Are there any decent alcohol-free beers and wines?

I suddenly got sick yesterday, I’m on medication and can have absolutely no alcohol while I’m on it, which will probably be at least a week or two.

So my plans to have some nice wine, fizz and beer for Christmas are out of the window. Can anyone recommend any non-alcoholic ones that actually taste good? I’m interested in white wine, sparkling wine, beers and mocktails.

The ones I tried years ago were completely revolting, so I’m hoping that some better offerings are available these days.

My sil swears by becks alcohol free lager. I don’t drink so no idea if it’s any good

FictionalCharacter · 17/12/2021 03:24

I’ll give that a try @Alpenguin, thanks. I’m going to be doing a lot of testing Grin

I love ALL the alcohol free beers especially with lemonade as a shandy

I've not drunk for 18 years but always enjoy these at Christmas

Not yet found a decent alcohol free wine it's all shit

My favourite is Claushaler but you can only get it from Ocado. Otherwise Moretti is the best from Sains/Tesco.

beer I like nanny state and infinity ipa and brooklyn something or other. Most alcohol free wines are terrible but some of the sparkling ones are ok. Try nosecco or the M&S one. There are tons of spirit substitutes now but crodino is the best, the red martini one is cheaper than most and not bad. None of them will fool you that you are drinking alcohol but they are better than soft drinks.
Kombuchas also work well as a more grown up, special alternative.

I like venture (nether gate) and ghost ship (Adnams), but they are both 0.5% I think.
Wine is harder as it all tastes very sweet- I stick to nonsecco, a fizzy one.
I do like the non-alcoholic red martini and there is an excellent pink gin. Gordon’s alcohol free gins and premixes are nice.
We have an alcohol free aperol ready to try over Christmas, which we hope will be good. My mum had to stop drinking alcohol a few years ago and in the last year or so the options have improved a lot.

Three Spirit are good, very unusual tastes but they give you "feelings" similar to having alcohol. Expensive though!

DH has recently cut back massively so we are something of the experts on alcohol free stuff Wink

In truth we've found the best results from hanging around the (exceedingly well stocked) alcohol free aisle in Sainsburys - turns out other non drinkers cannot wait to impart their knowledge to you Wink

Fruit ciders are mostly completely indistinguishable, and Thatchers do a regular cider which is excellent.

The more modern IPA's seem to fare better than the traditional "brown beer" types, possibly because they lend themselves to being served cold. Having said that, Guinness have just released an alcohol free version which DH tells me is excellent, and which we are struggling to source anywhere as its popularity is apparently unprecedented.

I'm very fond of a Heineken 0.0 which tastes exactly like the lager you get in stubby bottles in France and reminds me immediately of holidays and sunshine.

Not much luck with wines, though a few are passable.

I second nanny state. It has a really good flavour and is better than punk af which is a bit flat and tasteless for me

Jota67 · 17/12/2021 06:04

McGuigan Zero is the best wine we have found as most of them are horrid.. it is the most drinkable by far

pigcon1 · 17/12/2021 06:04

Free star is good
We also like gingerella ginger beer as a substitute (not too sweet)
If just cutting back - red wine at 10.5 percent alcohol

pigcon1 · 17/12/2021 06:06

Sorry - only the ginger beer will work - forgive me

MadameFantabulosa · 17/12/2021 06:08

If you have an Eastern European shop near you that sells Romanian stuff, Ursus alcohol free is the best beer I’ve had. They also do “coolers” which are like a shandy.

LizzieMacQueen · 17/12/2021 06:10

How about something not necessarily marketed as alcohol free? Fever tree ginger beer is incredibly good. Spicy and fresh.

CheshireSplat · 17/12/2021 06:10

Big Drop Brewing Company make a few and Pine Trail Pale Ale is the best alcohol free beer I have ever drunk.

They only make alcohol free beer so their brewing technique has been honed!

EnidFrighten · 17/12/2021 06:11

Nanny state. If you like wheat beer, erdinger alkoholfrei is good too.

When pregnant I got into soda water or tonic with a free drops of angostura bitters and a side of lemon or lime - there's a tiny bit of alcohol in the bitters so it's not completely non alc. Tastes refreshing, a bit like g&t.

EnidFrighten · 17/12/2021 06:12

Few drops, slice of!

Macmickmoo · 17/12/2021 06:17

Lucky Saint is my favourite

TartanCurtains · 17/12/2021 06:20

FreeDamm beer, available in Morrisons is good. It was rated highly in a review I came across, and I agree!

sweetheartyparty · 17/12/2021 06:21

The Lidl 0% lager is really good. Tastes very similar to the real thing

RampantIvy · 17/12/2021 06:23

Wine, no.

Beer:
Alcohol free Guinness
Brewdod Punk IPA
Erdinger
Shipyard Low Tide

I haven't had an alcohol free cider I didn't like.

tootiredtobother · 17/12/2021 06:24

i have just ordered from Majestic , a case of Noughty sparkling white wine, something and Cox are the makers it was in a magazine i have read recently, dont know if its any good yet, but im trying to cut down the alcohol

MiloAndEddie · 17/12/2021 06:24

The problem with usually drinking normal lager is that the no alcohol ones just aren’t as good! Grin however the Heineken 0.0 is a very good imitation.
The zero gins are pretty good too, taste quite similar

LactoseTheIntolerant · 17/12/2021 06:29

I have found a good af wine! You can't get it from supermarkets I get my af drinks from drydrinker.com. The wine is called sinzero and is definitely the best af wine I've had (and I've tried a few!) they do a merlot, chardonnay and sparkling.
