I got ds(19) a physical satnav for Christmas last year! He does use it all the time. He drives an older model car, so connects his phone via an aux cable to play Spotify, but uses the satnav for directions. He prefers it to an app for certain types of journeys.

GoodPrincessWenceslas · 26/12/2021 08:03

@pastypirate

Sat navs - as in the separate plastic screened unit made by garmin or Tom Tom. Totally redundant now.
Not in the least redundant. Lots of cars don't have built-in satnavs, and lots of people would prefer to have a separate satnav than use their phones.

Can I add not being able to buy things if you live in the sticks.

I was explaining to the dds I used to buy just seventeen in the 90's and feel shit there wasn't a branch of kookai in penzance!!! Ditto the make up they peddled. Things arnt inaccessible unless you live in a city anymore.

@Lovesplasticstraws

Internet Cafes had a very short life span. Went from amazing places where could check emails easily to redundant in what, less than 10 years.
They still seem to exist in US thriller novels though, for people in hiding or on the run to communicate with a friend without the ones chasing them intercepting the communication!

@CounsellorTroi

So true!

IcedPurple · 26/12/2021 13:26

Having to rely on pre-printed timetables for buses and trains, rather than being able to check in real time.

RampantIvy · 26/12/2021 13:38

We still use satnavs occasionally. The screen is bigger, and I can't use my phone on Bluetooth if I am using it as a satnav.

@elQuintoConyo

Sending texts, actual SMS texts, not WhatsApps, and having to count the characters so you didn't accidentally write two messages and be charged twice.

Pagers - an 18yo student of mine recently asked me what one was, as he'd seen it in an "old" film.

Landline. Haven't had one for around 9 years.

MP3 player - I really miss mine.

Foil Christmas decorations you hung from the ceiling.

One fat BIC biro with four different colours - I haven't seen one in years!

I bought 2 for my kids in £land ! Nostalgia😌

Almost every time I pick up my kindle I think about a girl in my computer studies class saying she couldn't imagine cuddling up in bed with a computer to read a book

Grin I remember having a book for English when I was about 10 with exercises in it like reading comprehensions. One was about a couple of kids in the future (probably about 2000 :) ) finding a paper book and being amazed that when they turned the pages back the words were still the same. They had books on screens. This would have been around 1982 so not that long ago, but I couldn't believe that we'd ever read books on screens.

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads

One that's quite Xmas specific - TV guides that you then highlight what you wanted to watch or record (we had one colour for watch and one for record - watch was the ones we all wanted to see record - the ones only one or 2 were interested in)

DD (10) was highlighting the Radio Times earlier this week, and is very excited about the original movie of West Side Story bring shown next week. Even though
1- she has as never been tied to watching something at the time it’s actually broadcast
2- we have WSS on dvd!

You've managed 2 in 1 there! Highlighting in the Radio Times is something I used to do when I stayed with the in-laws and we could only watch one thing at a time! (Fortunately we have very similar TV tastes!)

Also children who have never been tied to broadcast times. When we stay in holiday cottages my DD are baffled that they can only watch what's on, when it's on (always just basic Freeview or whatever it's called these days). Pausing to go to the loo or skipping the adverts or choosing something else are all completely off the table and it's like we're living in the dark ages to them 😆 Just imagine their response when I tell them we used to only have 4 channels to choose from 🤯

Staying in the same company for most of your life. Most people change jobs every few years nowadays.

The petrol station attendant filling up your tank. UK not USA. In the 80s

rifling · 01/01/2022 07:29

Petrol station attendants are still pretty common in Italy. Also, there is still one in my parents' village in the UK.

I used to love that living in Cyprus. Pull in, say what you need to the assistant, who would then wash your windows while you waited. Pay and off you go.

(The night pay machine though...)

Renting the TV from Radio Rentals or Rumbellows

willowstar · 03/01/2022 03:46

I have just bought a filofax for the first time! Struggling with staying organised with two jobs and outlook systems that wouldn't speak to each other, missing meetings occasionally if in the wrong calander...decided to give old fashioned paper a go. It is lovely. Just starting using it this month and I am loving the sections ...

willowstar · 03/01/2022 03:48

Also we live semi rurally and phone in and collect our takeaway orders...no other option. And we have a land line for when there are power cuts and mobile phones run out of charge.
