Tesco is so expensive now.

I had a home delivery tonight. It seemed like a lot when I placed the order but when it arrived there were 4 crates costing £132... mainly meat, cheese, fruit and snacks so expensive items but no alcohol, no dishwasher tablets, etc. I'm shopping at Lidl next time.

Sounds like you should shop at Lidl then. I've found the choice not good there and their own brand food not nice so I don't shop at Lidl.

I'm happy with Sainsbury or Tesco. Horses for courses or whatever

MissCruellaDeVil · 18/12/2021 22:00

@TurnUpTurnip

I’ve found all of the prices gone up, even Sainsbury’s it’s so expensive now, if you have one local then that sounds ok, mine is quite far and I’ve never found the products as good as people make out so not worth the travelling for me personally
Sainsbury's has always been more expensive that the competitors eg Morrisons, Tesco etc.
tectonicplates · 18/12/2021 22:02

I agree that prices have gone up everywhere, but they have increased arty Tesco in particular because of the club card thing. I hate this two-tier pricing system and I'd rather just stop going there as I have a choice of several supermarkets.

That’s true with Sainsbury’s, I only tend to go in there as I prefer the lay out of the store, my local Tesco’s store is a pain, but it’s very expensive end up spending a fortune! If I get a delivery it’s always Tesco’s

Hairyfriend · 18/12/2021 23:09

The only bargain I've found this week is 19p veg which many stores are doing (aldi, tesco and lidl, but likely more). I vaguely recall they did that last year, then in the days before Christmas, they went down the 9p. Anyone recall this or just me?

I think inflation is going to get worse from January - we haven't imposed all the import controls we should have done with Brexit yet and more are supposed to come in from January.

It does seem odd - like an anti-loyalty scheme! I've always gone to Tesco without giving it much thought, because it's slightly nearer, but now that I've been driven into the arms of Sainsb's by Tesco's bizarre pricing policy I find that I quite like it.
justasking111 · 18/12/2021 23:55

The Tesco chairman said a couple of months ago prices would rise up to 15% for various reasons beyond their control. Would be the same for other companies.

Gilead · 19/12/2021 00:58

I use Aldi click and collect and have been for a good while. I have never had a substitution nor an out of stock item. No dodgy dates either. Wouldn’t go anywhere else now.

FrenchBoule · 19/12/2021 09:13

It’s not just Tesco, prices are going up in all the shops.

We are a very boring family that eat the same stuff so I know what the prices of certain items was/is.

Stocked up Lurpak at Tesco as it was the cheapest and Cathedral at Asda for the same reason.

Aldi and Lidl- some items are good and some are not. Cinnamon cereals from Aldi - disgusting greasy stuff. Their milk always goes off before the date and twice had to bin the chicken as it stank after opening the tray.

Downgraded as many brands as we could - still sticking to Lurpak and Cathedral as I haven’t found any substitute equal in taste and price.

megletthesecond · 19/12/2021 09:18

Aldi and Lidl aren't cheap anymore. And they're useless if you have allergies in the family or only need one onion or orange etc.
I tolerate them for crisps, biscuits and tissues. But for actual food I still use sainsburys.

icedcoffees · 19/12/2021 09:25

Prices are going up everywhere but saying that, you've bought expensive items too - meat, cheese and snack foods have never been especially cheap anyway.

Nowmum43 · 19/12/2021 09:36

I've done a weekly online shop with Tesco's for over 10years, I noticed in the past couple of weeks how some of my weekly items had shot up in price. Somethings with an extra 50p on them. Considering changing shops in the new year as the price rise's are ridiculous!

AnnaMagnani · 19/12/2021 09:37

I do 90% of my shop in Lidl. It is absolutely fine if you are buying fruit/veg/meat etc and cook from scratch. And the Christmas biscuit selection is fantastic.

Never noticed that things go off quicker than if you buy them elsewhere. I also like the lack of choice - I shop from a list and don't need 6 different brands of chopped tomatoes. It just makes you spend more money.

I then go round the corner to Waitrose or Tesco to buy the missing spices or random veg items I couldn't get in Lidl.

AliceWo · 19/12/2021 12:42

I've stopped going to Tescos because of their Clubcard policy. I'm not being forced to get a card because of their gouging non-clubcard prices.

ArblemarzipanTFruitcake · 19/12/2021 12:43

Inflation Sad

Me too, though no meat as vegetarian. I find it bizarre that some posters describe the food there as vile Confused I’m really bloody fussy and have never had an issue with Lidl food. I don’t buy ready meals so can’t comment on their quality.
I tend to buy fruit/veg/cheese/Greek yoghurt/bread/ tinned legumes etc. plus obviously the Christmas stuff! Nothing I’ve purchased has been vile, although the Camembert I’ll concede wasn’t great.

Welcome to Brexit Britain

SilverHairedCat · 19/12/2021 12:58

We went to Asda yesterday to do the big Xmas shop. I nixxed it in the first aisle - back to Lidl it is. I'm appalled at the prices, but I've only shopped in Lidl for years (nearest supermarket). I don't agree about it being short dated though, we've never had a problem and if you're buying fresh meat, fruit, veg etc then it tastes the same unless you prefer can afford organic etc.

Lidl are also excellent for international foods, like cheeses, cold meats, breads etc.

I buy a few things in Waitrose that I can't get in Lidl - sushi rice, spices etc - and even they were cheaper than Asda for the same things!

Isseywith3witchycats · 19/12/2021 13:00

i shop in aldi maybe im lucky ours has a really good selection of everything and yes ive bought things i havent liked before now but i just dont buy them again and this week is not really a barometer of what people would normally spend on food as people are buying christmas stuff (ie chocolates drinks etc ) that they normally would not buy the rest of the year this week and when i go aldis on wednesday i will have probably spent £250 wheras normally that would be £150 for the month between aldi and iceland but yes even aldis prices have gone up slightly to last year

Mittenmob · 19/12/2021 13:03

We have multiple allergies and Tesco and ocado are the only place we can get everything in one shop. I refuse to spend all weekend driving between different shops to get one weekly shop so Aldi and Lidl are out for me.

35andThriving · 20/12/2021 22:02

I agree. A lot of prices have gone up. Still prefer Tesco to the other supermarkerts though.

Yesthatscorrect · 21/12/2021 05:26

I've had Tesco deliveries for about 7 years now. I base our meals for the week on whatever is on clubcard prices and don't normally spend more than 80 quid a week for a family of four. I find shopping online so much better to control the budget. If they give you a substitute it will be a better item too.

Every now and then I'll try Aldi then remember that everything is either shit quality or it randomly goes off. I don't have time to queue in aldi to let them know yet another product is off. If there are any issues with my tesco order I ring them and they refund, no quibble.

Worth the extra fiver a week.

Yesthatscorrect · 21/12/2021 05:27

I have just been to aldi yesterday for our Christmas alcohol though. I love their wine.

Stuffin · 21/12/2021 05:38

I find online shopping helps keeps the bill down. I can search around for cheaper brands and club card deals and am slowly reducing my bill by shopping a bit smarter.
