Side dishes to go with gammon

Juturna · 14/12/2021 20:17

I’m cooking gammon (for the first time!) at the weekend for a family dinner, but I can’t decide on the best side dishes to serve with it.

I’m looking for inspiration, please Smile

TIA

Cauliflower cheese is yum

NoSquirrels · 14/12/2021 20:20

Personally I’d like creamy mash (maybe with whole grain mustard stirred through?) or something like potato salad as a cold contrast.

Green beans, broccoli - something slightly crunchy.

Buttery mash, Cumberland sauce, red cabbage, green beans. That would be my choice!

Cauliflower cheese and red cabbage

I like doing a lovely creamy cheese sauce with leeks in with gammon

Yuledo · 14/12/2021 20:22

In our house

Pineapple
Grilled tomato, peas

Or

Cauliflower cheese

Mash and sweetcorn. Something magical about the saltiness of the gammon and the sweetness of the corn. Yum.

DartmoorChef · 14/12/2021 20:24

Cauliflower cheese, buttered savoy cabbage and new potatoes

christmaspombear · 14/12/2021 20:24

Parsley sauce, new potatoes, peas and buttered leeks

viques · 14/12/2021 20:24

I would go for spiced red cabbage and good mash.

Hoppinggreen · 14/12/2021 20:26

Definitely red cabbage and then something a bit creamy and/or cheesy and peas

Juturna · 14/12/2021 20:26

Some fab ideas there, already, many thanks!

Cauliflower cheese for definite and spicy red cabbage, I think Smile

@wincarwoo

Cauliflower cheese is yum
Yes this. I make mine using onion powder and a little mustard with lots of cheese sauce. The sauce works well with gammon.
beautifullymad · 14/12/2021 20:40

I boil the gammon for half and roast for the last half. Whist it's roasting I put tinned butter beans in the cooking liquid and simmer until tender. This makes a lovely side for gammon.

Singalongsingsong · 14/12/2021 20:41

Red cabbage with apples and chestnuts, cauliflower cheese, baked potatoes

Watto1 · 14/12/2021 20:42

Is nobody going to say pineapple, fried egg and chips?!?

AuntyMabelandPippin · 14/12/2021 21:15

Savoy cabbage fried with garlic and soy sauce. Divine.

MonkeyPuddle · 14/12/2021 21:17

We usually have stewed red cabbage, carrot and sweed mash, toasted baby potatoes and then I serve it up in a giant Yorkshire pudding.
Any excuse for a Yorkshire pudding in our house mind.

mrsbyers · 14/12/2021 21:37

Macho peas

gaggiagirl · 14/12/2021 21:39

@Watto1 yes! With chips, egg and beans or chips, pineapple and peas if you're feeling exotic.

sunlovingcriminal · 14/12/2021 21:42
