Tesco is so expensive now.

I had a home delivery tonight. It seemed like a lot when I placed the order but when it arrived there were 4 crates costing £132... mainly meat, cheese, fruit and snacks so expensive items but no alcohol, no dishwasher tablets, etc. I'm shopping at Lidl next time.

Everywhere is expensive now, I can’t stand Lidl’s personally or Aldi and don’t Get the hype, could never do a full shop there and they don’t deliver.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 18/12/2021 20:40

Hmm I'm lucky there is a new lidl store near me but I'm trying to stay out of the shops at the moment. I won't be ordering from tesco again.

With Tescos you have to sell them your personal details, by way of a club card, if you want to buy things at a reasonable price. If not everything there is really expensive! Yes definitely try Aldi or Lidl, you won't look back. x

I have a clubcard. Still pricey.

I’ve found all of the prices gone up, even Sainsbury’s it’s so expensive now, if you have one local then that sounds ok, mine is quite far and I’ve never found the products as good as people make out so not worth the travelling for me personally

MaybeAMoaner · 18/12/2021 20:43

Aldi & Lidl are cheap… but the food tastes crap and goes off quick.

I went to M&S today and was astonished at some of the prices. A crown of turkey draped in bacon was £80.

I like the quality and choice at Tesco.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 18/12/2021 20:44

We got 2 bags of shopping yesterday plus a few bottles of pop and some baby pouches. £114 after vouchers. Couldn't believe it!
There was no Xmas food, alcohol, large items etc.
Aldi and Lidl food is vile though so no way I'm shopping there.

bigbluebus · 18/12/2021 20:45

As a long time Lidl shopper I can tell you that prices have gone up there too - although nowhere near as expensive as Tesco. I agree with PP about making sure you have a Clubcard if you shop there though. I popped in to Tesco and bought 4 things and my bill reduced by £4 after I scanned my Clubcard.

ZenNudist · 18/12/2021 20:46

Aldi and Lidl are great for some things. I shop at waitrose and sainsburys too.

Waitrose is good value if you buy offers and essentials range.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 18/12/2021 20:47

Yes I remember shopping in lidl a couple of years ago and I got a full weekly shop for £40.

Our asda delivery was £174 today, absolutely fuck all there and a shit tom of substitutes. Sainsbury's and Morrison's are much better value nowadays I find.

Beecham · 18/12/2021 20:54

Everywhere is more expensive because of inflation, caused by the pandemic, rising energy costs, supply chain problems, labour shortages and Brexit.

Anywhere that isn't more expensive yet will be soon, or else is reducing quality/standards.

PercyPigginton · 18/12/2021 20:59

I’ve had so many duff items from Lidl that I gave up. Terrible sanitary towels, tasteless fruit.
DD hated the waffles. It’s too hit and miss for me, can’t get everything I want either so I’ll spend £100 but also have to pop into somewhere else for the stuff I couldn’t get.

Inextremis · 18/12/2021 21:04

Tesco Ireland is pretty good - prices have held steady for the past year, I rarely get substitutions, and the quality is fine. I have some issues with the way their website works, but other than that, no complaints, really.

BangingOn · 18/12/2021 21:05

There are a lot more price rises coming next year, unfortunately. So much additional cost in every part of the supply chain and manufacturer price increases inevitable.

Erictheavocado · 18/12/2021 21:06

I have had online deliveries from Tesco for years and yes, they have got more expensive, but so has everywhere else I think. Interestingly, my mum used to do all her shopping at Aldi, but during lockdown, I managed to get her signed up for the Tesco priority delivery slots. She told me recently that although things are more expensive, the quality, especially fruit and veg, is SO much better, that the cost works out similar once you are not having to dump manky fresh stuff after a few days.

earsup · 18/12/2021 21:08

I use aldi or lidl for soap powder and wash up liquid....eat mostly vegetables so go to grocers for those...but last few weeks have done a price comparison with a neighbour....and we found that sainsburys was cheaper than asda for about 95% of the items....sometimes just 2 pence but cheaper and the shop is nicer !

Floralnomad · 18/12/2021 21:10

I’m a Tesco and M&S shopper and I’ve not noticed the prices rising that much , lots of basics at Tesco (5% mince / chicken breasts etc ) are price matched with Aldi and I can scan and shop which makes things so much quicker . My main issue at the moment is that the Christmas stock , particularly in Marks , has meant that some of our regular items are unavailable in particular stores .

DeepDeepThought · 18/12/2021 21:10

Everywhere is more expensive, not just Tesco. It's not worth shopping there without a clubcard though, they make sure of that. Annoying, but better than Sainsbury's nectar where you have to add the offers on yourself which is just a piss-take - if you have to sell your data to a supermarket just to get half decent prices, they should at least do the blardy work for you.

Mamascoven · 18/12/2021 21:14

Its morrisons all the way for me. Not the cheapest and the prices have definitely gone up but the quality of products is brilliant and I can always get what I want. Tesco is far too expensive.

AngelinaFibres · 18/12/2021 21:30

What about Morrisons. Lots of choice , good value and huge packs of things like Tetley tea bags

liveforsummer · 18/12/2021 21:35

I find Tesco really cheap for a huge number of things, especially basics and popular branded goods. I'll pick the rest up elsewhere. I don't think there is any one supermarket that's cheaper now so have to mix and match wherever possible. Everywhere is definitely more expensive though worryingly- not just Tesco

TurnUpTurnip · 18/12/2021 21:35

I agree Morrison’s is good, Iceland’s is ok as well, tbh I would rather pay more and have better quality food than shop in Lidl or Aldi but that’s just me

frugalkitty · 18/12/2021 21:50

I shop in Tesco but I get my DS's staff discount, plus I only ever shop and scan so I can keep an eye on the total. With discount and club card prices it's ok but I wouldn't dare do a big shop in there without the scanner to hand! Prices definitely going up across the board though, noticeable even the weeks I do a Lidl shop (plus top up for the things I can't get in there).

AuntyBumBum · 18/12/2021 21:58

Tesco is crazy now, incredibly expensive, especially the non-loyalty-card prices. I've switched to Sainsbury.

Also Tesco hardly ever has any bloody tills open!
