway
How else would I get it home?

16 miles from the restaurant.

thenightsky · 23/12/2021 23:05

And that's why its called a 'takeaway', because YOU take it away!

HaveringWavering · 23/12/2021 23:05

@ginslinger

I can't imagine every become weary of contactless payments - I love it especially now that I have the cards in my phone wallet and just have to use a fingerprint to pay. It's brilliant.
I think OP meant “wary” not “weary” of contactless.
CrumpledCrumpet · 23/12/2021 23:07

We use our Alexa for most music streaming, radio etc at home. I was staying in a holiday cottage recently and having to physically turn off the radio with a switch felt like a huge imposition.

I never watch live TV anymore and almost exclusively watch paid for streaming services so the idea of watching TV ‘ad break’ seems really dated to me.

LadyRoughDiamond · 23/12/2021 23:08

I’m a teacher - I had to explain what a phone card was last term.

VenusClapTrap · 23/12/2021 23:08

Having to go to a filling station to put fuel in the car. I’ve had an electric one for two and a half years now, and when I went to a filling station recently (whilst a passenger in a friend’s car) it seemed really antiquated.

blisstwins · 23/12/2021 23:08

Digital cameras!
I saw an advertisement for wallow talkies with a 50ft range snd told a cousin I bought them as a Christmas gift. I am joking, but she has been like “really, do you think he will need them?”

Muchtoomuchtodo · 23/12/2021 23:09

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

4 in 1 box pens are very in demand in secondary schools.

Faxes. Does anyone have a fax machine anymore?

The NHS still loves a fax!
mumofEandE · 23/12/2021 23:09

@elQuintoConyo

Sending texts, actual SMS texts, not WhatsApps, and having to count the characters so you didn't accidentally write two messages and be charged twice.

Pagers - an 18yo student of mine recently asked me what one was, as he'd seen it in an "old" film.

Landline. Haven't had one for around 9 years.

MP3 player - I really miss mine.

Foil Christmas decorations you hung from the ceiling.

One fat BIC biro with four different colours - I haven't seen one in years!

You can still get the fat 4 colour biros ! Lots of students at my school have them. Also, you can get one that has 4 pastel colours !!
SequinnedShawl · 23/12/2021 23:09

I remember being taught how to use a phone box. I remember Channel 4 launching.

I loved video shops. Blockbuster you could choose your film and your snacks in the same shop

You can buy these in supermarkets!!

Me too :) I also play "those big black CDs" once in a while.
jollygreenpea · 23/12/2021 23:13

I still do some many of these;
Only use a landline
Phone for takeaway,collect and pay cash. Still use cash in other places
Have videos and a player, also dvds and cds
Have a freeview box
Have a cd player in the car
Sat at a desk top as I type
Still send and receive Christmas cards
Use a purse
Have a cheque book and have sent and receive them recently
We still have one of the old types of tv's, the ones that had an enormous bum, and it still works.

MrBoldwood · 23/12/2021 23:14

I remember when CD Changers in cars were the absolute nuts. They were rigged up in the boot.

TheFoldOx · 23/12/2021 23:16

@LadyRoughDiamond

I’m a teacher - I had to explain what a phone card was last term.
I remember the BT chargecard - basically a bit of plastic with a very long number on it, that you could use after dialing 144 in order to make a call charged to your BT account. I can still remember my number, and my parents still have the same BT account - I wonder if it'd still work?
Jumanji89 · 23/12/2021 23:17

Going to the shop to nuy a Pay as you go top up card.

Phone contracts being about how many minutes and texts you got. Now they are all unlimited and you pay for data.

Having to come off the internet if someone wanted to make a phone call.
