Everyone probably has one that does their head in when they hear it?

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day is one I find annoying when it comes on.

Fairytale of New York. I've never understood the love for it

It was on the hospital radio when my baby son made his appearanve into this word .
Baby son is now a strapping 5'11" 22yo young man
Took so blardy long to get his skates on I must've heard it four times on the loop.

My love for that song has never waned .
Shane MacGowan on 'who knows what' and me on gas'n'air . Made in heaven !

Fairytale of New York or mistletoe and wine

Songsungblue · 25/12/2021 14:24

What on earth is this irrational hatred for 'Fairytale of New York'? Is there some sort of competition happening?

Nothing irrational about, it's just awful.

Pralinelatte · 25/12/2021 15:23

In the bleak midwinter. Age 13 I was deeply depressed & remember listening to this carol in church, then weeping, and understanding that my emotional landscape was utterly bleak, cold and harsh; this was a horrible realisation. Still can't hear this decades later without returning to that dreadful place despite knowing objectively that this is a beautiful song.

MerryChristmasToYou · 25/12/2021 15:37

Do they know it's Christmas - the original was bad enough but the re-done version is worse

Most of them are dreadful

limitedperiodonly · 25/12/2021 15:45

I Believe In Father Christmas by Greg Lake makes me want to end it all. I'd take him with me but he died. It was near Christmas too.

It's not irrational, it's a horrid nasty song.
JakeyRolling · 25/12/2021 16:45

Anything that isn't Slade.

Though particular hatred is reserved for a sickly sweet number called Baby's First Christmas that was on a playlist that played from November 1 to January 12 at the hotel I worked at as a student.

Mumoblue · 25/12/2021 17:03

Is it terribly Scrooge-like if I say all of them? I worked too many Christmas periods in retail jobs so I heard them on a loop forever and I hate them all.

Mochudubh · 25/12/2021 20:06

As an antidote - here's Bob Rivers singing " Oh Little Town of Bethlehem to the tune of The House of the Rising Sun.

Thanks for that link - that's kind of ridiculous yet brilliant, both at the same time Grin

floridana · 26/12/2021 09:35

Fairytale of New York had to be the worst. The lyrics are gritty and it's just not a feel good song for me.

All I want for Christmas is you is massively overplayed and to me just sounds like she's shouting. Everything about that song sounds chaotic to me

That Gary Barlow Incredible can do one. That song has the most basic of tunes and he still can't sing it. Don't know why it's classed as a Christmas song, it's not even remotely Christmassy

Magnited · 26/12/2021 09:46

@00100001

Another vote for Fairytale of New York.

I'm convinced people only like it because if the swearing and the NYPD choir bit

If it didn't have it, you'd realise how very fucking depressing it is.

Yes, 100%

Dreadful song, if that is even the right word for it. Not a Christmas song at all.

ConcernedAuntie · 26/12/2021 09:50

When a child is born - Johnny Mathis.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/12/2021 09:54

So many, firstly Driving home for Christmas

RussianSpy101 · 26/12/2021 09:55

@PeskyRobins agreed. The Kylie one is dreadful.

Anything by Michael Bubble, Cliff Richard or whichever (usually female) pop star has decided to have a go this year. They’re always shit.
