Everyone probably has one that does their head in when they hear it?

I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day is one I find annoying when it comes on.

'Christmas Sweater' is a complete festering, unflushable turd of a lyrical monstrosity. I actually like the music - good, honest, cheesy Christmassy tune - but the lyrics are horrendous.

Aside from the fact that it's such a stupid topic to bother writing a song about in the first place, it's one long bullying session - going on at a woman who has made a perfectly valid personal clothing decision that she is 'wrong' not to step into line and trying to shame her into it.

If you watch the video, it basically makes it clear that Christmas sweaters are very much Micky's personal fetish (maybe Ann Summers should start selling them?) - then, at the end, he gets her to remove said sweater to presumably 'make the most' of his 'excitement' that her succumbing and wearing the object of his horniness has built up in him.

Truly nasty.

Since when was Brown Girl In The Ring a Christmas song ? Mary's Boy Child/Oh My Lord is.

suckingonyulelogs · 23/12/2021 21:21

I bloody love Do They Know it's Christmas, it was done with nothing but good intentions. Here's last years whinge about it, happens every sodding year on here

Agreed. There's far more deserving targets out there.
ouchmyfeet · 23/12/2021 21:27

Baby it's cold outside - particularly the Tom Jones and Cerys matthews version. Hard to articulate how much I hate it

ScreamingMeMe · 23/12/2021 21:33

All of them Grin

They are my least favourite thing about Christmas.

Wowcherarestalkingme · 23/12/2021 21:36

I absolutely love Christmas songs.

Apart from Boney M’s Mary’s Boy Child. That makes me want to punch something

00100001 · 23/12/2021 21:43

Another vote for Fairytale of New York.

I'm convinced people only like it because if the swearing and the NYPD choir bit

If it didn't have it, you'd realise how very fucking depressing it is.

AnneElliott · 23/12/2021 21:46

Driving home for Christmas- it is so boring!

Driving Home For Christmas -ever since it was on an advert

Dorismargaret · 23/12/2021 21:49

I hate Fairytale of New York Song by The Pogues. I hate their voices, the lyrics and the tune.

APJ1 · 23/12/2021 21:49

The John Lennon & Yoko Ono one, arrrrgh! S

WildRosie · 23/12/2021 21:50

Just think, before 1987, there was no Fairytale of New York ( it was painful typing that). Glory days. Before 1973, there were no Slade or Wizzard Christmas songs. In between times, there were no Wham or Shakin' Stevens Christmas songs. Just imagine. I'm not too bothered by most of them, as I've said, but the haters out there would be ecstatic.

PomegranateQueen · 23/12/2021 21:52

Lonely this Christmas. I remember my Nan saying it makes her feel shitty since my DGD passed away and the fact that it seems to be played in every shop means there is no escape from it. Depressing rubbish Sad

GreenWhiteViolet · 23/12/2021 21:52

Santa Baby. The sexualised/infantilised combination is just creepy. I'm not keen on many Christmas songs, but that's by far the worst.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 23/12/2021 21:55

The Coldplay one. 'It doesn't even feel like Christmas at all' - no, not with that miserable dirge playing it doesn't!

Gary Barlow and Sheridan Smith have brought one out that's truly awful, basically about a couple having a row at Christmas. They sang it on a chat show a few weeks ago and I was cringing at its awfulness and at them hamming it up, and it's got no better hearing it on the radio.

LadyEloise1 · 23/12/2021 21:57

Mariah Carey All I Want for Christmas
or
Wham Last Christmas

Cattenberg · 23/12/2021 22:00

Maybe I’m feeling particularly grumpy this year, but I can’t stand most of them.

I do like:

Walking in the Air
The Carol of the Bells
O Holy Night

And I quite like Fairytale of New York and that one by by The Darkness

The vast majority of the songs/versions listed on this thread are 70s and 80s and the most popular.

Mad how so little well known Christmas songs (in the form of popular music songs rather than carols etc) are from the last 25 years or so. Not withstanding all the tedious and forgettable cover versions.

When I hear Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade, I’m taken back to a memory of sitting in a pub just before Christmas with my eighty-something grandparents. That song came on and I winced a bit to hear “look to the future now, it’s only just begun”. I think my grandad died the following year.
ExquisitelyDecorated · 23/12/2021 22:06

Fairytale of New York is the worst by a huge margin for me, absolutely hate it.

TitoMojito · 23/12/2021 22:06

@DismantledKing

Fairytale of New York
Ditto

Christmas Wrapping has been particularly pissing me off this year.

User135644 · 23/12/2021 22:08

How is it plastic paddery? Both singers came from a long tradition of Celtic folk music. Unless you mean plastic in another sense.

I love Kirsty MacColl but there's something very faux-Irish about The Pogues.
