Are there any decent alcohol-free beers and wines?

I suddenly got sick yesterday, I’m on medication and can have absolutely no alcohol while I’m on it, which will probably be at least a week or two.

So my plans to have some nice wine, fizz and beer for Christmas are out of the window. Can anyone recommend any non-alcoholic ones that actually taste good? I’m interested in white wine, sparkling wine, beers and mocktails.

The ones I tried years ago were completely revolting, so I’m hoping that some better offerings are available these days.

Eins Zwei Zero from Waitrose is the only drinkable non-alcohol wine I've found. It's sweet like other non-alcohol wines but more like a Riesling sweetness. For beer I like Nanny State and Erdinger Alcoholfrei.

Twilightstarbright · 17/12/2021 06:47

I like the Gordon’s g&t in glass bottles, recommended by a friend who drank them when pregnant. Waitrose had them.

Any of the alcohol free larger is fine for me but as others have said Becks blue is the one that tastes most authentic. The others have a bit of a burnt sugar aftertaste.
The 'spirits' are vile, very overpriced sugary crap that tastes nothing like gin etc. same with the wine and fake Prosecco.
I've given up trying to find anything decent and if in a pub just have lime and soda. It's stops the pitying looks when you ask for an alcohol free beer too.

Like many others, there are some good beers but wine just doesn't seem to be cracked yet.
Try Belle and Co sparkling 0%, I prefer the rose over the white and it's usually around £3/bottle. Or kombucha. There are many different ones available, some are a bit more like pop, but I like Dry dragon for a treat. Its not cheap though.

TeaMeBasil · 17/12/2021 07:04

A cold Becks blue is very nice, the one most like a good lager in my opinion

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 17/12/2021 07:12

M&S have a decent selection of non alcoholic fizz, mocktails and spirits. Seedlip is a good gin replacement. AF beers have improved massively. Becks blue I find too sweet but Punk AF and Nanny State by Brewdog are good and taste of actual beer. Ghost Ship by Adnams also good. Henekien 0.0 is ok. Koppaberg AF versions of their fruit ciders are very drinkable.

Impatientwino · 17/12/2021 07:16

Seedlip is nice

Noughty sparkling probably the best I've had and was enough to get me through dry January when I really fancied a cold glass of fizz - I got it on Amazon.

To be honest I found it was more about the glass for me. I've been drinking fever tree tonic or Mexican lime soda in a wine glass recently and that feels like a grown up drink just as much.

randomsabreuse · 17/12/2021 07:19

Leffe and Peroni Libero are my favourites, Becks Blue and the Lidl are cheaper but ok.

Not found a nice wine other than fizz.

Fevertree tonics and sodas are good.

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 17/12/2021 07:22

Loads of great suggestions.

Aldis mocktails are pretty good.... if you can get them. Mojito one is my fave, but you could do your own with bitter lemon/sparkling flavoured water, mint, lime juice and slices over ice. In a proper cocktail glass of course!

Koppaberg a/free pear cider is lovely, but sweet... just like pear drops.

Lots of the flavoured posh tonics are nice, as is fentimans rose lemonade.

PlayItCool · 17/12/2021 07:22

I also second Lucky Saint and Freedamm - I prefer them to regular lager now.

The AF Guinness is excellent but always seems to be sold out!

I also like a nice tonic or ginger ale with some angostura bitters, or the AF martini is nice if you like Campari type flavours

succession · 17/12/2021 07:25

@EnidFrighten

Nanny state. If you like wheat beer, erdinger alkoholfrei is good too.

When pregnant I got into soda water or tonic with a free drops of angostura bitters and a side of lemon or lime - there's a tiny bit of alcohol in the bitters so it's not completely non alc. Tastes refreshing, a bit like g&t.

Yes! Erdinger is the best for me
GoldilocksZone · 17/12/2021 07:27

The best school free lager is Moretti Zero imo

I also use brewdog's punk af.

The alcohol free red wines are more bearable than the whites but still a bit eurgh. Best one I've had so far is McGuigan Zero. But beer is a better bet for AF

GoldilocksZone · 17/12/2021 07:27

School free?! Alcohol free, sorry!

Porridgeislife · 17/12/2021 07:28

Becks Blue and Erdinger alcohol-free wheat beer are the two best beers.

For wine, Oddbird Blanc de Blanc sparkling is really good. I order it from Amazon. I haven’t found a drinkable still wine yet.

At home, instead of G&T, I put club sofa, lime cordial and a few drops of Agnostura bitters into a big round gin glass. The bitters aren’t alcohol free but you are only using a few drops and you’d take in more alcohol eating a ripe banana.

It’s called lemon lime and bitters and is a popular drink (if retro) in Australia - lemonade is sometimes used instead of club soda.

Kotatsu · 17/12/2021 07:30

Came here to say the lidl stuff is surprisingly good. And the Aldi one - although I find it a bit too gassy.

The alcohol free guinness is like real guinness - the first tin you're not sure you're liking it, but by the second you're really into it.

The only decent alcohol free wine I've had is one I accidentally picked up at the garage called Nosecco, and it was very drinkable (although much more obviously alcohol free than the beers).

I keep some of the beers in the house for when I get to that point where I don't want any more tea, or anything sweet, but still fancy something to drink that's not water.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 17/12/2021 07:38

I drink Becks Blue, Dh drinks either Heineken 0.0 or Erdinger.

Ulysses · 17/12/2021 07:39

Erdinger is may favourite alcohol free beer. Fizzy wine is more patchy, Nosecco is a bit sweet for me and I've tried others but none of them hit the spot. If I fancy something sparkling, Fever Tree ginger beer with a dash of lime is a drink I can savour.

sunflowerroses · 17/12/2021 07:45

White eisberg is ok, wasnt keep on their other wines though.

Ducksareruiningmypatio · 17/12/2021 07:46

As a lifelong Guinness drinker, I can say without hesitation that the zero alcohol Guinness is OUTSTANDING!
It's not 100% perfect it's about 99 Grin
Plus it's only about 80 calories a can.
Utterly incredible.

(I was so suspicious of it, It was such a lovely surprise that it was so good)

justadaydreamer · 17/12/2021 07:49

M&S fizzero

Riverlee · 17/12/2021 07:52

I like the Elderflower drinks as an alternative to wine. It doesn’t pretend to be alcohol, but is light and refreshing. Also, some of the upmarket squashes are nic - Robinson Lime and mint.

BeastOfBODMAS · 17/12/2021 07:53

The Guinness is really good, my local Morrisons stock it consistently.

I’ve always drank black velvets on New Years (Guinness and champagne), as a way of taming the fizzy plonk that people bring to parties.
I’d imagine that it might counteract the sweetness of nosecco etc quite well too!

ChristmasRobins · 17/12/2021 07:54

Ghost Ship is lovely- it has an alcoholic and a v low alcohol (0.5%) version so make sure you get the right one.

Seedlip Spice with tonic, ice and a slice of orange.

Rainartist · 17/12/2021 08:03

M&S fizeroo is nice as a sparkling alternative. Their no alcohol white was ok but didn't taste of wine.
